A very nice man from Betfair has just phoned my up and said that if I place a £10 bet in the next 24 hours he will refund my tenner........free money so why not.

Trouble is I dont follow horses, football or any kind of sport so Im at a bit of a loss as what to bet on.

Im thinking of maybe doing a treble or something so has anyone got any tips?

Also what is the best way to place the bet so it comes to £10.

Thanks in advance.

You tend not to get doubles or more on Betfair.   Do you want to risk the tenner for a high reward or pick something that's going to get you a profit?

For a 'sure thing' tonight you could back Wales to beat Liechtenstein and you'd get £2.30 profit.  Maybe back them on an Asian Handicap of -2 goals (Wales need to win by two goals ) and you'd get £12 profit from the tenner.

Do you watch X Factor or I'm a Celeb?  you can bet on these too if you like.  I've a sneeky fiver on Myleene Klass (lovely lovely lady) at 9.4, she's currently at 5.6 so if she wins, that's a £46 profit for you.

You could use it to do what I'm doing at the moment.  I'm working on a +1 goal or more bet in a football match.  Starting with a tenner and betting everything on the next match.  Not great returns but there are hardly any 0-0's and it soon adds up.  Currently on £58 for the next bet although I may take £30 out of that.

Damn...wish I watched Im a celebrity last night now.

X Factor...no contest..Leonna is a CERT to win and im guessing the odds will be very short.

The football thing looks complicated. <<going to have a look and see if I can find this Asian Handicap thing.

Leonna is odds on now, worth it if she's going to win though.

What did you end up doing?

Stuck the tenner on Leonna to win, I will get £19.50 back if she does, at least I think thats what I done.

Found this a very complicated site. Tried to get a list of horses running on Saturday at any meeting to see if any names jumped out at me and just could not find them. There only seemed to be "the next race running".

Also the betting seems a bit strange with 6 boxes to choose from...I think you can bet against a horse NOT winning and these funds cover the win bets, is that right?

They probably don't have a list of the horses for the weekend yet, it's a bit early for that, they usually only come up either on the morning or the day before.

The six boxes are for different things.  Really there are only two, the blue one (assuming the default colours) is the odds you are backing at.  Underneath the odds is the amount that is available at those odds.  Once this money is taken, the box to the left will move up and be the blue box.

Same principle for the pink box and the two to its right only this is where you lay, or back against, that event happening. The money available in the lay boxes are what people want to back at.  For example, if you want to back Leonna at 6.0, you can enter these odds by clicking the blue box and then changing the odds, then what you want will show up on the lay side with odds of 6 and the amount you want to back it for underneath.

You need to remember it's an exchange and not a bookmakers.  People like me and you say that something will or wont win and the odds are determined purely by what is happening in the market.

There's a lot to Betfair and if you are good, you can make an awful lot of money regardless of the outcome of things.  You can back at a certain price then lay off for a profit regardless of what happens.  I back Leonna at 4.3 and can now lay off at profit.  This can happen a lot and is often called 'greening up'

Phew, I've gone on a bit there.  I hope Leonna wins for you, I've got a few quid on too.  She's by far the best on there IMO and she seems such a lovely person.

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Its taken me long enough to learn poker without getting into all that stuff.

I actually thought about it after I had placed the bet and thought that was rather sneaky, they have lured me into depositing £10 (well £12 actually as this seemed to be the minimum). If the bet loses then I will still have my £12 but its unlikely I will withdraw it so I will probably try my luck with it in the pokerroom.

If on the other hand the bet wins then I will still take the balance into the poker room and donk it off faster in a higher stake game lol

Still its a free bet so i cant grumble.

I will never forget my first ever bet on the horses.

My first serious boyfriend and im 17yrs old, his mum and dad used to study the Saturday papers picking out their horses and Saturday afternoon was a fun packed afternoon in the local snug bar watching the races on telly. So his mum says ...go on have a bet!

She used to do 5 horse accumulators at 10p a go hoping to hit the jackpot and usually getting less than her stake back.

So I say okay and picked 2 horses..El Gitano and Gypsy Woman...just coz I liked the names. I know I paid £1 but dont recall the bet...anyway the first 1 won at 8/1 and she says shame you have backed a donkey for the second race.

Second race comes on and the bloody thing won at 25/1...woooohooooooooooo  I got £117.50 back if I recall correctly but as they say on Mastercard...her face was PRICELESS

hi suzanne, in reply to your post, and for anyone else that likes to back horses, check out racingportfolios the supply tips from about 20 tipsters, very good tipsters at that, you can see the results tables at the site to see who the best are , but if you check the f.a.q page of the site they point out who to follow, they send the tips by email each day for all the tipsters listed, hope this helps. A 12-1 winner yesterday from one of the tipsters from horse border castle (longshots was the tipster, they had 14-1 winner and 6-1 winner last week also.
