2 very poor teams at the bottom and one very good team at the top. the rest of us are much of a muchness , all capable of beating each other on a good day.took a while to finalise my batting lineup which is proving to be consistant from 1-5 ( one averaging 100+ , 1 averaging 90+ and 2 averaging 70+ ).Ideally 2 middle order batsmen required. bowlers now performing well apart from my opening pace bowler.always averages 6 rpo no matter what position he plays at. best bowlers are my 2 spinners , Anton averaging only 3.2 rpo.
agree with Sheriff , Moussen Goosen were awesomely strong when i played them.

League: V.64

Team                        Pld Won Tie Lost Points Net RR
1. CF14                        7     7     0    0      28    21.51
2. 33legs                      7     6     0    1      24    14.32
3. Gilo Is Our King          7     5     0    2      20      7.11
4. GBLC Sloggers           7     4     0    3      16     -5.43
5. teesside tigers           7     2     0    5       8     -5.23
6. KBOTW                    7     2     0    5       8     -7.43
7. Glamorgan Reserves   7     2     0    5        8     -8.61
8. Taunton Raiders        7     0     0    7        0   -16.25

Top 3 sides as you can see are head and shoulders above the rest.  GBLC Sloggers are a bot with a very strong batting line-up and hopeless bowling lineup I ran them close on a TIE in first match so hope to reverse that when I play them again.  My next two matches are against Teeside tigers and Taunton raiders so I will have a very good idea of where I stand after those two matches.  Teeside beat me convincingly in the first match of the season however I suspect they were on a GFI whilst I wasn't.  My side has also improved since then so I'm hopeful of a win.  Taunton are another bot so I should take care of them.  If I win both matches I think I'll be pretty much guaranteed a playoff spot.  Glamorgan Reserves on paper look a decent side but have a weak bowling attack and I was able to contain them to under 300 today which made for a satisfying win.  After todays win I'm hopeful of managing 5th place which should give me an easier playoff match.  If I was to win all 4 winnable matches and other results went my way I guess I could get 4th but I'll be more than content with 5th lol.

If your league is that strong Sheriff you could consider going down - will give you an easier season allowing you to get some fans in the ground and build your team a bit for a new shot at Div5 - you might get an easy one next time too!

Yeah, this would probably be a better tactic but it feels wrong somehow.

One of the big weaknesses in the game I've discovered this year is there really was no advantage to getting promoted last season.  Crowds and fan expectation don't recognise the fact that you're in a higher league than before, hence I got a pathetic gate receipt today of <£20k and its taken a win today to get expectation back up to 'hopeful'.

I see there's a Q&A session coming up soon - I might raise it as a point if I remember to log in for it.  Its a pity they don't do a 2/3 1/3 split of league gate receipts as you'd at least get some financial benefit of playing the stronger (i.e bigger) teams week in week out.

Cheers for the updates so far peeps, its been interesting reading.

If they did do an advantage for being in a higher league then people would complain that the older players would have too much of an advantage and could never be caught - it's a tricky situation!

Maybe a split gate is a good way of doing it though - over the course of a season the established teams will gain (or lose) little, whereas a newly promoted team will likely be better off than in the lower division.

League: VI.120

Team    Pld    Won    Tie    Lost    Points    Net RR
1.    Ruswarp Ponies    7    6    0    1    24    22.19
2.    Chorley CC    7    5    0    2    20    10.18
3.    wayno    7    5    0    2    20    1.34
4.    whippo's barmy army    7    4    0    3    16    -0.69
5.    Sheffield CC    7    3    0    4    12    -7.18
6.    edward_villa_firth    7    3    0    4    12    -8.08
7.    Spartak Brum    7    2    0    5    8    -7.43
8.    Zaglebie sosnowiec    7    0    0    7    0    -10.33

At the beginning of the season I had complicated ideas about using a combination of GFIs and TIEs to try and jockey for the second spot. I later realised that setting the default for on GFI for the 20/20 games and buggering off to BB4 had cost my team a lot of energy. My TFI is mediocre on matchdays and even with the use of a TIE or 2 a GFI would be too expensive. So PAN all the way thru' the season for me.
Given my current position and relative strengths of the other teams I will be disappointed if I do not win this league.

Chorley CC are an average side with two outstanding players. One is a batsman (Harvey) averaging 257 for the season and the other is is a very good seam bowler (Oak). They are the only team to have beaten me this season. If you can avoid a ramage from Harvey then they can be beaten, as two sides I consider to be weaker than mine have demonstrated. If I can beat them at my place in Match 11 then that should seal the league title.

