I wish I hadn't started thinking about this, things keep popping into my head now

charles and di's wedding was such a huge news item. the whole country just went irrationally mental for a few weeks. my normally sane parents camped out on the street the night before and made friends with a couple of punks with massive mohicans who were sharing the same bit of pavement

and then torville and dean's bolero in sarajevo. went way beyond the boudries of sport and into the public conscience

I think "Sport" stories are worth their own List.

Off you go, get us started.....

Someone mention sport!

Ok these will be post 1985 as my sporting interest only really started at about 5 or 6.

2005 Ashes

Hand of God and Maradona's amazing 2nd, 1986 world cup.

England vs West Germany semi final 1990.

Senna's death.

Tyson getting knocked out by Buster Douglas

Shane Warne bowling Mike Gatting, 93' Ashes, I was there.

Davis vs Taylor world championship snooker final.

Ben Johnson 1988 100m final and the aftermath.

2005 European cup final Liverpool's comeback vs AC Milan

Monica Seles stabbing.

Meh i know i will think of some better ones in a minute.

I was only 4 when Patty Hearst hit the big time headlines.  She went from proper posh chick who was kidnapped, to bank robber with her 'kidnappers'.  But good old Jimmy Carter.  While he couldn't sort release of a bucketload of hostages, he thought it was a great idea to let the posh tart out of jail early.  Clinton pardoned her when he was President.  He always was partial to the women.  Sigh.

Was just reading up on the "Fat Man" Bomb, I didn't realise that America has "Lost" 60 nuclear weapons? I know they are a bit backward when it comes to war (friendly fire etc) but lost nuclear bombs?

They tested a lot of those "Fat Man's" in the Neveda Desert - "Area 51" - quite close to Las Vegas. The area remains off limits.

thats cos of the aliens.

wasnt there somewhere else in the pacific (bikini atoll???) that the usa nuked to bits, still not safe for human visit decades later

THAT'S the one!  I couldn't remember the name and you put this girl out of her misery.  Cheers!

Pretty basic website, but here ya go  http://www.bikiniatoll.com/  They're owed a fortune by the US government and will never see it.  Mark my words.  Sometimes I'm fierce proud of where I come from...this is definitely not one of those times.

Dunblane was a chiller...and Andrew Murray surviving to become britains best tennis player since Fred Perry... British Tennis history held in the balance by a madmans aim...

I just remembered another, reminded by Donk's Concorde Post - Lockerbie.

I was in Kenya when that went down, & I'd flown there on a "Safari Airways" 707, painted in zebra-esque stripes, ffs.

On the way back, it had to land at Basle, technical problems, & I got rubber-gloved by Customs, after I'd said my Ciggies were within EEC allowance. It would seem Switzerland was not in the EEC though, my bad.

The Lockerbie thing really scared me, to be honest.

I went & visited Lockerbie recently - very non-descript, not at all what I had expected, & it's in that very bland part of Scotland.

I've not seen Lockerbie mentioned. Might've just missed it I suppose.

Definitely one of the biggies for me.

Probably already mentioned, but the end of apartheid in South Africa, and more specifically, the release of Nelson Mandela.

That was a big one to me, a few more minutes and we were in the flight path. My cousin is married to a policeman & he's still haunted by what he saw there.

What about Scotchland going two down to the Faroe Islands and the Sky panel struggling not to laugh?

Sutcliffe was mentioned, but have the Moors Murderers and Harold Shipman appeared on anyone's lists?
