We're up to Civ 4 now (and it's a big improvement on Civ 3)
Thank Christ for that.

If you're playing Civ 4, the expansion pack, Civ 4 Warlords, is worth getting hold of.

If you like Civ with a more Sci-fi edge, you should try Galactic Civilizations 2. Played on the biggest map setting and a game can apparently last 2-6 months.

That sounds cool! Is it the same game engine?

No, completely different. More like Masters of Orion II really. The coolest thing is be able to completely design your own space ships from scratch. Website is
www.galciv2.com
It's tough to get into but well worth it imo, and there's a vein of humour running through it all, particularly when discovering techs and in diplomatic exchanges.
For starters, the default leader of the Humans is called Alan Bradley! (Him from Tron
)

Colony Base = Settler
It's the same game really, just moo2 had a whole bunch of different names for factories.

civ4 attracts a lot of super geeky programmers see, they made like loads of different moderations that you can download and use. (for free, they don't need money, they stay with their moms)
They are what you would expect froma bunch of uber-geeks, along the themes of warhammer, lord of the rings, star wars and dungeons and dragons versions of the game.
A different bunch of geeks devote their lives to creating versions with increased historical accuracy, mostly to do with WW1 and 2.
I find it funky to have a bunch of jedi thingys running around instead of warriors. My civilization practises the push-bot religion instead of buddhism, all my cities are defended by zebras, it's the way forward.
Ok ok , I'm a geek too.

Did you play Planescape Torment?
That's a true test of geekhood.
