of course you have to give up, but why did you check raise the flop?

Because it's a very weak bet.
Though i gather you mean why not lead out (i would for about 2/3rds of the pot).

I wasn't sure if he had AA, KK, QQ, AK or even AQ, so I wanted to see what he did on flop, when he bets weak, I was sure it was an overpair (I couldn't see the value of AA betting this flop), and I felt having checked the flop, it looked as though I was scared of the ace too. So I decided an aggressive raise now was the only way to avoid a showdown. Once he calls, I have to give up though.

I get what you're saying, would you play AK here like this too though?

check raising does a better job of repping the ace in general I think... axiomatic thinking: Chapter 4 "check to the raiser".

I think you should defo lead the ace here, they wont give you credit for having it, which is great when you do have it, but not great when you dont. You wanna convince them you do when you dont, and that you dont when you do.

You need to think what he would be reraising preflop with, your range is too wide i think (AA, KK, QQ, AK or even AQ), AK would reraise more or flat call and no fool reraises with AQ (well some might but it's daft) so i would put it at the overpairs only.
I would lead at any flop and probably any turn if flat called if there was an ace there because it's a good flop for you unless he has aces.
This may look like silly logic but pushing people off a hand on the turn is surprisingly easy Cheesy

I do like the way you played the flop here and anything other than the ace turn you can put a pot size bet in and take it down (after his flat call on the flop - if he has AA so be it)

With the turn being an ace, and the amount of chips he has commited and left he probably calls you all in if you push on the turn (because if you had trip aces why wouldnt you give him chance to hang himself at least once).

In the end in this hand I think you played it right
