Title: I've never...
Post by: kinboshi on May 29, 2013, 11:10:36 AM
Inspired by the posh boy, here's a thread where everyone can post about things they haven't done, things they haven't seen, etc. We might have done a thread like this before, but can't remember it if we have.

I'll start us off.

I've never ridden a motorbike.

Chewed gum

This is the first one I'm really surprised at.

I mean, how has anyone been through their life with at least trying a stick of gum?

I don't chew gum at all, and it really isn't a very appealing habit, but I would have said 99,99% of adults in the UK have at least tried it.

Tal is unique.

I don't know which part of that post is furthest from the truth. (Well I do actually,  but l'm touched all the same)

I can't believe anyone is intimidated by me. I go out of my way not to tread on toes. I write at least half a dozen posts a day and then delete them in case they offend anyone.

The most recent was going to be the start of a series called 'Markup debate of the week' but I decided that some people might think I was having a pop.

Are you winding me up Keith? I'm regretting the op already.

And if we take a different opinion to you in thread we usually end being either proved wrong or humiliated or (usually) both.

On the reasonable assumption that you're not going to watch TOWIE and have sufficiently high sartorial standards to avoid the onesie

It's the best way to be at a music festival, bar none.

Although you might be unlucky enough to pitch your tent near someone like this...

Well this is applicable to nearly everyone?

Aside from brushes with it at like 6 or 7 years old I have never eaten tomato ketchup. Always ask for burgers plain with cheese and always do the check after i receive it. I absolutely love pizza though. Weirdest thing about me I think.

Sashimi and curry - two of my most favourite foods in the world.

Of course, with Japanese food there's a lot more to choose from than just sashimi or sushi if that's not your bag.  Out of interest, do you like smoked salmon?

No I hate it, raw tuna also or anything like that. What i need is some of my mates to organise a night out at a restaurant so I can try a bunch of stuff. Part of the problem is I don't know what anything on the menu is, and when I look at the display food they often have in these places, especially abroad, it does not look appealing to me in the least.

I had a similar fear/skepticism of Japanese food but I love it now. The good (and expensive) restaurants actually bring you a big selection of stuff out and tell you what its all about, what drinks it goes with etc. Vegas is awesome for Japanese food.

Yo Sushi and Wagamas are both good starting points. Neither of them are 'proper' Japanese food, but a good bridge. You can get 'normal' stuff like curry and noodles there too, so you can still get something thats not 'icky'.

I take issue with the italics but I'm careful in general when it comes to discussing most things and especially challenging "Big Red".

I've never been to South America. Thats frustrating. Never been to a major international sporting event, ie World Cup/Euros, RWC, Olympics. I've been to both Wembleys, the old one for a football qualifier, England vs Bulgaria. The game was 0-0 and we were sat in the rafters. My dad probably paid £120 for the experience. I used to go to Wembley most Friday evenings in the late 1960's for the greyhound racing.

There was no heating in those days and in the winter they used to have those brazier things that people roasted chestnuts on in the corridors and everyone gathered around for a warm in between races.

My Dad owned greyhounds in the 60s. They had a runner at Wembley and were in the Royal Box (dunno why) and I always remember my dad teasing my Mum that should have gone to the loo to sit on the same throne as the Queen.

I've never forgotten things when drunk.

I've never been to England.

 ;whistle;

Any experts on VISA's about?

Who can help me get this beautiful girl into this country?

Just a 2 week holiday is fine for now, but ideally I want to keep her here forever 8)

She has a Belarus passport.

Get married? ;)

Know a lot of lads who have brought girls over on tourist visa's. You really need to use every bit of info she has on reasons why she WILL go home at the end of her stay (the visa is actually for 6 months so she could visit multiple time I think in that period), that is the crux of it.

So she needs to show them any evidence that ties her to going back to her home country.

Such as

-House/apartment/land ownership and/or rental agreements
-Job contracts
-Family ties, maybe caring for an elderly relative or whatever reason you can find/make up and show 'evidence' of  ;whistle;
-If she has traveled to other countries as a tourist and gone home after

etc, but basically ANYTHING that shows she will/wants to go home

There are companies that can help you put this together, but they aren't cheap and there are some scammers out there so beware, they make promises and claim they have inside 'contacts' but are full of shit.

Thanks Woodsey. What are these "companies"?

I know nothing of ones that specialise in visas for eastern euros so can't recommend one, however here is an example of one that operates in Thailand for Thais coming to the UK, I would look for a specialist eastern euro company who operate on a similar principle to these guys so you don't get ripped off.

They do no visa/no fee (apart from a small deposit). If you were to use one of these companies for your good lady I would not be parting with chunks up front, they need an incentive to actually get the visa. In fact this company rarely fail as they simply won't take you on as a client if you don't meet the criteria to be successful. The rules for getting visas are pretty clear, if you provide enough info for them to tick their boxes you will get the visa, they don't try to trip you up.  That is what I've been told by people who have done it.

Good luck  :)up

Great advice.....also money wise, they must show access to enough funds for the length of the trip...accomm food travel etc.

She could also potentially come on a student visa to study?, ....but it must be relevent/beneficial to her career path.

Generally speaking its a whole lot more difficult to enter the UK for a visa national in recent years, and you really have to prepare your case carefully.

Correct, if you do it thoroughly, cover as many angles as you can and give them no reason to say no, you will get it so I have been told. Same for fiancee visa too if Alex so chooses....  :-X  :D

That is why some of these visa companies can be useful, they know what is required to get through and will have a good idea if your case is strong enough and help advise you what else you need. But as I said before, buyer beware with some of the visa companies....

