Whats the best thing to measure how far you have run?

I have a Garmin Forerunner GPS whatsit.  Got mine a few years ago (the 201), and since then they've brought out lots of new models.  Think they range from £60-odd quid to a few hundred for the top of the range newest one.

They're really good, as you know exactly how far you've run, and how long it took, and the pace you're running at (and have been running at).  There's no lying to yourself that you've run further than you actually have.  You can also download it all to your computer and you can have a record of all of your runs.  Also useful for pacing yourself in a race - so if you want to run a 1h 40m half-marathon, you can set it to tell you if you're going too fast or too slow (for that time the pace you'd be running would be 7m 38s a mile).

I don't know how anyone who runs a lot and trains for 10K+ races can do without one of these.

Just received confirmation that I've got a place in the London Marathon for next year because I've failed to get in via the ballot 5 years in a row.

I run bad, in both senses.

I seriously need to get back into a running regime.  It's so hard running in this weather though, even at 6am it's too warm.  I don't know how any of the marathon runners copes in Athens at the Olympics.  I know they're professionals, but I don't even want to walk anywhere in this heat and it was something like 38 degrees when they started the race in Athens.

It's so much easier to run in the winter.  Rain and snow are pleasant compared to heat.

You get 3 months more notice than those other 'lucky' ones that do get in on the ballot!! Any idea what %'age get in on the ballot?

I still don't have anything else lined up as a target to kick on after the 10k, doing a 5.5m fell run at the end of August but could do with a half marathon before the end of the year.

I had to wait 5 years!!

20% get in via the ballot.

Where do you live?  There are plenty of half-marathons knocking about.

Dan,

Just seen that you have an ITB problem. I had similar issue about four years ago. I took a 2 pronged attack on it (ok, so I didn't. The physio told me what to do):

1. Loads of stretching. I don't know if this is suck eggs or if you have already read up on this. There are a couple of specific stretches you can do for this injury. If you don't already know them then PM me. The ITB is effectively a large elastic band that needs to be kept stretched and supple...

2. I had accupuncture. Was very sceptical at first...but it has worked. I probably give this more credit than the stretching!!!!

How the devil are you?

You misread what I wrote.  I had and ITB problem, but changing my running technique solved the problem instantly.  I haven't had the problem since.  Thanks anyway thumbs up

Yeah I know you've done your time for your slot! Just that you have 3 months extra then the ballot winners to get ready for April!

I live in Leeds. I'll have to keep an eye out for one I fancy in runners world, end of October I think!

I actually knew I was in the marathon next year when I didn't get in via the ballot last year!  So I've had well over 12 months to prepare myself.  Not that I have though...

If you're planning to run London, you don't need to start your marathon training until December/January.  Up till then you just need to be running regularly and putting in the mileage.  So you'll know in plenty of time.  If you want a definite place, you can get a charity place - but you have to pledge to raise at least £1,500.  Chasing people for the money is harder than the training.