Wayno are a strange beast. They started the season under a different manager and I had them pegged as one of 3 teams going for one automatic promotion place (I had thought Chorley CC would have the top spot nailed on). Their former manager apparently lost interest and stopped playing, but his default settings were enough to carry the team unbeaten thru the first five games. Enter a new manager and a new squad and a fixture at Pony Park. They will have to fight for a playoff spot.

Whippo's barmy army are the other team I had marked down as a threat. I beat them well enough today, but it may be more difficult at their place. They employ a strange strategy of using 5 all rounders who's batting is much stronger than their bowling.

Of the other teams 3 have only recently got new managers. Spartak Brum may be a threat having defeated Chorley CC a fortnight ago, but I suspect Chorley risked a TIE and Brums manager enthusiastically used a GFI in his second match. edward_villa_firth have been managed all season but are still very weak.

My own team is well balanced, all my batsmen can score runs Holsgrove my opener has scored  600 runs at a fair lick, including a 200 not out. Roach can come in and tear an attack apart. My bowling attack is slightly weaker and consists of 3 seamers and 3 spinners, one of the spinners is a new aquisition. All my bowlers have performed adequetly without setting the world on fire, I'll need to improve in this area before next season. Two of my seamers are allrounder trainees who should be strong enough for division 5 and add the depth to my batting that I suspect I will need there. So my main goals before next season are to improve my bowling attack to division 5 standard and improve the stamina of the bowlers in particular in case they bring in the first class game.

Only joined the league during the week in the run up to the first game of the season and spent two weeks having no idea what was going on - played batters and wicket keepers as bowlers as didnt really have much idea what was going on. Then spent a week on the transfer market buying players that had a good battrick rating but turned out that they didn't have much else going for them.

Seem to have figured the whole ranking bit out now and will soon get to release a few players that are "surplus to requirements". Won my last 3 league games to move from 7th to 3rd and it may be that i've given away too much ground early to think about automatic promotion so it may just be thru the playoffs. Whether my squad is good enough to cope with promotion at the first time of asking only time will tell but considering most of my monkeys didnt know what a cricket bat was 7 weeks ago we've not done too badly in our first season.

As i'm still not sure how all the friendlies works in tiring out players and making them lose form i have to admit to fielding weakened teams in the blonde cup as the league is taking priority, hopefully soon though i will have a good enough squad to rotate 5 or 6 players for each cup game and give my more "senior" monkeys sundays off!! Playing a game - be it friendly or league - is meant to give a higher chance of form improving. A friendly has much lower effect on fitness levels than a league match.

Even playing both games in the week the only player I have any trouble with PFL is a guy with feeble stamina who is on 3 nets - it's hard to get him to sublime at the minute, should change as his stamina improves though.

I'm still tinkering with my squad though and finding out which players are best where - for games 5 and 6 in the league i'd been playing a player as a batsman coming in at number 4, realized he's not bad in the bowling department as well and so for this game switched him to number 7 as my tail had been hopeless for the last few weeks. He didn't get much chance to bat following the maiden centuries for two of my other players but returned figures of 3-18 with the ball. I'm using the friendlies as an excuse to try my squad players out in different places to see who is better where so that hopefully i can get a decent squad together should i win promotion.

Does the hiring and firing of coaches cost money? I keep changing my mind about who i want to give priority to in the nets during the week so that come sunday i've been hiring and firing to get my nets sorted how i think best for the monday. Just thought though that it could be costing me to keep doing so!!

you have to pay an extra weeks wages if you sack them.

Most economical way is to sack post Monday training and then hire after the financial updates on Saturday as then you won't pay the new coach for doing nothing in the first week (saving £1500).

Well my game today was certainly the closest... I was on GFI... am pretty sure they were too

Batted 1st and made 293-8 with my no 3 ( whom I've played in 5 positions this season in 5 weeks) finally getting a knock of 93

My short notice opening replacement managed to knock a 50, and as usual my no 5 and 6 scored very quick 30s

In reply I have them 18-2 quite early, with my strike bowler getting them both.

They then put on 2 huge partnerships, with their opener scoring 144 no from just 121 deliveries

Luckily for me his no scored 77 from 127 deliveries Smiley

And he finished on 289-3.. meaning a 4 run win Smiley YYYAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
