Mayweather v De La Hoya
«
on:

Any thoughts?
Will this be the big boost for boxing they are all hoping for?
Has boxing killed itself by spreading to thin?
I can't really see this going the distance?

It's going to be a cracking spectacle - hopefully the fight is too.

Too many organisations, too many world champions. Not enough superfights (the fighters are there, they're just with different promoters/organisations).

Not sure really. Depends how they come out to fight. De La Hoya will want to get in close and tie Mayweather up. Mayweather might opt to try and box at distance. Mayweather must be a decent favourite, so it's worth a punt on De La Hoya.

I think this will be a bit of an anti-climax. I see Mayweather taking a cautious approach and using his skills to take a comfortable points win. It definbetly won't be a toe to toe scrap. DLH does have the edge in power though and will be naturally stronger at the weight having fought at 154 since 2001 whereas PBF is making the step up for the 1st time (and has looked less effective each time he has stepped up a weight), so he is not without a chance.

I will be shouting my lungs out for De la Hoya. as a MMA fan I've been annoyed by Mayweathers disrespectful comments towards the sport and it's athletes. He's been offered $1M of the UFC presidents own money to fight Chuck Liddell but he'd never do it.
De La Hoya however, trains with and promoted MMA fighters and is highly respectful of the sport.

Mayweather shows little respect for anyone. That is why he is generally disliked. Of course, as a boxer he is world class.

I want De La Hoya to win, I have always liked him. But I feel this may be a step too far and he will get beaten. Hopefully I am wrong though, I will be supporting de la hoya for sure

Just seen some clips of last nights weigh in - PBF looks pensive, almost nervous then the bravado kicked in and all looked fine. But with Hagler et al all running on about fights being won in the build up I do wonder - I can't think of a fight that PBF has ever gone into before where he could have ever faced self doubt, he has always had ultimate belief in his ability, and believed he was far superior to his opponents, maybe this one is different.
Can't wait for this fight for me I want Oscar to win, but it will be a cracker, don't expect Oscar to chase him round the ring, try and draw him into a slug fest and let his size and power tell. I am always nervous for boxers stepping up, but I guess PBF is no ordinary boxer. Too close to call but I will go Oscar - but a fine battle it will be.
Still can't get my around Sky giving this away for free (well ish).

Bear in mind that, as part of the endless promotion for this fight, the fighters have happily played up to their good guy/bad guy stereotypes. Every time Mayweather mouths off about something, it makes the TV news, and more people signup to watch the fight.

I agree about the build-up - it's just pantomime. I was talking about Mayweather in general though, he's just an unpleasant individual. Brilliantly talented boxer, just don't like him as a person.
