I wes told that they were recently "granted a licence by the Local Authority". I have no idea, though, what that means.

for a private members club for a range of games that happen to include poker (Chess, bridge, fishing etc!)....ie not the casino licence required by dtd and involving the GC

This seems like an interesting comment. Can you elaborate further?

A working mans club, can apply for a gaming permit, which derestricts any limits on Poker and also allows them to hold bank games such as chemis de far, I am not sure if this is what they are referring to when they say they have been granted a licence? This is only if other activities are more predominant....hence fishing club. They are also allowed to take reg fees without limits, which is not the same as snooker clubs or working mans clubs without permits.

Thanks Rich, & good to meet up with you at last down at DTD.

So, "other acrivities are more predominant".

Meaning, if I get you right, that as long as Gutshot or The Western's "Fishing Section" is the "predominate" activity, they can lay whatever poker they like?

Tell me it ain't so.......

It's THAT easy to circumvent?

I think it was one of the stipulations of the applicant along with other stuff that I am not to clear about, but yes. Still needs to be granted by local authority.

I heard you were at the Virgin Fessie, as was I, but as we've never met before, & were not introduced, I never realised that. It was not intentional, please rest assured.

The trout picture was from today's Daily Telegraph, by the way. The story is here....(The trout are escaping from a trout farm!)

... my guess is they flaunt the rules as much as they can then deal with the consequences whenever they may come calling.
...

This would be my guess as well, they're doing enough so that it would be a hassle to prosecute them rather than a clear cut case, but if the will was there to do it then they could be.

I wes told that they were recently "granted a licence by the Local Authority". I have no idea, though, what that means.

I'm not anti The Western, not at all, but this whole "licensing" thing baffles me. In simple terms, why did Rob have to go through so much (aggro, stress & cash) whereas others don't?

I hope The Western continues to flourish, I really do, but I'm totally bamboozled as to it's legality. They have a £750 Tourney (which looks excellent) in December, so it's hardly "small-stakes poker".

totally agree tony the western is a fabulous place to play and seems to be well run and flourishing.
its the law thats wrong and hopefully the sucess of dtd will improve the chances of other poker only clubs opening in the future.( this will take time and another law change i know but we can hope)

I can't comment on how other venues operate without a casino licence, all I can say is that:

1. When dtd got delayed there was noway i could have opened before I went back to court 9 months later, it was costing me over £80k per month to be closed so believe me, if I could, I would of opened the doors after the adjournement.

2. If dtd did not get its licence in September, I would have never opened the club, there was no way I could have done this without being closed down. I would have probabaly kept the venue and changed it into a Nightclub, seriously.

As far as I know, there are no grey areas in the law, or I would have been able to use them, in fact, I am absolutley sure that the casinos legal teams would have indicated that we did not need a full casino licence to operate a poker club - then they would not have been worried about dtd falling into someone else's hands and the casino games being introduced - an alternative solution to the casino licence would have been a win win for all of us.

Today I drove 35 miles an hour in a 30 zone (i personally think it should be a 40), I did not get a ticket, but I still broke the law, knowingly so. However, I did no real halm to the public and accept that one day I may get a ticket for doing this, that about sums up where I think things are at.

Cheers Rob

My local pool club is privately owned, no committee, and they run whatever poker they like, tourneys and raked cash games with no limits in place whatsoever. They even have a hugh sign in the window advertising their weekly £50 and £100 freezeouts.
