John Flanagan has signed a new contract, delighted for him and he'll be one for the future for sure and a decent squad player for now.

Don't be down on Downing:

 http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2011/jul/08/stewart-downing-liverpool-steve-mcclaren

Funny how he finishes off comparing Downing to Ray Haughton in a role he could play on the right. We already have a Ray Haughton player in the form of Dirk Kuyt - except Kuyt scores more.

Wow, that might just be the worst and most poorly constructed article I have ever read. Not a single good reason to pay £20mill for Downing in that article.

New signings Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam have had their squad numbers confirmed.

Former Sunderland star Henderson will wear the No.14 shirt while Jay Spearing has agreed to hand over his No.26 jersey to midfielder Adam.

Spearing will now wear the No.20 shirt while Maxi Rodriguez has switched shirts from No.17 to No.11.

Don't mean to be disrespectful, but are you as fans enthused by the signings and the potential signings you are making?

Does it concern you that a man who failed miserably at Spurs (Commoli) is now in charge and responsible for the signings you make?

I mean well, I'd love nothing more than you lot to be competitive next year.

Comolli failed miserably at what?

The signings he made along with working alongside managers. Jol made his feelings publicly known and Ramos/Commoli failed miserably.

There was a reason he was sacked!

I'm not even sure as to the point of his role. Managers should be solely responsible for those coming in and coming out. Makes life easier for all concerned.

I'm not sure how Comolli failed miserably? I'm pretty sure the stats bear him out at both Arsenal and Spurs.

Also unless you have a world class manager the director of football route, for me, makes the most sense. (There is no way a DoF would allow a £30m Berba at 29, £30m Sheva at 30, £19m Robbie Keane at 29 etc if he's doing his job right) The DoF works well in every country at big clubs. We need to change an outdated mentality. It makes enormous sense for signings to be a consensus which can be vetoed by the manager.

Not every club can have a board that doesn't mind the odd £30m mistake like at Utd. I'm pretty sure the DoF is the future.

The DoF role is pretty essential in modern football I would say. A manager can identify the player or indeed the type of player he needs for the team and pass the complex task of acquiring said player to the DoF. A good DoF will be well connected to agents and understand how to get a deal done, be a skilled negotiator, and a talented businessman. Afterall these are multi-million pound investments on behalf of the club. There is no need for the manager to get involved if indeed he even has the skills to get involved. I think John Henry is a shrewd businessman and he's employing Comolli to make big decisions on his behalf so it's a safe bet Comolli knows the price of eggs.
