Title: Luton Christmas Cracker: Day 1 - Interactive
Post by: snoopy1239 on December 07, 2007, 10:47:20 PM
Greetings one and all and welcome to the 2007 Luton Christmas Cracker, possibly the most hotly anticipated of all the Christmas Crackers in the entire world... and the universe. In fact, myself and Junglecat (mistakenly spelled Junglcat on his blonde poker hoodie in what he himself referred to as "how Barry (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=42) Neville (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=42) would pronounce it") have decided to create our own festival to combat the seemingly endless string of events that are indeed unimaginatively called 'Crackers'. Therefore, we have come up with the inaugural 'Junglcat and Snoopy Christmas Corker', to be staged every year in our imaginative worlds (we are too lazy to actually form a real event).

The structure of our events have already been discussed at length. Due to the limited amount of chips at our disposal, I believe the maximum number of players is limited at 5 players per tournament, but fear not, as we are planning an eclectic series of events, including a controversial H.O.R.S.E event, if only to attract the big names from across the pond. As for the blind structure, we will be offering every single level known to man, including the rarely seen 37.5/75 level.

This weekend at the G Casino may not be a showcase of Corkerness, but we fully expect the srtucture to be familiarly cracking nonetheless. With lower numbers expected (the GUKPT and extended festival circuit surely playing a part) and two days to play with, there's no reason why the players won't be given ample time to allow skill to prevail over luck.

We're not sure which players will be making the trip, but it should be a hoot, so make sure you join Dana and I for the best updates in town, or perhaps the only ones if the recent Midland Masters is anything to go by. Either way, feel free to fire away your requests or good luck messages and we''ll do our very best to cater to your every need, including norkage if available!

Play commences at 6pm.

Two questions?

(1) How many players will start this event?

(2) With the GBPT and GUKPT heading for a second season, are there too many festivals on the current circuit? Should they consider removing events such as the Poker 6, Midlands Medley, etc?

1. 100

2. Hope full the better comps with the right structures will be supported and the lesser ones fade.

I hope not, £100 comps with a half decent structure are whats needed ... i would love to get a truthful and real answer to the question of how many players pay their own entry into GUKPT events (by paying own entry i mean stumping up the grand each time and not qualifying online, being backed or being sponsored)

has the "luton" christmas cracker been moved to the vic as stated on the front page? or is snoops actually doing the update from the vic using very strong binoculars?

How come they are so poorly attended then?

I think £100 is too small for a festival event, these are available every week.

Let me get this straight. The Luton Christmas Cracker is being played AT THE VIC?

67 - and thats being generous.

Marketing and online satelites would greatly improve numbers for "other" festival events

Well I'm playing, so that makes 68.

1. 66

2. It needs "corporate" commitment to marketing and promotion of such festivals, this would include satellites, rather than abandoning them and expecting non-promoted events to fend for themselves. In a very crowded schedule they are going to suffer. They should represent the step from regular £250 type events to £500 plus for these festivals and then up to the GUKPT. £100 is way too small, one could play 3 of these a week within 40 miles of London if you wanted already.

1. 44

2. I think the competition and amount of events countrywide can only be good for POKER, but this is an inter group thing which makes no sense as they are sucking the life out off their established festivals with poor planning. Luton was nothing like l remember this week and it will take a bit of good PR work to get me back for another festival.

 1)...62

 2)  these sort of festivals, with a main event buy in of around £500 should be a stepping stone to GUKPT......PROMOTED with on line and live satellites with guarantees and maybe some added value.

Maybe they could take some ideas from the Virgin festival in Brum.......entertainment,bounties on players, bubble prize, first out prize, sit and go comps, half price drinks at the bar etc........

Evening all! We are fresh from a pointless half hour driving around Luton trying to find our hotel before giving up and heading straight for the casino... Oops... Anyway, we are happily ensconced now in the bowels of the Luton G Casino. Camera's a-charging, we're working out how to use the tournament clock, and play is due to start at 6pm. See you then...

Title: Re: Luton Christmas Cracker: Day 1 - Interactive

Greetings all, we have indeed arrived, although after a hellacious journey in which our Internet route planner let us down to the point of actually fabricating roads and locations. In fact, it comes to something when a phone conversation with TightEnd is more reliable than the endless intelligence capacities of the world wide web. Sigh.

So, after heading up numerous dead ends and one way systems (since when was Luton the new London?!), we finally stumbled upon the dual carriage that the Casino lies on. A relieved trundle into the car park and we were finally here, braced and raring to go.

