Well I can't recommend them to anyone. Apparently - they don't tell you this when you buy them - you are supposed to check the tyres once a year. Ridiculous.

.

Now sadly gone, replaced by a Merc Eclass  Diesel. 40mpg and does exactly what it says on the tin. Lacks a certain "character" though....

When you've spent as much time lying on your back beneath a car as I have, you will take reliability over "character" every day.

Me too. After I'd been through just about every car there was, some really nice ones, too - I settled into Mercs about 12 years ago, had 4 of them over the next 11 years, & never once did any of them break down, fail to start, or let me down. A bit "dull" inside, but hey, handsome is as handsome does, sod all these kids with their spoliers & chrome exhausts, it just needs to get from A to B in comfort.

Then MPower talked me into a Beemer, but he never mentioned pumping up the tyres, & it cost me 4 new tyres, they were "a bit thin" on tread apparently. Seriously, I've done 39,000 miles in about 8 months in the Beemer, it gives me 44.1mpg, & never misses a beat. Gets dirty though, so I clean it every 6 months. Gotta look after these cars, see?

My criteria

It must be diesel

It must drive well and sound "nice"

It must be old enough to have taken it's first big blew (had it's major depreciation loss)

I prefer them with a nice big dent, or if they are recorded as damaged and repaired (deduct almost half from the asking price with no loss of useability)

If money were no object, I could still not bring myself to have a juce swallowing, pass anything but a garage type of car.

I have a Mazda RX8, a CLK coupe and an old 1997 XJ6. They're all great cars.

I'm driving quite a lot of miles at the moment and I'm seriously considering the new Honda Civic 2.2 Diesel - anyone got one ?

And.. can we do houses next ?
