would you lend/borrow money?

To a friend or associate with regards to gambling!!!!!
The reason i ask this is I have just read a blog on the web of a Young man, whom i have had the pleasure of playing against many times online, and have also met 2 or 3 times at live events.
The young man in question is a very pleasant guy (the sort who wouldnt make enemies), and has won a GREAT deal of money online due to his tournament play:
Without going into to much details, he helped out somebody that was known to him, on more than occasion, therefore putting more pressure on himself to do well, and ultimately went bust.
I actually found this quite upsetting and disturbing as i know this guy (always different when you read about someone you dont know).
He is the first to admit he is a gambler (it wasnt poker where he lost his money):
Young, Naive, Gullible, Stupid? Maybe yes maybe no. He has started a slow comeback and I am sure he has it within him to regain his bankroll again. I wish him well.
Just wondered what other people would do in the same situation.
His blog is obviously there for all to see, and I admire him for going public (time and time again we only here of people when they win!!!!)
I havent mentioned his name as i dont feel its my place to do so.

I'm not quite sure what the dilemma is - so forgive me if I've misunderstood. Are you saying that you are considering lending him money to help rebuild his bankroll? If so, that would all depend on how well you know the guy, and how much you trust him. I'm not in a position to be lending money, but if I was I don't think I would in this situation - if the guy's skint I think I'd suggest he get a 'regular' job for the time being and use the money from that to build a bankroll.

I don't lend money for someone else to gamble with. I also don't borrow money for gambling...it's a slippery slope.
I do understand staking someone though and have no problem with that.

No dilemma. I just wondered what other people would do in his position. No i am not lending him money, as someone just said, neither a lender or borrower be.

ah i see - I thought you were asking what other people would do in your position. I'm still not sure I understand his position (i.e. choices) though? I guess it would be clearer if I read his blog!

sorry. maybe i didnt make things clear, and yes it would be easier if you read the blog, but as i say, i am not going to say who it is.
My question was what would other people have done in HIS position. He has since gone back to work, and from his blog he is obviously starting back very slowly.

Fair enough, bloggers hate having their site advertised, just ask Mark.

To be honest it completely depends on who it is. If a good friend of mine who also plays poker asks me to buy him in to a tourney or lend him some money to do so as he is waiting for some money to come in or had a rough ride I will do so. I won't lend someone money to put spend on roulette though.

Young guy who plays good poker lends some money to another and therefore this other guy loses most of his bankroll?
1. don';t lend what you can't afford to lose
2. don't lend people who are unlikely to give you back what they borrowed
If someone borrows from you money and fails to return it - do not lend them more, rent some huge blokes for a day, turn up at his/her doorstep and get back what is yours. ( presuming that the amount is high enough to cover the costs of debt recovery;)
Be aware though of people who will ask you to lend them small sums and return them on time, and then suddenly ask for a bigger sum... it is one of a con artists specials - build up a trust and then clean up.

I will lend money to only a very select few people, i am in the camp of never borrow never loan but i do break the rule. I have to have complete faith in the person paying me back, its hard to be sure but on the circuit there are a few people like this. I have yet to be out of pocket. Of course i would never be out of pocket if i never leant but last week for example a friend was getting screwed over in a cash game so i lent him some money, he then went on to win back all he had lost, so yeah i made no gain, and i did i suppose technically risk some money (although not really with the guy) but i helped him out by keeping him in a very soft game which he then won money in! That's what its all about!
Oh and never borrow money of someone who you wouldn't lend too, a key rule!
