School Dinners

Is it just me or are you sick of hearing about School dinners?.  It seems every time I switch on the TV there is something being said about School dinners. 

On the news yesterday it seemed obvious that people just aren't interested in being instructed on what to eat. Many of the healthy eating options brought in a few months back haven't been successful and only a quarter of the 'healthy option' meals on the menu are sold each day

 In my opinion we are being treated like morons, are people really so stupid that we need to be instructed on what to put in a pack lunch box?   I saw a young guy ( Some kind of health official ) on the News this morning talking about the new plans to send out healthy eating leaflets to everyone " We will teach people what to put in their Kids pack lunches".   To be perfectly honest, if I ever have Kids I already know what to put in their lunch boxes each day.  It is so bloody obvious, I don't need to be educated.  I am sure every Mother/Father in the country knows as well . It isn't rocket science

Some of the options on the 'pack lunch' list were crazy, these included things like Brie and Cranberry sauce, etc.  I can see it now, mothers going down to their local corner shops on a Sunday night  " Hello there good fella, can I have some of that Brie and cranberry pie please"  what a load of pi.. 

Soon we are going to be given guides on when to go to the toilet, what time to go to sleep each day, how many hours each week we are allowed to watch TV, a set number of hours we must interact with other people, a compulsory period of exercise each day, etc.

Man, I really hate the way the World is heading.  We are increasingly being treated like morons and prevented from using common sense

Actually Sark, some parents DO need educating on what to feed their children. You would be surprised how many kids NEVER have fresh veg (or even know the name of the vegetables when shown to them!)

Some children turn up to school with nothing more than a Snikers, Mars bar and a can of coke for lunch, or a couple of bags of crisps. This is NOT a rarity! Very sad but true.

IMO it's a shame that you need a licence to drive, but anyone can have a child.

Agree with Ginger, For alot of parents its just easier to chuck a couple bags of crisps and a few "treats" in a box and pack em off

I find it amazing that they don't know.  I think they do know, but it needs a healthy eating campaign to shame them into doing something about it.

In today's culture, I think if a TV show like Jamie Oliver can't make positive changes, a leaflet handed out through your door is going to be no use at all.  Many of the people who are responsible for feeding their Kids garbage in pack lunches will also sit at night and watch shows like Jamie Oliver.  If he has had no positive effect,  they are beyond help. Sad but true

On one hand Jamie Oliver is doing school dinner on the other he is a face of the big supermarket chain that sells mass produced food and ready to cook meals.

Then you have some popstars advertising fast food chains and making them cool.

There is a growing problem with child obesity in this country and the fact that the sport activities are reserved for few lucky kids doesn't help the case.

If the goverment really would like to do anything about healthy food it should start somewhere like decreasing licences for fast food chains that polute our hight streets as well as helping to reduce mass farming. 

The list can go on and on.

Carefull, you are making a generalisation. We don't want all Jamie Oliver fans tarnished with the same brush. Do not persecute these people just because they like watching Jamie Oliver.

 I am sure every Mother/Father in the country knows as well .

wrightey is on to is. He's suggesting a massive overhaul of the physical education programme culminating in a quarterly bleep tests for all secondry education kids and the results be included in the scools table ranking. long hard road with that campaign I'm afraid.

actually he's had a massive effect and I'm sure he hasn't finished yet. good luck to the bloke. getting kids to eat NO (not less, NO) reconstituted junk is a great project. I think those parents up north doing chipshop runs at lunchtime for their kids should be ashamed of themselves.

I went on a family holiday recently and every restaurant we went to had a kids menu where every option was burger & chips, sausage & chips, chicken nugets & chips, etc. My poor kid doesn't like chips and would much rather have had a kid sized potion of what we were having. suprisingly when kids are asked to name their favourite dish spagetti bolognaise comes out a clear favourite.

If McDonalds didnt give away a toy with the meal, most small kids wouldn't be interested in the food. by the time they're too old for the toy it's deep in their subconscious that McDs is a treat. buy the kids a £3 toy and cook them a nice shepards pie

There was an interesting piece on the news the other day, i don't remember where it was but a group of mothers fed up with the new menu at their kids school were taking orders at the school gates and fetching food to the kids from the local chippie.
They were saying that the new menu was not very varied and that many of the kids simply did not like the food on offer and as a concequence were not eating at school at all.
It's one thing to offer a balanced menu and another entirely to offer nothing the kids want!!

I have nothing against Jamie Oliver.  He taught me how to make bread.  I didn't like the herbs in it though, so altered his recipe