I've never been to this Casino before, and was pleasantly surprised to (1) its size and (2) its general brand spanking newness, both of which are top class. In many ways, it's reminiscent of the Broadway Casino in Birmingham in terms of spaciousness and decor. However, and although I have yet to fully justify this observation, there doesn't seem to be the same buzz about the place that was once enjoyed on Dunstable Road. Everyone seems very morbid and the general atmosphere is somewhat lack-lustre. My hope tonight is that the numbers for tonights £750 Main Event suddenly implode and we are treated to a hustle and bustle of poker festivity. The chances are though, that we'll only see around 60 or 70 runners, because with just twenty minutes left before the official kick-off time, there were only a few familiar faces mulling around the bar.

Numbers might be low and the atmosphere a worry, but we have one saving grace in the returning Ali Malu, who could spark any tournament, and cardroom for that matter, into life with his eye-brow raising approach to Texas Hold'Em. Fingers crossed that he is in full Malluing mode so we have plenty of action to report. He doesn't often let us down on that front.

Yes, yes, yes, they're off, triggering me to push the big red button that launches the sparkling clock. The board, however, seems to have gone bananas, stating that there were 44 starters with 40 left! One of them is the correct answer, not sure which.

Even at these very early of stages, this has been a very surreal experience. As Jeff Buffenbarger and Jim McShane were entering the building, the legendary Red-Dog was exiting, his departing words being "there's just no value in it for me, I might head up to Dusk Till Dawn or play online," before joking, "I hope they don't scrap these little events, the Midlands Medley is one of the few I've finalled in!"

We haven't received a player list as of yet, but when we do, Dana will be tickling those keyboard keys like a maniacal secretary trying to get those names up for you. From my own eyes, however, I did manage to spot Rumit Somaiya, Stephen Holden, Harpit Gurnam, Jim Reid, Ali Mallu, David Young and others.

Yes indeedy, this is a most boutique event today with only 40-ish runners and absolutely none of the party atmosphere that I was almost regretting not dressing up for on the way here.

Proof below: the cardroom about 10 minutes prior to kickoff. I think you can see tumbleweed...

Those who have made it down here though include Mr Rumit Somaiya, relaxing with a cup of tea after an "incident" on the motorway. Apparently said "incident" involved speeds of around 100mph, a bunch of skidding, and by some total miracle, no injury to either Mr Somaiya or his vehicle. Or any other vehicles. He is feeling incredibly lucky tonight, so I'm picking Golden Rumit to win it, I reckon.

Holy Moly, who needs Ali Mallu when you have a set over set encounter to thin out the field. The unfortunate recipient of this confrontation was Mark Harris, who is now most likely hurtling down the M1 at break-neck speed (yes, even through the roadworks!). On the bright side, however, at least those chips went to a blondeite, Mr UpTheMariners Daniel Rudd being the player to start off today's festivities in fine fettle. All-in with Jacks v Sixes on an 8-J-6 Flop, all Daniel had to do was dodge that case 6, of which failed to emerge as the Turn and River brought blanks.

Good start for Daniel, but chagrin for Mark who could probably join Red-Dog at another venue if he so wished.

This is the startled expression of Graham Wheldon, his ghast flabbered not due to seeing tikay streak or Ali (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=23) Mallu (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=23) fold, but following a nast King versus Eights encounter which led to Jeff Rodgers flopping a set on the Flop and taking down a nice pot. Probably of scant consolation, Graham was never all-in, but is down to just a couple of thousand as a result. I think he'd rather seen tikay streak in truth, would certainly be cheaper.

He may not look like much, but this is the foreboding image of a talented young lad, Jim McShane having torn up the local scene over the last year with numerous cashes. The Luton regulars will know him, and probably speak highly of his game, but the general public won't, as Jim himself confessed to there barely being any sign of his mug on the Internet. So, this picture is a rarity, and one that we should all be grateful for.

The board changes as frequently as David Bowie's image, but it is currently reading 46 entries, a very disappointing figure indeed and one that surely reflects poorly on the future of festivals like these. Personally, I'd be very sad to see them go, but I wouldn't be surprised if they disappeared from the poker calender come 2008.

alternatively Grosvenor could spend a few quid promoting them properly and they would flourish ... maybe they DONT WANT poker players in their casinos ??

Remember this guy from the blonde bash? If you were there on the Friday night, then you certainly will, his impromptu karaoke performance of Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell being a sight for sore eyes... nope, hold on, a sight for creating sore eyes.

Anyhow, he's a familiar face with the Vic boys, but rarely seen on the UK tournament circuit, so we should be honoured to be in his company this evening. Judging by his current body language, he doesn't seem to be too chuffed to be in mine.

One theory is that they are happy with small numbers due to the difficulty in accruing dealers.

instead of turning this into a thread about whether the festival will live or die can we now get back to what this thread is for and have some news on the 46 that are currently laying a festival event!

