I saw the thread and was just gonna pot audi, they dont rust, ultra reliable and people dont hate you when you undertake them on the motorway!!!

BUT i see petrol consumption is a priority. I dont know how much much a turbo diesel Audi A3 would be but will look now!

My 1.8 Audi A4 SE was 135K when i bought it, and i bet i can outdo most cars and will run until i tire of it!

well im looking for a new car too now, some prick smashed into me on thursday and have just heard from insurance that it is written off.

I had a peugeot 306 1.9 TD meridian -  great car, alloys, leather seats, air con etc, no problems, had only done 46k miles, 50MPG+  that was £3000 about 9 months ago. 

The newer 306 Hdi models have even better consumption. My Dads last peugeot diesel has done over 180k miles with no major problems at all

HDi is meant to be an excellent engine.
Older peugeots only get 3/5 for reliabilty as they work for 100K or so then everything goes wrong with them!

Happened to my mums car and is starting to happen to the missus'! Both 306's.

My mate is selling his evo 6, i so badly wanna buy it off him as suprisingly petrol consumption off boost is about the same as my audi!

Hmm ... Had a similar problem myself... Saab 95 drank petrol .. lovely lovely car but fuel bill just crippling... Soloution sell the Saab ..

Now we own a Citroen ... Cheaper Road Tax.. Cheaper Insurance ... and yes the fuel bill is now incredible ... superb saving .... looks naff but its quirky enough ...dont know if i would want to travel long distances regularly....

Recently put my 02 plate rover 45 through MOT got warnings of both driver and passenger floors rotting through(5 year old car 20,000 miles) also mystery problem with ABS which activates even when slowing down from 10 MPH and i mean slowing. Sure you'll have better luck.

26 MPG ?? thats pure luxury I tell ya....

Try doing 25K miles per year in a 4litre v8 jag. Average of 19MPG. Around town, this would go down to under 10mpg.

But put yer foot down on the motorway, and it felt like a jumbo jet going along the runway.

Now sadly gone, replaced by a Merc Eclass  Diesel. 40mpg and does exactly what it says on the tin. Lacks a certain "character" though....
