Title: Which Mobile? Post by: Laxie on January 22, 2009, 10:00:09 AM I'm due a free (or close to it) upgrade and have no idea which one to pick. Have never surfed the web or done video with a mobile before, but would like to if there's a good one in the lot for that job.
These are the ones I have to pick from: http://phones.meteor.ie/phones Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: Jim-D on January 22, 2009, 10:04:53 AM Tocco FTW
Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: TheChipPrince on January 22, 2009, 10:08:44 AM Nokia 95 if you dont mind paying, Sony Ericsson 910i if you do...

Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: kinboshi on January 22, 2009, 10:14:44 AM I'm probably going to have a go with the G1 phone on T-Mobile when my current contract expires. I've heard there are a number of issues with it, one being the battery life, but as I sit at a desk all day - that shouldn't be an issue.
Unfortunately, it's not available in Ireland. So I'm not being helpful. ;marks; Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: Acidmouse on January 22, 2009, 10:19:08 AM Aye N95/96 are good, I love surfing on mine and the GPS is handy. Battery life is poor tho.
Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: Laxie on January 22, 2009, 10:30:19 AM When you say poor battery life, what amount of time are you talking about? The specs say 6 hours talk time and 280 standby. Is that not the real story with them?
Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: TheChipPrince on January 22, 2009, 10:43:53 AM When you say poor battery life, what amount of time are you talking about? The specs say 6 hours talk time and 280 standby. Is that not the real story with them? With the Iphone (similar spec), talking and standby uses relatively little battery life, but if your browsing the net, or using GPS/ Google Earth or watching YouTube, the battery gets zapped pretty quick... Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: Ecosse on January 22, 2009, 10:45:12 AM The battery life is fine on the Nokia N95 / N82 if you set the phone up correctly.
E.g. switch off 3G if you get no or poor 3G reception and use GSM only, switch wi-fi scanning on only when required etc. I get about a week in between charging my N82 with average call use. Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: Acidmouse on January 22, 2009, 10:53:11 AM Well If I use the gps its about 2hrs..or I browse the net its 3hrs, if you use simple to phone people its most probs 6hrs.
Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: thetank on January 22, 2009, 11:10:53 AM What make have you used before.
The way they design the menus and whatnot of the newer models will always have have similarities to their predecessors. Might be an idea to go with the same make of phone you've used in the past so that there is a less steep learning curve in how to best go about using all your new phone's features. Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: phatomch on January 22, 2009, 11:38:28 AM i had a n95 (b) and i couldnt fault it, everything you could need. But i have updated now to the nokia e71, and this one is brilliant if anyone gets the chance for this one take it.
Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: Laxie on January 22, 2009, 11:49:41 AM What make have you used before. Previous phone was a Motorola. At the minute I have a Sony Ericsson, but I'm not afraid of reading manuals for a new phone. My Husband has always been a supporter of Nokia's mainly because they made a builder phone he was hard pressed to break. But any average Nokia he's had was a write off within 6 months, so that kind of put me off them. That said, I won't be working on construction sites with mine, so it might be ok. These http://uk.samsungmobile.com/mobile/SGH-M110 (http://uk.samsungmobile.com/mobile/SGH-M110) are going for £20 from TMobile at the moment - they came out stronger than the JCB Phone in a recent destruction test. Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: Laxie on January 22, 2009, 12:29:02 PM I assume this is a contract phone? My phone is and the replacement will be too. Been checking out the one for Timothy (also on contract), but they (Meteor) don't seem to have it. He'd have to switch providers and it's costing a heck of a lot more than what Rod posted. Found it here http://www.expansys.ie/p.aspx?i=161230 for cheaper than he'd pay with a new contract, but not sure if he can use his SIM card in it. Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: RED-DOG on January 22, 2009, 12:45:54 PM I didn't take an upgrade and got a 50% reduction in my bill instead.
If you don't need a new phone, don't get one. Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: Laxie on January 22, 2009, 12:56:02 PM They aren't as kind over here with reductions. Always looking for a way to increase prices, but NEVER reduce. That's why I always take advantage of the upgrade, needed or not. Only chance we have of getting something back from the feckers. Plus we use the old phones as replacements for Timothy when breaks his.
At the same time, need to be careful which ones we pick as we're stuck with them for the next year. Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: Rod Paradise on January 22, 2009, 01:23:32 PM That phone I posted is a pay as you go, and locked to TMobile, but can be unlocked very easilly.

