They used the African Cup of Nations as their World Cup qualifying tournament.

Egypt beat Ivory Coast 4-2 on pens to claim a record 5th African Nations title. |

I'm sure that I read that The African Cup of Nations was used for World Cup qualifying to ease fixture congestion.
Perhaps it was the ACN qualifying that was dual-purpose.

That would make more sense but then why aren't Egypt in it now? Only thing I can think of is they do WC qualifying seperately. |
