After months of planning and preperation, the rug was well and truly pulled out from under our collective feet when the intended venue  (Bannatynes in Newcastle) shut their doors without any notice, about 7 days before the event was due to take place !!

Undeterred by such a collossal blow, Davey & Ang worked bloody miracles to find a new venue and accomodation ...and we were all off to sunny Scarborough for a weekend that delivered as much fun as it promised.

My trip started with a train ride to Norwich where i was to meet my team mate and good pal Booder for the long drive up to Scarborough..... All went well and we arrived at our accomodation for the weekend .. The Blue Dolphin haven holiday park !!

After an initial queue up to register and collect our bed linen, myself and Booder set off to find the caravans that were to be our home for the next 3 nights.
We knew we would be sharing our van with Rod and Big Laz, so imagine the laughter as we were greeted by a caravan containing 1 double bed, 2 twin beds with about a 6 inch gap between the 2ft wide beds, and a set of bunks that were designed for use by 4 year olds.
Of course we decided right away to tell Laz that he was on the top bunk Smiley ... but once we saw the look on his face we quickly gave him the double bed !!

Myself and Boo went to the main entertainment complex where we awaited the arrival of everyone else .... of course while we were waiting we took full advantage of the refreshments at our disposal and its safe to say that by the time the Irish team arrived we had sunk a few and all was looking well with the world.

Once the Irish team had unpacked and rejoined us, we made our way into the main bar/entertainment venue for a few more pints and just happened to catch the start of that evenings entertainment which consisted of 3 or 4 scantily clad girlies and one lad in tights and a headband that were putting on awful American accents and acting out some sort of parody on the old "Fame" movie ... The gist of which was for the audience to watch them all dance and act and sing and then vote for which one they wanted to get the "job" of performing solo... Needless to say, with flushy in our company, we thought it only right to holler and cheer for the rather camp looking and sounding bloke Cheesy  .... he DID win, though before we had the chance to watch his finest hour, the taxi's had arrived and we were off on our first visit to the casino.

At first glance, the Opera House casino was plush and luxurious, staff were very very friendly and welcomed us with smiles and happy faces .... which was nice. everyone made their way to the cardroom, and the added attraction of the cardroom having its own bar seemed to ensure that everyone was well happy with the venue ... and couple that with the fact that the valets were gorgeous, friendly and always smiling added to the attraction, they were constantly ASKING people if they would like a drink .... there are very few places where that happens in this country, unfortunately the norm is for the valets to go missing as soon as there is a crowd, but this was different.

I fell in love with one of the girls, her name was Honi ..... she was a gorgeous dark haired polish girl with a talent for dropping and smashing an ash tray or dropping her empty drinks tray every time she did her rounds.. I got the blame from Gary the card room manager... he said it was because she was all shy around me because she fancied me LOL and i made her all jittery.... although Im sure that she was just nervous that she had a fat half pissed stranger flirting with her Cheesy Cheesy

We played a £20 rebuy on that friday night and we got on really well with the locals, They were very welcoming and greeted our input into their prizepool with glee !!   when it got down to the business end, The Irish boys came out on top finishing 1-2 ... Booder was the man for team GB with a 9th place finish.

Most of us left for the Caravan park at about 4.30 am, Although our taxi, which contained myself, Laz, Booder and Rod Paradise was the last to arrive, and we set off from the camp car park to fin our van .... needless to say we got lost after i famously said "I know a short cut, if we just cut through here ..."  half an hours route march later we were safely in the caravan and  i was getting the expected grief for dragiing 2 drunken jocks and a norfolk yokel around a caravan park at stupid O'Clock in the morning Smiley

Saturday arrives and I am awakened by the dulcit tones of Booder screaming " OY FAT LAD, GET YER ARSE OUT OF YA PIT, BREAKFAST IS READY !!!!
I get up and go into the lounge area to find a full cooked brekkie prepared by booder which me, Rod and Laz enjoyed so much that we christened Boo "Mummy" and told him how he would make someone a lovely wife...... I cant repeat what he called us ... but im sure you can imagine !!!

I suppose I should at this point mention the only unfortunate incident of the weekend, we soon heard word that after we had left the casino, one of the Irish boys got a tad over excited and some trouble had gone off with some locals in the Casino ... suffice to say that the Irish guys were as saddened by his actions as we were and they took Immediate action, the guy was dropped from the team and sent home immediately, they bought some flowers for the staff and were great ambassadors in apologising to everyone for the actions of their team mate and along with their strong actions in dealing with the offender bridges were rebuilt and all was well.

Before the event itself we were all treated to a lovely 3 course meal and the guest of honour Roy Houghton was welcomed and gave a small informal speech and i had the honour of presenting his lovely wife with a boquet of flowers.