I'll probably go for a Flext plan, which includes a decent amount of calls/texts and unlimited internetz. However, T-mobile charge you 12p/minute for your voicemail (and this doesn't come out of your allowance). It's not a huge amount, obviously - but not ideal, and I begrudge paying for something that should come out of the allowance. If you get a business contract, the voicemail is free. Why - I don't know. So here's my question. If I get my company to order the phone on a business contract (and I pay them each month for the phone), will there be any tax implications for me or the business? Title: Re: Which Mobile? Yes, that was the plan I was looking at - but I might go for the business equivalent one (with free voicemail) that gives pretty much the same package for about the same price. The G2 is out soon, but apparently it will be dropping the physical keyboard for a larger screen and software keyboard. Backward step imo. You downloaded the latitude software so that you mum knows where you are all the time? Waste of time probably - either on your computer or in bed, sleeping. Title: Re: Which Mobile? I have been with T Mobile since I had a mobile phone, donkies years. I am on the old Flx 35 which gets me £180 combi p month with a 25% discount. So pay around 26 pm. My 18 month contract is up so decided to renew and get a G1. 9am I got told it would be £30 pm. So i said I will go have a look at it in more detail and call back with any questions. 9.15 I decided I would go ahead. I called back. It had gone up to £35 pm but if I wanted the £30 deal it would cost me £ 250 for the phone. On thier web site it is advertised at £31.50 but he said I cant have that discount as I am not eligable lol. I have never been late paying I have been with them for years and today I think after the convo I have just had with them I really need to be looking towards a for a different network. Any other decent phones out there?.

Got back on the phone to cancel. This time spoke to a third person. His offers. 1. £35 pm Free G1. 2. £31.50 pm via cancellation of exsisting contract, get a new one via the internat offer with a new number. Free G1 3. £30 pm plus a one off payment of £30 to keep my number. 4. Free Nokia 5800 £30 pm. So loyalty does not really count, but I have not cut off my nose to spite my face and gone with deal 3 as it will come in very hand for tinternet. Plus by paying the extra 30 it is only £3 more over the 18 months and I get to keep my number. Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: AndrewT on February 06, 2009, 11:22:36 AM The way to get the best deals from phone companies is to not be loyal - jump about from network to network and don't stay with the same company.
People used to not do this because it meant having to change phone numbers but that's all changed and you can keep the number even if you change networks. 3. £30 pm plus a one off payment of £30 to keep my number. I've changed networks and not had to pay to keep my number - I'd tell them where to stick their £30. Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: The_nun on February 06, 2009, 12:06:49 PM I didn't have to pay the 30 if I changed network. That would have been free. Paying the 30 was to stay with the same network keep my number and have the phone I wanted for 30 pm. I could have cancelled and gone to another company but a different phone and no charge to take my number. Or cancelled my contract, got a new one with T mobile in order to get the phone I wanted and paid 31.50.
I have messed up again I guess. fml. Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: The_nun on February 07, 2009, 09:56:41 AM It's arrived. OMG HelPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: Ginger on March 18, 2009, 08:52:51 PM Does the iPhone have a camera? Well, yes it does, but a pretty dire one for the price of the phone. As for the rest of the update list, apart from all the apps store stuff, it sounds more and more like my N95 - in fact, any decent mobile under 3 years old.... All this update does is bring it a little more in line with any other phone available, instead of being dismally lacking in many areas. And as for cut copy and paste being very advanced... LOL! this has been on my last 3 phones! (I'm assuming many others too, not just nokia's) It still isn't good enough to even tempt my to change my mind, it still is nothing special IMO. Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: kinboshi on March 18, 2009, 10:26:35 PM I love the G1, and its open-sourceness (new word). I'm so glad I chose to get it. But I'm sure the other phones you mentioned will do what you want. Horses for courses. Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: The_nun on March 19, 2009, 09:09:00 AM I have had the G1 for weeks now and it is just wasted on me. The mapping system has come in handy when the sat nav screwed up a couple of times, managed that ok. It is my own fault, I have never been a textbook learner, much prefer to be shown. Being as I do not know anyone else that is a tad impossible.
BTW Kin, can you really cut and pastes?. I can not even fathom how to go back a page, lol. Title: Re: Which Mobile? You'll have to come to DT (http://www.dusktilldawnpoker.com/)D (http://www.dusktilldawnpoker.com/) one weekend, and I'll spend 5 minutes showing you how to use your phone! It really is dead easy. Going back a page...you just hit the back button to the right of the trackball... As for copy and paste, yes it's easy to do - I'll show you that as well. Title: Re: Which Mobile? I will use my phone as a Walkman, to browse the net and to take pictures...but I don't know which one to choose! I'm leaning towards the Samsung atm... i am really liking this nokia e71. primarily i use it for email and phone but itworks really well with some other stuff - installed Slick and now can use virtually any IM - browser is more than decent - bluetooth streaming of music to the Parrott kit in my car (very cool!) previously i was using a blackberry, but found it a bit cheap and plasticky. so so far its a thumbs up I've had the G1 for two days. I'm so glad I chose to get it. But I'm sure the other phones you mentioned will do what you want. Horses for courses. Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: The_nun on March 19, 2009, 04:40:29 PM Whilst