Mike Moore is on maybe twice his starting stack after a couple of very exciting hands. His Ad Kc proved good against whatever Craig Owen (who in my mind is a curious hybrid of Daniel Craig and Clive Owen and thus the Ultimate James Bond, but is in reality nothing of the sort) mucked on the J-5-A-6-K, three-hearts board, bumping up Moore's stack and leaving Mr Owen down to 4 or 5k. Next hand he found himself involved with the delightfully named Terry Mason and also Mr Karim Louis, and was again triumphant with his 9s- Js on a Td Jd 9h 2d 2s board.

Jeff Buffenbarger's A-J is no good against his neighbour's A-K on an x-Q-x-T-x board. "Couldn't you have put that one down?" he whines, stealing his neighbour's King and trying to put it in place of the raggy river. Dealer seems unamused.

I believe this gruesome twosome are neighbours Graham Hiew and Ben (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=46) Turnstill (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=46), the former, I believe, one of the people to come up with visor sunglasses which allow you to see your cards, although I could be wrong.

Anyhow, whilst Graham has dropped down to 7.5k, Rookie is faring much better with what looked like around the 13-14k mark. He's obviously been taught well.

Is this your man, ITB? If so, then say hello to Shieldsy, who my spider senses (or, more accurately, the player list) inform me is more accurately known as Allan Shields. He's currently on 9,700, so less movement there than a nun's knickers.

The player list isn't necessarily the most reliable due to the alternates striding in at the last minute, but we believe this young whipper snapper to be the unusually named Dervis Ozkarapinar (no relation to blonde's Karabiner). I was going to remove the red-eye from the photo, but then changed my mind to prove how menacing he really looks. "He looks like he's about to explode," observes one Danafish. But, explode he hasn't, instead spending his time finding the American Airlines. "I've had a bag of spanners," complains Harpit Garnham, "but this guy keeps getting Aces." One hand I just witnessed saw Dervis bet a paltry 1.5k into a 5k plus (there was definitely one 5k white chip in there) pot. Jim McShane couldn't resist the call on an 8s 3d 9s 8d 5c board, but quickly mucked when his opponent confidently revealed the Rockets.

Taking time off from his flourishing model career, the chiseled features and long locks of Ryan Fronda have joined us here in sunny Luton. Ryan's not one for fireworks, but has excellent patience that often proves lucrative. His last fold was a good one though, table neighbour, Martin Lawton betting out 1k on a 2s 3h 4s Flop before showing 6c 5c. I think he was ahead...

Rookie is currently on 12k. As reported earlier, he was up to 14k early doors. This came about from two hands. Firstly, he managed to hit trips with A-4 versus Q-Q on an A-A-x Flop, before making up the small blind with Td 2d and being treated to a 7d 8d Tc Flop. By the time they reached the 2s Turn, Rookie was re-raising an 800 bet to 2,100 to take the pot down uncontested. Apparently, his opponent showed Jacks, which had limped pre-flop. "He was thinking of raising pre-flop," commented Rookie, "so I was worried that he might have Sevens or Eights. Thought I'd stick in 2.1k to find out."

With just 5 tables here today, big hands don't come in as thick and fast as they would do with 10, but when One Hand Rumit's in the game, you can always guarantee at least one funny tale, as Dana will explain.

Rumit is OUT. Here is the story as related to me from the next table where  he is now munching on some kind of tuna fish salad.

Finding himself with Aces, as you do, he has delighted when Tracey Troy raised to 300. A bunch of people called around and so he made it 900. As you do. With your Aces. Tracey folds but there are other callers.

The flop comes Q-2-2 and it checks around to Jeff (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=196) Rogers (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=196) who bets 1k. Rumit makes it 3k and Jeff promptly goes all in. After some umm-ing and ahh-ing, Rumit calls. Jeff triumphantly turns over 7-2. "Oh well," sighs Rumit, "it makes a change from Kings beating my Aces." Must have used up all his luck for the day in not dying on the M1.

As usual, Rumit took his beat well. Obviously it was nigh on impossible to get away from with a Flop like that - "I thought no one woudl have paid 1,300 to see the Flop with a Two." - but oh how wrong he was. "At least you have a story," I joked. "But why couldn't it have been Kings or Queens or something? Why 7-2." he replied. "It was suited," I added.

He hasn't. Anyway, Allan's on just under his 10k starting stack. Jeff's on around 12k.

the place is more of a night club at weekends catering for the clubbers but usually provides some nice fodder for the cash games later on.

also there is a couple of big fights tonight on the tv so expect it to get busier!

Jim '77dave' McShane is OUT.

"What happened?" I asked.

"Jim Reid," he replied abruptly.

