In one fell swoop a single piece of US legislation has changed the landscape of Online Poker for ever.
Firstly this is a travesty of democracy in that the prohibition measures are an addendum to a "must pass" bill to boost port security, thus allowing no proper debate on the measures.
Secondly it is the single worst example of protectionism seen for years. Many US states may be oddball and straight laced but this bill is a moral contradiction to beat most others. It is not the product of a widespread national fear about what Online gambling might do to young people. If the legislators really were worried about the immoral effect of the internet it would apply the same act, with the same restrictions, to the pornography industry where Americans can still pay for content online via US Bank credit cards and the US payment mechanisms in general.
No, this bill is about Protection. Protection to the US horse race betting industry, exempt from this bill. Protection to the state lotteries. Protection to the Las Vegas land based gambling concerns. It is also about appeasing the religious right, that most unappealing to me of the support bases of the incumbent Republican party.
It is also about control. The next move I suspect will be that these same American legislators rebuild the Online industry based on a new set of regulations creating an industry dominated by...yep you've guessed it.....American not Offshore Gaming companies.
To quote one blogger...."and the Americans have the nerve to call the French weasels".

More proof (as if it were needed) that dubbya is a twit.
"When George Bush was campaigning for the presidency, as incumbent vice-president, one of his stops was in Chicago, Illinois, on August 27, 1987. At O'Hare Airport he held a formal outdoor news conference. There Robert I. Sherman, a reporter for the American Atheist news journal, fully accredited by the state of Illinois and by invitation a participating member of the press corps covering the national candidates, had the following exchange with then-Vice-President Bush.
Sherman: What will you do to win the votes of the Americans who are atheists?
Bush: I guess I'm pretty weak in the atheist community. Faith in God is important to me.
Sherman: Surely you recognize the equal citizenship and patriotism of Americans who are atheists?
Bush: No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.
Sherman (somewhat taken aback): Do you support as a sound constitutional principle the separation of state and church?
Bush: Yes, I support the separation of church and state. I'm just not very high on atheists."
I'm Reading "the God Delusion" at the moment and felt this needed highlighting on here.
Read back George Bush's statement again.
Bush: No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.
Now replace the word Atheist with "Black" or "Muslim" or "Jew". It brings home what a narrow-minded bigot he really is.

Just thought it's funny the poster is calling someone a twit for saying something they never even said. As if there were not enough close to the very intelligent original poster 1987 and presidential race would have been a give away.

I have just finished writing a short, 4-page booklet entitled 'How To Play Online Poker'.
Unfortunately, it is for the American market only and costs just $50.
As we speak, I am printing off 12 million copies.
Upon receipt of the $50 (cheques only please), your copy of the publication will be sent via airmail.
There is a special offer on at the moment, for the first 12 million customers.
Buy your copy and $40 will be deposited into your chosen poker site courtesy of me.
With regards to any withdrawals you may wish to make in the future, I currently have a special offer on.
Any monies accumulated will of course be placed back onto my bank card. For a small fee of just 2%, I will personally send you a cheque for the remaining amount.
Y'all have a nice day now.