I also had the honour of proposing a toast to "Absent Friends"  after we had a moments silence in respect to the untimely deaths of Mark who died aged 22 just a few weeks after winning the North East Charity shield, A victory that would have given him a place on the England team at the upcoming 4 nations ICHUC event, And also for Laura, a much repected and liked dealer who travelled all over the country dealing at various Grosvenor festivals.

Onto the event itself and it all started so well for Team GB, we won our first 2 games and at one stage led 4 - 2 ... however it wasnt to be and a series of cruel outdraws at critical points in games went against us, and by the time the Captains were pitted against each other, the irish team held an unassailable 6-4 lead... Flushy tied up the last game to ensure that we finished the unlucky but not disgraced 6-5 losers. The game was played in fantastic spirit, it really is a credit to both teams that something that is obviously taken so seriously and the pressure is immense ... believe me, that both teams can play it hard and still enjoy the occasion and share a laugh and a drink when its all over. CONGRATULATIONS IRELAND, you played well and won with grace and dignity, for that you have all of our respect.

after another late night at the casino most of us ventured back to the caravan park, although this time big Laz was insistant that we get the cab to drop us off right outside our van.... he didnt fancy another late night stroll around the place LOL ..... the long and the short of it is that we ended up with a caravan full of drunks who were all having a great time drinking and singing and playing cards.... Laz had his I-pod speakers and an enjoyable time was had by all .....although we did get an appearance from Davey at about 6.30 when he popped into our van to ask us to keep the noise down .... Apparantly Ian Bradleys version of "flower of scotland" had dogs from upto 7 miles away howling for ages LOL.

As you can expect there was plenty of banter flying around, and big Laz to his credit took plenty ... he was smoking this cigar that looked like a frigging table leg !! and telling us how he loved cuban cigars, fine food and good wine ... I think the final straw was when Bradders told laz that he had seen those cigars in Lidl's next to the 4 pence beans and the 7 pence biscuits ... which lead Laz to announce that we were all "Palestines" .... by the time he had realised that he had meant to say "philistines" it was too late, and his slip of the tongue ensured that he went to bed with the sound of howling laughter and mockery ringing in his ears... although on his way to his bed , I copped the remains of his can of lager over my head which was a fair swap for the amount of entertainment he provided us with.

The rest of the weekend went by in a haze of poker and drink in almost equal amounts... although i think the drinking may just have shaded it Smiley .... lots more happened that was sooo funny, i honestly havent laughed so much in ages it really was a cracking weekend in the company of people who just know how to enjoy themselves and have fun.

One quick tale that amused me afterwards although not at the time .... Monday morning and Laz & Rod were leaving early to catch their train, leaving myself and Booder in bed. Anyway, i was awoken by the sound of a local voice shouting down a walkie talkie "GARY GARY ... YOU SAID VAN 22, BUT THERE IS VODKA, ASH TRAYS, SHOES AND A JACKET IN THE LOUNGE... I DONT THINK THEY HAVE GONE."  At this point i jumped out of bed wearing nothing but my boxers to be met by an old boy of about 60 ....I said "sorry pal we are still in bed" to which he replied "well you bloody shouldnt be, you should be out" now im getting a bit irate at the way he is speaking to me and I keep calm and ask him what time we are supposed to check out .. "10 O'clock" he smuggly replies ... "what time is it now".. I ask ( I genuinely didnt know as i had just woken up) ... "20 to 10" he replies  ........ "well F**K OFF and come back at 10 then" was my predictable response .... you could see from his face that he knew what was coming as soon as he looked at his watch and realised it was only 20 to 10.... after a brief exchange of him having a rant at me, and me telling him that i was gonna miss him when we left, we finally started the journey home after was was truly one of the most enjoyable weekends of my life.

I have to say a few thankyous.... to Gary & Julie from the cardroom, all the staff at the Opera House, from the restaurant to the management, they all seemed to give everything to make sure we had a good time ... service with a smile.. its a shame that everywhere isnt like that, they were really fantastic and I hope that management get to read this. The valets (especially Honi) were all gorgeous and great fun... again the smiled and genuinely worked their socks off..first class !!
Thanks to the Victorious Irish team, great bunch and it was really warming to see just how much winning meant to them, yet they were gracious in victory as much as they were gracious in defeat last time... respect to you all.

To the GB team, I also say a heartfelt thankyou, everyone joined in the spirit of the event and everyone played their part in making it such a memorable weekend and event.

To Davey and Ang from P4C who managed to pull this out of the bag after such a massive blow from the closing down of the original venue ... I dont know how you managed it, but CONGRATS !!!

Heres to the next one ...CHEERS !

kev asks the taxi driver , if ever anyone has instead of paying the fare, offered him a free "nosh".

driver thinks for a minute and then says no. It then dawns on the taxi driver we were talking about women passengers...

booder says "if you thought it was men we were talking about, why did you have to think about it"...