There was a slight pause where I wasn't sure if that was the end of the informative tale, but after a brief poke he coughed up.

"I limped under-the-gun with A-K, and so did he in 4th spot with K-4. K-3-5 Flop. I bet, he called. Seven on the Turn, I moved all-in, he called and hit the straight with a Six on the River."

"He called an all-in with K-4?" I asked bemused.

"Well, I only had 1,500 at the time," he replied honestly.

"How did you lose the rest of your stack?"

"Tens into Jacks, Jacks into Aces, and Queens into Kings."

Say no more.

Evening Snoops and Dana, several requests but im sure you'll have time as this is the 1st time you have updated a SNG.

Best of luck to the Luton regs, Terry Mason, Jeff, Mr.Garfield (complete with mid-life crisis diamond earing :) ) . Also bol to UptheMariners, class thinking poker player.

Also could you ask Jim who did what in the £400 final yesterday, hope he came second.

Finally can you give my apologies to rookie who i owe some cash to but couldnt make it today as im pretty sure im dying. Wish him luck too, not that he needs it after winning mansion......again.

cheers kids.

We're having trouble identifying this chap, so if anyone recognises him speak now or forever... well, just speak now please. We think there's a small chance he might be Lee French, but we're not 100%, so for now he's going down as Pinkeyboy.

Pinkeyboy is currently on circa 15.5k after check-raising Mick McCool's 1.1k bet on a Flop of 7c 4s 7d all-in for 14k. Mick mulled it over momentary and scratched his chin before making the fold, perhaps bamboozled by the sudden all-in overbet.

Daniel Rudd is in the thick of the action one again, but was it case of pinchy pinchy or er... handy handy. Anyhow, make your own mind up, but with Jeff Buffenbarger raising it up to 375 and being called behind by both Dave Courtney and Driton Haxhiaj, Daniel threw in 2k to force all three players to fold. A hand or a steal, any guesses, I could probably find out.

Is that Mr Jeff Buffenbarger you're after? Because if so, then BOK!

He's out. Not sure what happened to do all the damage beforehand, but he shoved for his last 2k or so, only for the limper in seat 8 (sorry, don't know his name, I'll try to get a photo when the beagle gets back with the camera) to re-raise all in. "Oh no, he trapped me!" cried Jeff, and indeed his Kh 7c was no match for the dominating Ad Ks that Seat-Eightyboy was holding, and the Jd Td 5d Qd Kc board ment that Jeff was still very definitely losing at the end of the hand. No hard feelings though, handshakes all round before he wandered off to join the terrifying Saturday Night Gambling Party currently happening on the main casino floor.

His name is indeed Lee French. When I poker him on the shoulder, he almost jumped out of his skin like a leaping salmon. "Christ," he said, "you scared the crap out of me." Apparently, Lee' not feeling well today, one of many flu sufferers. I'm sure 1st prize would solve that problem.

A very large pot indeed, like so:

Mr D Shearer raised to 650 from the cutoff, only for Tony Ringe on the button to make it 2650, only for Stephen Holden on the small blind to re-raise all in for another 4850. I know it was another 4850 because Tony Ringe got as far as asking for a count before he folded. Holden showed Kings.

Here is everyone involved except the guy who won. And some incidental dealer norkage. Should you need it.

Double-up for Ali (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=23) Mallu (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=23):

I believe he open-shoved for 6225 on a 2s 4c Kd flop and was called by Lee French (he of the pink shirt in seat 9). Mallu is holding Kh Jh and French is holding -arrrghhh!!! - a superior King (I think it was A-K). But a rivered Jack for two pair and Mr Mallu stays in.

Here is Mr Maggu, I mean Mallu, upon seeing his opponent's hand.

As I joined Table Alterman, there was a board of 5s Th Ad 5h and 4.5k in the pot. Surprisingly, the bet from Driton Haxhiaj was only 1.5k, but it was enough to force Tony Ringe to fold.

By the way, you know they say nothing rhymes with syringe, how about Ringe, or do names not count?

Allan Shields is on 17,000 after knocking out who he described as "the guy with the Birmingham accent three seats to my right." Now, I'm no Mrs Marple, but considering that Stephen Holden has a broad Brummie accent, is no longer in the tournament, and was sitting on that table, I'd say he's our man.

Anyhow, it was a pretty simple hand, Stephen raising, Allan re-raising, Stephen pushing and Allan calling... all before the Flop. Big Slick versus Cowboys, no change, and that's all she wrote.

Oh my god the entertainment's gone MAD. It's very, very loud, and someone's singing Get This Party Started in the style of Shirley Bassey. Hopefully there are dancing girls. Your man Snoops is on the case...

