TMS rules

problem i have is that i cant get radio 5 live extra in my bed

and they keep interupting the 4LW with shipping forcasts and womens hour

The shipping forecast is an integral part of TMS imo. I think they work quite well together as two very traditionally British things.

No excuses

Pick a venue, pick a date, book the time off and enjoy a Test Match.

The 2009 Ashes should be close and a great sporting event.

Get it sorted

http://theashes2009.net/?page_id=38

Might just do that. Gotta get my scorecard & pencil first, no good without that.

You can also take your own radio and headphones to listen to commentary at the ground as well

No that would not work for me. Radio Commentary, TV pictures, curtains closed, ftw. My eyes have become too bad to watch live cricket.

Happy memories! That was way before the dreadful Radio 5 Live was even thought of.

Why dont you like 5 live, its much better than talk sport imo

Oh absolutely, I don't deny that. But most things are, no?

Sport is extremely poorly served by Radio, imo - I guess because so many peeps have tellies now.

In my day.....

TMS is still a good listen imo, I can't say i really listen to any other sport on radio. Tbh i just think a lot of sports aren't suited to Radio, especially when compared to TV.

Well TMS is a given, far & away the best sport coverage on Radio OR TV by a mile. Particularly when it's raining, or they are covering a "dead" afternoon. It's gone a bit downhill since we lost E W Swanton, Johnners, Arlott, Grumpy Trevor Bailey, Trueman, Boycs, & Don Mosey (ex-Yorkshire, his son played for England & Dad commentated), Peter West & co.

I was never much keen on CMJ, or Blowers, but of the new breed, I think Aggers is perfect.

Bumble was superb, ditto Vic Marks, but I thought Tuffnell was a complete waste of space. Took drugs, see?

I'd have to nominate.....

Best Summariser.....Trevor Bailey. So mardy, but knew what was what.

Best commentator....Arlott. Different class.

Best Match Coverage ever ever ever - England v Aussies, the Headingley Test. Of course.

Too young to remember some of the above, just about old enough to remember Brain Johnston.

Of the current crop, I agree Aggers is perfect for the role. I also agree with Tufnell and nothing to do with his track record, his whole personality didn't seem to fit the atmsophere of TMS.

Geoff Boycott amuses me, isn't scared to say what he thinks and works well as a contrast to some of the other commentators. Bumble is a complete legend and is the only person I turn off TMS to listen to his stints on sky.

Good analysis, spot on.

Tikay, what did you think of our table last night? I thought it was great & enjoyed it for the first time in a while, even tightyrock & pelhamrock managed to find a 3bet with a bag of spanners. Oh and that bloke calling you on the flop with nowt and shoving the river, you didn't seem impressed at the time. I thought it was quite a clever play. Your thoughts?

Absolutely.

Do you know how the Shipping Forecasts work? I think they work round the British Isles clockwise, & generally say "precipitation" rather than "rain", no idea why.

Wind is expressed in "Force" & description.

Gale Force 8

Severe Gale 9

Storm Force 10

Severe Storm 11

Hurricane, 12

"Imminent" means soon, "soon" is up to 12 hours (!), & "later" is beyond 12 hours.

A change of direction in the wind is either "veering" (clockwise) or "backing" (anti-clockise). Just found out about that on Wikipidea.

The Forecast is broadcast in almost Reeth-esque tone - simply wonderful.

It's just "Sailing by" that gets right on my tits.

Tikay, in your experience, has anybody ever won the Velocity and £400 guaranteed on the same night? And do you think such a feat is possible?

Groan. Say it ain't so. Please?

Nice little fun comp by all accounts, that £400 Guaranteed. The Deepstack is now £500 Guaranteed, by the way. It's over within 5 hours......

Mini-View Tables arrive in a few weeks.

I was not sure if it was a great play, or a bad player not really having a clue what he was doing. He got me off the winner though. Not hard, that. Or maybe he'd targeted the mug.

I watched him carefully after that, & saw no signs of flair, solidness, timing, positional awareness, nothing. So he'll do well.

Seriously, I think he'd struggle desperately at the sharp end. Nice enough geezer though.

What happened to positional awareness? It seems to have disappeared from everyone's armoury.

Nah, he wasn't a great player and his reasoning behind the play confirmed he didn't really know what he was doing, other than that it was good fun. Had a hand at least 5% of the raises i made so please don't think i was at it all the time. Wink

Jeez, what a day. There's always an aftermath to a major "ban", & the PM's & e-Mails came in thick & fast.

It was my call to make Members aware, it's just better that way. I thought the Thread went ok-ish. I really don't think anyone should diss ITB now he's not here, (& thus cannot defend himself) that's out of order really, so the sooner the thread goes cold, the better.

The day started bad, got better, & ended bad, this place drives me nuts at times.

But it has it's ups, too. I looked, for the first time ever, at "RSQ" tonight. The Thread was heaving, no angst, just a whole lot of folks having some fun. Exactly what the Forum was designed to do.

Down to London first thing in morning.  A bunch of work to do getting the "In-Poker" schedule updated, it's very time-consuming, but satisfying, too. Then the Live Show with Rich Orford. He came to Luton last night, & the atmo there last night was perfect, just peeps playing poker, laughing & smiling, I coulda stayed there all night. A grand bunch down there, in the main.

Saturday I drive across from Feltham to Southend, in readiness for Sunday's In-Poker. I might even play the Event - I need to ask the Suits first though. A lot of pros & cons to that call.

Stay in Southend (a Hotel right by Southend Airport, lovely) on Sunday night, then across to Feltham on Monday, for Blog day, I am doing 3 Blogs per week right now. Sometimes the words flow, sometimes they do not.
