A few of my favorites:

The Talented Mr. Ripley (drama)
A Beautiful Mind (drama)
La vita e bella / Life is beautiful (drama - must see)
Dead poet society (drama)
Waiting (comedy)
The usual suspects (crime, suspense, drama)
The Pianist (drama)
Stalker (drama/scifi/thriller/goofy)
Finding Neverland (drama)
The Straight Story (drama)

I'll leave it to you to imdb them if you need more info Smiley

My girlfriend is a member of a DVD club but is appalling at choosing good films- this has just culminated in the ridiculous " Children of men" being watched in about 25 mins in fast speed. I would like some recommendations for films to get sent. preferably not action films but ones with a good story, or good comedy ones.

I liked children of men, i just wish they had explored the concept more than they did.

For a scary movie,  you have to get ' The Woman in Black'.  It is a fairly old movie from about 15 years ago.  I have seen it advertised on a few DVD sites and one day I will rent it again.   I never find horror movies frightening,  but this movie is a real heart stopper

Here is the wikipedia page

I agree but if you see the West End theatre version of the show, it's even more scary!

La vita e bella / Life is beautiful (drama - must see)

I know it is a bit pretentious recommending foreign language films but I would echo this one.  Without a doubt in my Top 3.

Just to prove this bucks the trend though, 'Big' with Tom Hanks in right up there too.

There are some great foreign language films out there - I'm a fan of asian films, these are all very accessible:

Farewell My Concubine
2046
Kung-fu Hustle
Chungking Express
Hana-bi
Battle Royale
Hard Boiled
Ring
Spirited Away

And of course Crouching Tiger...

Maybe subtitles are akin to on-screen displays of hole cards in TV poker programmes: useful, superfluous, a minor irritation, or vital to the plot according to your viewpoint.

Foreign language films can be a refreshing change from McHollywood fare: they are more than cultural marmite.

Kung Fu Hustle was totally hilarious, I really loved that film.
Battle Royale was just...mental.

Also liked: 'Man Bites Dog' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkieE6MKdY0 CAUTION GRAPHIC VIOLENCE) but pretty funny
