Betting Into Dead Pots

Hi All

My first "new post", so forgive me if it is in the wrong place or has been covered a million times.

Was playing Poker this evening..  Mid stages of an MTT - Short stack went all in, 2nd guy called, 3rd guy on the BB also called.

Flop came 779.  BB checked, other guy went all in for just over the pot.  Other guy thought and thought, before laying down, what he said was K9.  The raiser had something like J9.

As it turned out, the J9 won the pot and the guy went out of the tourney.

The chat box started talking about when you should and when you shouldn't bet into a dead pot.

The guy who bet said that he thought his hand was best at the time and did not want to be outdrawn.

The other guy pointed out that in general it is accepted etiquette to check it down so as to try and limit the opportunities of the all in guy to catch a card.

In general, I believe it best to check the guy down and take him out.  I have often checked, been bet at and then taken 2 out.

But when should you bet into a dead pot - should you ever bet into a dead pot - should you just play the hand and ignore the dead pot?

I would be interested in your thoughts...

Depends on so many things, what stage of the tournament it is, what your stack is etc.  If you're sitting nowhere near the bubble checking it down to eliminate a player is not standard practice, but betting into a sidepot with 3 high is not wise either.  If you have a huge stack and your on the bubble it doesn't really matter to you if someone is eliminated or not and you'd rather give yourself the best chance of winning the pot.  You may even prefer to keep it from reaching the bubble if you're on a weak table and can keep stealing blinds during this time.

I think too much is made of it at times, basically its pretty obvious when it should be checked out and at any other time anything goes.

I think betting into dead pot to protect your hand is fine and accepted play especially in the mid stages of an MTT nowhere near the bubble which is a bit different. Getting the all in player out of the tournament is not the priority here, winning the pot is IMO.

It can be taken too far i get criticised in the chat box of an STT earlier for doing this, i think this etiquette has been misunderstood by many lesser poker players.
