Kids say the funniest things

I have a 6 year old little girl called Charlotte. Bright as a button she is. When I was playing for a living last year we used to use the walk to school constructively. amongst the activitys was learning capital cities. she's got about 20 memorised from across the world.
I've taught her that London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast as capitals in their own right of countries within the UK. She's being brought up to think of us as English and we share the UK wiht our Scotish, Welsh and Irish friends.
Today she asked me about WHY countries choose the capital cities they do and why the UK has four. I explained about seaports and international commerce in fairly basic terms and about the idea of a central government. I'd explained that the countries in the UK had their own capitals and were in charge of some decisions but that London was in charge of some decisions that covered the whole UK.
She summarised the situation by saying,
"so people in Scotland and Wales are English but a bit wobbley?"
what could I say?

At least you could teach her correctly.
There is no Scottish or Welsh, its all British! And check the passport for proof. Nationalty: British.
The only exception is when they come from England they can be allowed to be English. Like in the tennis. Tim Henman, English. Andy Murray, British.

I take the national pride of my Scottish, Welsh and Irish friends seriously. I know many Scots particularly treat the English like an occupying enemy rather than fellow Brits. I actually get a bit pissed off by the hostility from the Scots towards the English but I know the history is pretty unpleasant. I'd be happy if we we're British but I think the reality is my celtic neigbours don't necessarily agree. I dream of a day we behave as a species rather than subdivided nations, religions and colours but I am afraid that's unlikely in my lifetime. Charlotte will grow up believing the same. pass it on

This isn't the time to get serious. But on a serious note, I do agree with you. As one of the "auld enemy" living amongst the "auld enemy" it makes me see things differently. And the seeming arrogance of the English is enough to make even my blood run warm.
I know as a northerer how pissed off people get at being "run from westminster", and I don't doubt those4 north of the boarder (and in wales) feel the same if not worse.

I know exactly what you mean bout our scottish friends, i dont want to stereotype and i know i've probably just had some bad experiences but the majority of scots i know took so much pride when england get beat that they go out and buy the opposition shirt, i didnt realise portugal was in Scotland!! lol, i like to see Scotland play well in the footie, same with Ireland, N.Ireland and Wales, except when they play us!!

Havin met Adam I think he just suffers from the same "mis-understood post" syndrome that I have gone thru. After all the comments at bb3 lots of people now have a different opinion of me.
This internet has a lot to answer for I tell ya!

Its easy to see why the attitude of the Scots toward the english (even when its meant in jest) is still visible today when you have all the commentators in sport making their typical comments, banging on about 1966 etc etc, as an Englishman myself I do get embarrassed.

The other day my little girl, Hannah, and I were talking about where we live. She knows that she lives in Ruislip, and I explained that her cousin Rosie lives in Redhill. She pondered for a moment and said "Rosie lives in Redhill? Well I live in Pink Ruislip"