In reference to Alex Martin's inquiry from earlier on, it was Greek Jack who won the £400 event earlier in the week. He chopped it four ways, but took the trophy back to the East Midlands.

Terry Mason, who I hear chopped the £200 this week, is currently hovering around average with 14,850.

Mick McCool, who was down to 2,200 at one point, is now flying high with several thousand. The horse's mouth informed me that it was an all-in jobby under-the-gun with 9s 7s. A call from behind with A-Q, but the T-8-6 Flop soon put a stop to that. Not spades though. "That would have been freakish," said Slick Kid.

Mr Danny D'Borin moves in on a 2h 7s 2s flop. The rather glum-faced pink-shirted gent below dwells up for a very long time before folding. Another victory for the mighty 2-7! Maybe. Probably that's not what D'Borin had. I just made it up.

A really astounding hand between Rob Garfield and Pink Shirtyboy.

Rob raises to 1200 preflop. Pink Shirtyboy calls.

Flop - 5s 6s 3s - Pink Shirtyboy checks. So Rob puts him all in. As you do with your pocket Queens. Now here's the astounding bit: Pink Shirtyboy calls!

Rob Garfield - Qh Qd

Pink Shirtyboy - wait for it wait for it - 3h 4d

Turn - Js

River - 4c obviously, doubling up Pink Shirtyboy. "I can't believe he made that call," fumes Rob to me a few minutes later, "For his tournament. For his tournament!"

Ben Turnstill has taken a major hit of courtesy of Dervis Ozkarapiner. With a 6h 4h Ts Flop lying patiently on the felt, Rookie raised Dervis' initial 2.5k bet to 10k. Dervis had less than 10k in front of him at the time, so the decision was for his tournament life. With Rookie's stonecold glaze plastered across his face, Dervis tried to breakdown his foe by asking, "So, you have a flush draw?" Feeling obliged to respond, Turnstill temporarily side-stepped his silence by replying, "I have better than that".

Following a momentary huff and puff, Dervis chucked in his chips and flipped over Jc Jh. At this point, and I think I knew exactly what is in Rookie's hand due to his answer to the prior question, the youngster showed 8h 7h for the monster draw. any heart, any nine and five - in fact, he probably didn't mind the call, especially as he had chips behind.

However, come the decisive Js and 4d Turn and River, Rookie could do nothing but tap the table and congratulate his victorious opponent on a nice hand.

The current repertoire from the band:

Started with Get This Party Started by Shirley Bassey, before moving onto S Club 7's 'Don't Stop Moving' and that Pato Baton number (rap and all) 'Come Back'. The Equals sung the original, if I... ahem (smartens tie)... remember correctly.

Anyhow, I think they're singing the Bisto song at the moment, although I'd have to double-check that.

Mick McCool has a new toy, which I must admit I found rather underwhelming - it is a collection of magnetic bits which may be pulled apart and stuck together in, um, a straight line, or, um, a series of small triangles. "£9.99 on the internet!" he enthused. "Isn't that an amazing toy?" I mutter, "You were ripped off," at which point he stops talking to me. But he's really enjoying it:

Although Daniel Rudd was down to 7k, he is now back up to the dizzy nosebleed inducing heights of 24k. He dropped down to 10k after his T-9s (which was raised from the button and called in two positions) hit a T-9-7 Flop but was beaten by A-Q which hit top pair after making what Daniel believed was a somewhat suspect call to his bet on the Flop.

But fear not, because out plucky hero's column was soon sprouting chips again as he flopped a straight with T-9 on a Q-J-8 Flop. Initial raiser Dave Courtney continue bet (or is it betted?) the Flop, Daniel smooth-called and another player pushed all-in. Funnily enough, after Courtney had stepped out the way, Daniel decided to call, finding that he was in pretty good shape against his opponent's A-Q which failed to escape the Mariner grasp.

On a similar and actually sort of gross theme if you think about it too hard, Mick McCool just called me over. I give you: Ryan "The Goat" Fronda. Because Ali Mallu and I are milking him like a goat."

He's still insisting that his name is James Bond, even though I know very well that it is the less espionargy Yilfer.

To make matters even more surreal, he keeps asking me to take his photo, yet when I took this last snap, he decided to glance over a the cash game at the last second.

If Santa ever went bad and slightly off the rails, this is what I imagine he'd look like...

Terry Mason, whose name is amusing to apparently no-one but me, is OUT. Q-8 on a Queen-high flop was no good against Rob Garfield's A-Q and he's gone, apparently putting his trousers on to leave, like he wasn't wearing any under the table all that time. "Who by?" I ask.

"Me," he replies.

"What happened?" I request enthralled.

"I raised it up with 8-5 under the gun?"

"Under the gun?" I said, convinced I'd made a mishear.