I believe it. We were given tea and coffee as children, but lots of people my age didn't give to their children. It wasn't really to stop them from ever drinking it; more in the belief that it isn't good for children but they will start drinking it when they get older. There are plenty of young adults now who never got around to trying it when they got older and aren't bothered about doing so.

I've never consciously drunk alcohol.

I always add consciously because I once mistakenly picked up someone else's drink (a Bacardi and coke that happened to be next to my coke) and I've had a drink spiked once at Uni by someone who wrongly thought it would be funny.

Spirit of honesty and all that, no pun intended.

I can totally understand not liking tea/coffee. I don't like tea much and only really drink coffee after a decent meal.

But people have never tried them?!?!?

Just plain strange. It might just be the thing which makes your taste-buds sing with delight.

Coffee, tea and to a lesser extent alcohol baffle me tbh. Aren't you in the least bit curious what they are like and why so many people enjoy them on a daily basis?

Are you like this with everything, I would be bored silly if I wasn't trying new experiences regularly.

I don't think you can be entirely sure.  My daughter is 5 and she will tell me that she has never had many things, but she has and has just forgotten.  My one year old has definitely tried coffee, admittedly most of it ended up down her front but she definitely tried it.

As others have said, surely you should just try it.

Never seen The Wire and a whole host of TV shows I'd probably like in the last 5 years or so.

Never been to a classic horse race or Royal Ascot despite going to the races fairly regularly for 25 years or so.

Never been tempted to support Man U or Liverpool.

Never been in a fan of the English Rugby Union team.  Not sure why this is as Amy other England/GB team I will happily cheer on.

I believe it's a Tinie Tempah (sp?!) Reference? Alex - bit like Grieg but more uptempo.

Yes, for absolute clarity, I wasn't suggesting stato was both extremely rotund and lived in a very small house.

I'm quite capable of getting myself into trouble, thank you. Don't need any help!

Mr Tempah decrees he has so many clothes, he keeps some at his Aunt's house. I imagine she lives locally or that would be a logistical nightmare.

I've never had a cup of tea or coffee

Oh fuck off, I just don't believe this.

But, when you were like 14,15,16 didn't you think.. "hmm, all the adult population of the UK drink it, let's try a cup to see what it's like"?

I would totally accept it if you tried it and didn't like it, but to have never tasted tea or coffee is just bizarre.

Nope, those coffee quality street things scared me for life as a kid!

Dad made me a cup of tea when I was about 15 I smelt it, that was as close as it got. Know about 15+ people who have never tried coffee. Reckon there are people on this forum in the same boat!
Mmmm, coffee Quality Street. They don't do them anymore  :'(
When I was little I remember visiting everyone I knew in the New year and looking for their sweetie tin. Jackpot every time! I must be the only person in the world that liked them.

I love coffee sweets and when I can find them, I love chocolate covered roasted coffee beans.
They sound delish! Shame there isn't a mainstream coffee choc.
There are Revels, but you get about two if your lucky and you have to eat the 'orrible orange and raisin ones to get them!

For me it's the fans.

My Dad took me to an England v Ireland game at Twickenham when I was 9 or 10 and even at that age I thought "who are these wankers?" (without using the word wankers because I didn't know it then)

Same reason I can't support the England cricket team (The Barmy Army are worse than the rugby fans) or the England football team.

In fact I surprised myself at the Olympics that I actually rooted for British athletes (apart from the Brownlees obv) because I found the other people cheering them on were agreeable human beings!

You see less than Mr Wenger! Was with you on the first two, although I have seen a few episodes of the Voice.

The Simpsons would be my first choice of specialist subject on Mastermind. Obviously, it lost a lot of its lustre a few years ago,but when it was hot, it was as good as it gets.

I've never sung lead vocal in a song in front of strangers.

But I'm gonna.

I've been playing lead guitar in bands for getting on for 25 years and I never get nervous. I've always got stuck in with a few harmony backing vocals too.
I'm OK, I can hold a tune, but I don't have the delivery of an even half decent lead vocalist.
My least favourite thing about gigging with a band has always been sound checking my mic, because even just in front of band mates and the sound engineer, singing a cappella scares the shit out of me.

Me and a singer friend of mine have finally got round to putting an acoustic duo together, to run along side the Rock band I'm in.
We're planning to hit a local open mic night in a fortnight to give a run out to half a dozen songs, and at the same time, I'm going to force myself to play and sing one alone.

I've chosen to have a crack at Hallelujah, working from the Jeff Buckley version obviously.
One problem I have though, is I have yet to get through it without crying like a little girl.
Sticking with it though, figuring that an emotional performance might compensate for the lack of actual vocal ability :)

I love you for this.

There are at least half a dozen songs or poems that I can't get through without crying.

The four songs I can think of that regularly get me are:
Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley
Burn by Ray Lamontagne
I Will Not Be Fine by Justin Taylor
Grew On Me by Tim Minchin.

Others can get me if the mood is right, I'm with the right people, in the right places or I've had a couple of drinks, but those get me most of the time.

Bloody wimp

Went to see Simon Friend (from The Levellers) do an acoustic gig in Derby with his acoustic band called Seismic Survey.  Anyway, he does a lot of Levellers song in his set.

He said he'd gone through some tough times during the year, but I had no idea what he was referring to.  When he was about to do one of the songs, called Elation, he said was his late wife's favourite and he wasn't sure if he'd be able to sing it.  Sure enough, he broke down half-way through and cried through the song.  Was probably the most emotional performance I've ever seen.  Obviously so very sad for him, but yet felt lucky to have been there to witness it.  Felt a bit guilty actually.

Found this recording of that performance on YouTube.  Quality isn't great as it's from a mobile at back of the venue.  Will probably mean nothing to those who don't know the song and don't listen to the Levellers though.