Works brilliantly by the way. Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: The_nun on March 19, 2009, 05:26:03 PM I have activated the wireless thing but not yet tried to connecy this way. I was devastaited when i realised i could not download poker sites.

Post by: kinboshi on March 19, 2009, 07:47:00 PM I managed to get the wireless tether working for mine today, so that I can connect to the internet through the phone's connection. This was something I planned to do, but was hastened by our connection going down in the office today. Works brilliantly by the way. so u can use the phone as a dongle? june thts huge. how do i do that? There are two ways. One requires root access and hacking the phone [ ] I'd recommend this to you That then enables you to use the phone as a wireless dongle in effect - and more than one computer can connect to it. The other method doesn't require root access, so is safer and easier. There's an app you can download to do this. I've not downloaded it yet, but I'll have a look at it and when I do I'll then explain what you need to do to get it to work. You have to be careful if you do use it as a tether though. I think the usage is capped at 3GB or 5GB a month, and if you exceed that the speed of your connection will be capped. So it'd be fine for browsing and as a back up connection in case your broadband goes down, but not for downloading loads of video or porn. Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: Bongo on March 19, 2009, 11:17:32 PM I could do that via bluetooth with my old Nokia! :P
Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: kinboshi on March 20, 2009, 09:08:28 AM I could do that via bluetooth with my old Nokia! :P [ ] I'm sure that's the same as it acting as a wireless router to more than one computer. Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: Linux on March 31, 2009, 11:33:06 PM Just ordered a new phone, was a toss up between the G1 and the blackberry 8900 curve. Went for the 8900 (12 month contract) i'll probably get the g2 or maybe even g3 in 12 months when the android OS improves and they get a decent battery.

Download blackberry app world via ur BB browser, this has most of them. Apss i have Viigo - updated sports scores ,schedules etc. You can also use it for rss feed for latest news, i use mine for lufc news. Flickr - You should alreadt have this, i didnt make much use of it at the start but now love it Facebook - If you have a facebook account msn - As above Google maps - Brilliant app. Better than blackberry maps Quick pull - if you ever need to reboot you dont need to take the battery out Twitterberry - if u have a twitter account Betfair - good app, no need to go on the betfair website. Few more tips i found. - Use UMA all the time wen ur in a wifi area (mainly home) fpr PERFECT reception - Move all you icons around for easy by pressing the blackberry button - The case it pretty cool, it locks it automatically when you put it in (some magnetic sensor or summit) - You need to give the case a few days to "wear in", you'll probs find it pretty tight to start with I'll tell you if i find any more cool apps Title: Re: Which Mobile? Post by: kinboshi on May 20, 2009, 01:38:39 PM That's a class 4 SD card, someone was advising me to get Class 6 or better for mine (the G1). I have no idea what these classes mean, so am going to have a look now - but if anyone knows, please post and save me some time.
Edit - oh it's dead simple. It's the speed of data transfer. So class 4 is twice as quick as class 2, and class 6 is 50% faster than class 4. Not a big issue most of the time I wouldn't have thought. On the G1 there's an option to run apps from the SD card (rather than the phone memory), so if you're doing anything like that the speed would be an issue. But for storage and access of media files, meh. |
