I've been playing in a pub league for the last couple of weeks and having a mighty fine time at it too.  A rather odd rule came into play last night that I've never heard of before, just wondered if it really is odd or, for want of a better word, 'standard'.

The rule applied is that when a shortstack has less than 1bb, but more than 0.5bb they can pick up the equivalent of 1bb from every player that enters a pot with them.  For example, blinds are 1000/2000.  Mateyboy is UTG with a single 1000 chip and goes all in.  Two callers, small blind makes up and big blind checks.  The whole 9000 goes into a side pot which mateyboy can pick up if he wins.

Huh?

Why is the shortstack not in the car park?

The very last hand of the night goes to Dewi James, who finds ACES and talks Raymond O’Mahoney into calling his all-in preflop bet of 15k.  “If I had AQ, I’d call!” says Dewi.  Raymond calls holding pocket 66’s.

Makes it easier for the organisers at the expense of the players.

In poker terms, that's just about the daftest thing I've ever heard! Free gifts for shortstacks!

That's kind of what I thought.  I queried it at the time and was told it was all there in the rules which are being applied league-wide.  Having just read them, I think it's a misinterpretation of the under-raise rule.  I've just queried it on their own forum (that'll be a popular first post  Roll Eyes).

Rules is rules, it's very odd, but the same for everyone in the comp I suppose.

When involved in a pot, be less inclined to make those value bet your last 0.5BB with less than the nuts is all I can suggest.

Oooh, do link us up.

We'll all piley on and politely explain just how goddamn wrong they are. Safety in numbers.

How they are rewarding the TAGs with this misinterpreatation, so less chance of a good quality LAG coming out of their league and winning WSOP, bringing glory to league by proxy. The TAGs they cultivate and send out into the pokersphere will bring nothing but disdain on their house, no major tournament victories, no glory for the league.

On second thoughts, link everyone else up, just not me.

Had a couple of replies on the forum and it looks like a misinterpretation of the rules at the venue I played at.  At least it's out there now and hopefully corrective action can be taken to make sure it doesn't happen again!!
