Summary:

Alliss' commentary would be improved by him sitting on a vuvuzela and wearing a burka.

The vuvuzelas apparently sound a lot better in real life than they do on the telly.

Burkas look the same in real life as they do on the telly.

Tikay can't moan about clutter on his diary. We're just killing time until he comes back and tells us why things are going to get messy. I hate it when he leaves us hanging like that.

Should be allowed to play one, only if you can do this:

Not sure whether he'd manage that wearing a burka though

I love Peter Aliss, he is one of those rare sports comms that doesnt just suck up to the participants and isnt afraid to give em stick. Tho I admit his namechecks of old Archie who is 85 today are a little annoying.

My fav Alliss line has to be' I was watching Countdown the other day and Carol Vorderman was on and I have to admit I got aroused. Which is a pretty good seven letter word at my age'

great quote -  I love Alliss. It's a few years back but his commentary on the Van De Velde was brilliant. How many other commentators would have said "someone go down there and give him a stiff drink"?  I think his namechecks are great - it personalises the commentary without alienating the viewers - saying hello to some old captain at some club doesn't upset me at all. He is old school but I think we like that in the UK, a bit like Johnners was on the cricket.

The other plus side of the BBC golf team is Ken Brown. I've had the pleasure of working with Ken on Sky's golf in the late 90s & he is a great character. The BBC use him so well on the course.

Alliss used to be one of my favourite commentators.

He brought life and colour to the game at a time when most commentators were dull as ditchwater.

But in the last 5 years he's become a bigoted old fool who talks such rubbish I can hardly bear to watch golf on bbc.

He should have retired at 70 imo.

Do you remember the classic film' The Wicker man' from the 70's Tony?

Edward Woodward plays a police officer that goes to a remote Scottish Island to search for a missing girl and finds that a religious cult are planning to sacrifice her and it becomes a race against time to find her before the kill her.It ends up with a superb twist in that he is the person they want to sacrifice and he has been lulled there with the sole aim of killing him instead of the girl because they know his morals and beliefs will make him strong enough to try to do the right thing.

I saw this article today about a remote Scottish island view on the Sabbath and it made me think how we have gone full circle in thinking,as it's not so long ago that Sunday was a day of worship and rest, with services not available because it was a protected day.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/aug/01/golfers-sabbath-ban-stornoway

The view expressed by 'the lords observance society' in that article now seem as obscure to most people as the religious cult's beliefs in the Wicker Man but it can only be 20 years since they were the norm almost everywhere.