"Yep, and that guy [Yilfer (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=783) Shevket (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=783)] called. "Did he show?"

"Yep,"...  ;carlocitrone;

"So how did you fold?"

"Well, it took me a while."

"But you must have had a reason."

"I got a read on him. I worked it out. Raising under the gun, he'd expect me to call with a hand."

The band has finished for the night but I don't think the girls are going anywhere, there's not much else open in Luton this time of night and anyway they're not going to get far on those heels. tell them to hang on pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee im 30 miles away..... be there soon.

Any pics of them?

The band or the drunk girls in small clothes? The band has finished for the night but I don't think the girls are going anywhere, there's not much else open in Luton this time of night and anywhere they're not going to get far on those heels. They'll still be here when you arrive, in one state or another...

Sorry, no photos, I'm sort of afraid of them.

I'm staying here then, besides my girlfriend will kill me if she finds out im driving there to see scantily clad individuals in heels consuming alcohol.

Dave Shearer and Mike Moore check down a raggy board. Mike turns over Q-9. Dave makes a noise like "WAAAAaaAAAAaAAAaHHh! and turns over Q-T to take it. Much hilarity.

Golly gosh, where's the camera when you need it? When there's no hand, there it is, dangling around my neck like a Tom Jones' medallion, but now I see a three way all-in (yes, THREE WAY!), it's nowhere to be seen. The action that warranted a snap involved early pace setter Jeff Rogers, Irish Open casher Danny D'Borin and the lesser known (well, a new face to me anyhow) Darren Smith.

With all the chips flying in at the speed of light on a 3c 8d 9c Flop, it was on their backs time, with Darren the shortest stack, and Jeff the biggest.

Jeff Rogers = Kc 7c

Danny D'Borin = Ac 9d

Darren Smith = 8s 8c

An ineffective 3d Turn and 4s River gave the main pot to Smith, and the chunky side pot to D'Borin, but, miraculously, no one was eliminated.

The resulting chip counts are as such:

Danny D'Borin -- 32,250
Darren Smith -- 21,875
Jeff Rogers -- 14,100

"I wasn't sure what I was going to do," added Smith, "whether I was going to be the flop or what. Luckily, they did all the work for me."

It sure is easy this game.

Allan Shields seems to have somehow slipped down to about 6.5k. Doesn't seem too miffed though. Similarly Rookie seems to be on around 7k currently.

As I snuck out of the cardroom toilets (why I was snucking, I'm not sure), I was graced with the presence of a major hand taking place on the nearest table. With the distant sound of the mega powerful hand driers (seriously, they nearly blew my pants off) still whirring away in the background, Driton (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=133) Haxhiaj (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=133) was in full re-raising mode, sticking it to Allan Shields' initial 3.5k bet on a 9h 2h 8c board with an extra 5k to play.

Expecting the action to fold back round to Shields, it suddenly stopped at Daniel Rudd who unexpectedly fell into a pit of pensiveness. With eyes darting back and forth, and even Rookie blowing out his cheeks to me as if to say "blimey, son, what a pot", Rudders meekly slid his single columned stack across the line for an extra 13,325 more.

With Shields quickly stepping out of the way like Superman dodging a speeding bullet, Haxhiaj dipped into the mindfield of his brain and, as Chili would say, took a trip to think tank town. After the odd twitch of an eyebrow, Scrabble Man eventually made the call and turned over Th Td. However, although I'm sure he had his man on the flush draw, he could only weep in dismay as Rudd proudly revealed 2d 2s for a set of ducks, leaving Scrabble Man requiring a bingo and a miracle 2 outer.

Turn = 9d

River = 4h

... and it looks like Mr Rudd is your new chip leader with... er.... lots.

Prize Structure:

1st = £12,870
2nd = £7,350
3rd = £5,510
4th = £4,410
5th = £3,310
6th = £2,200
7th = £1,100

Seems like a nice flat structure to me, and it's good to see them paying just the top 7 instead of the top 10.

As the night's gone on, I've been rather impressed with the atmosphere down here. It was empty when I arrived, and just no buzz about the place whatsoever. But as soon as the clubbers come, the bar fills and the band plays their repertoire, it's all hustle and bustle again and the party atmosphere returns. The bar is packed and the tables are heaving - great news for the casino. Does this focus on a non-poker audience, however, greatly affect the cardroom, the attention it will get and the numbers it ought to attract - I'm not sure, I guess only the regulars can answer that, but it would be a shame if it didn't meet it's potential as the poker facilities are excellent with enough room to swing ten cats tied together.

There is a bunch of betting which results in Ali Mallu going all in at some point on a Ts 6h 5s 5c board. The other gent below (aaaaaanyone?) announces that he is pot-committed but is nevertheless going to make "a very stupid decision". He folds.

