However, the ref NEVER SAW the stamp, instead, he sent Rooney off for PUSHING Ronaldo.

Agreed - the ref was taking no action until the push, the replays showed this.

He blew up, didn't move, pointed the direction on play and froze. Then there was the push, then he blew up again, called Rooney over and sent him off. The BBC pundits ponted it out. Seems pretty obvious to me.

All the match reports say that Rooney was sent off for a stamp on Carvalho's groin area.

I've not seen any that say he was sent off for pushing Ronaldo, apart from your report that is....

Again what i hate about pub watching games... I didnt see a red card but i dont doubt there may have been one warrented...IMHO i think this world cup has been ruined by 'safe' offside decision and obvious diving cheating.... FIFA really need to revgie what has been the poorest advert for football in my lifetime, including all acts of hooliganism...

I have to say that i thought the Rooney sending off was a joke. He never meant to stand on the Portuguese players groin, it was accidental.  Ronaldo comes running over to the ref demanding a card, and Rooney just light pushes him away. The ref gave the  for the push, which is beyond belief.  If that is worth a red card, there will be no players left after corners/free kicks.
Ronaldo will not/should not come back to the UK, as he will be given a load of abuse.   Another Alpay transfer in the offing if you ask me.
Rooney will get some abuse by the mindless fans, but does not deserve it IMO.

when the ref blew up he pointed in the direction we were playing. it looked very much like he was awarding us a free kick for the portugeezer trying to leg Rooney up after losing the ball. Rooney didnt stamp on him he was trying to get clear with the ball and the portugeezer wouldn't let him. yellow card for the push by all means but straight red is stupid. Ronaldo is only one of dozens of players who go down FAR too easily. For England Owen and Joe Cole are the worst offenders but we all know which teams are the worst for it.

Diving and play acting should be the number one issue  for referees as it's the most common form of cheating today.

I absolutely, 100% agree.

This has been a poor World Cup so far.  Only brilliance from Argentina, and last night from France, brought some sunshine through the dark clouds.

England were poor in every game.  When Owen Hargreaves is the only player shining in that midfield, something is very wrong.  Lampard and, more so, Gerard were very disappointing. 

I hope McClaren now drops all the dead wood and brings in the youngsters.  Lennon could be a massive star for England in the future.

So a player trying to gain a tactical advantage for his team through deception is apparently worse for the game than tribal acts of physical violence? Eh, playacting is a problem in the game but I disagree that it's worse than hooliganism was at its height.

Playacting is difficult for the referee and assistants to spot in many cases- the solution is compulsory retrospective punishment where it is caught on camera- and not just bookings, hit 'em where it hurts, their pockets.

Also worth keeping in mind football has changed greatly over the last decade or two- for all the complaints about FIFA interference with referees it's worth remembering that creative, talented  players in the 60s 70s, even 80s were subjected to absolutely horrendous treatment from opposition defenders, at times getting literally booted around the pitch. The protection given to players at least allows top talents to perform without worrying about where the next fly kick or stamp is coming from.

No, that is not what the post says. Even though it was at 2am after a night out it should still read correctly.

Obviously violence is worse than this cheating in the wider context of life. However as an advert to watch football this world cup has fallen very short as a result of the things i said, above acts of violence. On the pitch activities have been an aweful advert for football this year, the off the field acts have not been so to the same extent