Rookie Ben Turnstill is OUT. All in I believe preflop with Js Kd against Dave Shearer's Ad 5h, it was looking pretty good on the flop, worse on the turn and dreadful come the river.

Board - Kc Th Td Ac Ahrt

He hovers for a moment while the chips are counted, but he's covered and gone.

After Mateyboy had made it 1,200 to play and Ryan (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=390) Fronda (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=390) had smooth called, Mark Segal saw his opportunity to pounce and pushed in his short stack with Pocket Sevens. Whilst Fronda sipped on his tea and generally looked disinterested, Mateyboy counted his chips and called with J-T off suit. A Ten on the Turn and it was home time for Segal ,whose raised arms of disgust on the Turn spoke volumes. However, he still shook hands with his assassin as he left, although I suspect the motorway will be taking the inevitable hammering.

Wondering who our mystery sniper was, I politely tapped him on the shoulder like a preying vulture and made a request for his name. Oddly, he was hesitant at first, and for a moment, I actually thought he'd forgotten his name. Eventually, he conceded his forename as being Arco, but cringed when he moved onto his surname before asking, "Do you need my surname?" "Nah, should be able to work it out from your first name," I replied. On returning to the pressroom and, subsequently, the player list, I suddenly realised why he'd acted so reluctantly.

With 33 points, we have a new challenger to the Scrabble Man throne with...

Arco Zuyderduyn

"I'm Dutch, you see," he later confessed.

"Oh, so you travelled all the way from Holland to play at the Luton festival," I joked, fully expecting him to say that he lived in these parts.

"Yes," he replied sternly. "I did."

"Oh."

Nice! Good luck all and l have to admit it was a much better atmosphere and better service tonight, but the buffet was pants.

Found this tikay quote lurking on the forum and thought it would be worth reposting here too. I hope tikay doesn't mind, but it's highly interesting and makes a lot of sense.

Quote
Luton? Well, each to their own. Personally, I adore the place, & I intend to use Luton & dtd as my default Venues, as they both care so much for players best interests.

G-Luton opened early in 2007, & struggled for a while to sort enough Dealers. But the initial batch who were trained up are just super, ever smiling, friendly, & long-suffering at the rudeness of many players towards them. More are being trained as we speak, & the progesss Luton are making is exemplary.

Valets - or lack of them - is their achilles heel, but again, they are on the case. Ditto their Catering, which is just awful - but they know that, & are working on improving it. By the way, I always lave the Valets a drink at Luton when I (so rarely.....) get a draw, because it's not the Valets fault that there are not enough of them.

Most of all, the regulars are a terrific bunch, & that counts for so much. Nina has grow in stature beyond recognition, Adrian is a future Top TD, very much in the Yogi-mould, & Alastair, though he gets some stick, has his heart in the right place.

The chairs & tables are beautiful, & no cardroom in the UK - even dtd - gives the players as much "space" to wander around without falling over side-tables or asking players to "give me room to get past please". It's achingly large & supremely comfortable, it's just lovely to be able to stretch your legs & wander around freely.

The range & stucture of their week-in week-out Tourneys is as good as any in the UK.

The reception Staff do that weird thing that other venues - especially The Vic & Brighton Rendezvous - find so hard to do - smile.

The music - they have a "turn" most nights - is just horrendously loud & incredibly distracting, but we have to rermember, it's a Casino, not a pure Poker Venue (a'la dtd), & so they have to cater for "Casino Tourists" who come to play the table games, especially at weekends. On Friday & Saturday nights, the place absolutely heaves with people, "night out" folks, & this is where Grosvenor make their income, not from Poker. Were it not for that income, there would not be the superb Cardroom at Luton, so I guess we have to endure the damn music on that basis, & remember thart we can't have our cake & eat it.

This week's Fessie has suffered with low numbers - as most Fessies have in 2007, due to the "series poker" craze, but plans are afoot to address that in 2008.

As an aside, & apropos Luton "developing" their new Cardroom, have a guess at how many Staff they employ - it's the top side of 120! And how many different nationalities within that? 32!

It's not easy starting a new Poker Venue, as Rob & his dtd Team will testify, & I think Lution are working very hard to be one of the UK's Premier poker venues. These things are not easy, & take time. I know of no other Venue, dtd excepted, that is trying so hard to please their clientele. We are lucky to have them both, in my opinion. Festivals & work apart, I shall share my Live poker time between Luton & dtd - 4 days a week at each.

Meatloaf impersonator David Young is OUT. He raised preflop and was called by Arco Z (i'm not even going to try). He shoved on the 2c Tc 8c flop, which must have delighted Arco as he insta-called with his two pair.

David Young - Js Qh

Arco Z - 8s Ts

Turn - 3h

River - Aspades

"First preflop raise I've made all day, and he calls me with T-8," complained a disappointed David, fleeing the cardroom like, um, a bat out of hell.

Arco sure is causing a kafuffle down there, but he can't have met Mr Ali Mallu before. Pre-flop action led to both players checking down a 5h Kd 2h board before Mallu called a 2.5k bet from Arco on the Td Turn. A 6s River, and it's bet (3.5k) from Arco and re-raise (as nonchalantly as ever) to 18.5k from Mallu. "Why so much?" asks Arco. After a while, and to the surprise of the table who clearly think the Dutman's a nutter, Arco folds Ks Qs face-up.

Frustrating times for Rob Garfield as a battle of the blinds encounters with Arco Zuyderduyn ends in misery. I assume there was pre-flop action, but with Rob in the small blind, his 4k bet on a Tc 9s 7d Flop was called by his nemesis before both players opted to check a Kc Turn. An Aspades on the River seemed to kick everyone into gear, Rob betting out 5.5k before folding quicker than the production credits of a porn film as Arco announced all-in.

With Rob holding Ahrt Qh, it was a good fold in the end as Arco happily revealed his superior Ac 7c. Garfield down to 20.7k.

Down to 13 now, and it's Darren Smith who is the latest to feel the wrath of the daring Dutchman, Arco Zuyderduyn (please don't make me write that name again). All-in with Ahrt 2h on an Aspades 6h 9h Flop, Darren probably would have welcomed a call from most, but with Arco staring you down at the other end of the table, you know you could be taking the walk of shame in a few seconds time. And that's exactly what happened, Arco making a good call with Ad 8d and pipping his opponent following a Kd and 4c Turn and River, that crucial Eight just about making the difference.

Can I just say before I report any more poker that Alastair is DA MAN and I will not hear another word said about him or the cardroom. After spending several hours trying to find sandwiches and eventually being told that the kitchen was, in some ways amazingly, and in other ways totally understandably, out of food, I think it was really obvious I was going to cry because 10 minutes later Alastair appeared with a bowl of fruit! For me! I have a bowl of fruit! No-one else has a bowl of fruit! Apparently it involved properly hunting through the bowels of giant fridges and things. "Where've you been?" said Snoopy as I scuttled back to the press room with my fruit, "The Garden of Eden?" Well I do feel blessed...

As we approach the nitty gritty, play has slowed down somewhat with players looking slightly the worse for wear and doing their utmost to guarandamntee that spot on the final. It's mostly been raise fold fold fold, but I did spot a couple of confrontations, Lawless forcing Moore to fold with a 2.8k to 7k pre-flop re-raise before Mr Mallu, on the other table, calls a River bet from Ryan Fronda on a 5c 3s 4h Ts Aspades board with Ahrt Js after checking in the dark. Looks like Ryan was on the nick, as he waited to see Ali's hand first before commending "good hand" and mucking his cards.

Double-up for D Shearer.

Dervis Ozkarapinar raises to 2850 utg. Derek Lawless to his immediate left calls, but Shearer goes all in from the button for around 15k total. Dervis gets out of the way, leaving the decision to call with Lawless (someone please insert funny Lawless joke here), which he eventually does.

Lawless - 7h 7d

Shearer - 8h 8d

(At this point one of the cardroom guys comes over to ask whether anyone minds if they turn the volume up for the fight. Everyone sort of grunts assent.)

Board - 3d 9s 6c Ac Ahrt

"Nice hand, mate," sighs Lawless.

After a lengthy discussion, it has been agreed that play shall end for the day with 12 players remaining.

Ryan Fronda was very eager to carry on playing, one of many not keen on returning for Day 2 without a guaranteed pay.

"I think everyone was happy to give 8th and 9th 750 quid, Snoops," commented Ryan. "I reckon we could have got rid of another three with one more level, especially with this guy [pointing at Arco's stack], he's being calling with all sorts."

However, Carmel was adamant in her decision, saying that she was stopping the tournament because of the upcoming noise from the crowd watching the boxing. "It's not going to be a good atmosphere for poker," she admitted. "I'm making this decision because it's for the good of the tournament."

And on that note, the decision was made.

The match is just this second about to start, so I think we're going to call it a day and rejoin you tomorrow at 3pm sharp. There's a bit of a football atmosphere here now, with plenty of booing, chanting, and whatnot, and I don't think my throbbing head can take it at the moment. So, with that in mind, it's goodbye from me and it's goodbye from her. Toodle pip.

Crikey, you know the connection's dodgy when you can't get the smilies to load up. I'm afraid you'll have to imagine the smilie with the fork. Nighty night!
