'Groups' are a pain in the backside.  You're auto added if one of the organisers decides to do so.  You can opt to 'leave group'.  But if you choose that option it becomes 'closed' to you and you can't keep on top of it.  Tough call and bites either way.

Kylie, Liz, ABBA, Liza Minnelli, (yes, I knew of her Mum!, & I even saw Liza in "Cabaret).

I'm sorry, you might have to spell this out, though not too graphically please.

They are "gay icons" because........

Most are considered icons because they support the gay community.  Could be wrong, but pretty sure ABBA was mostly down to their song 'Dancing Queen'.  Pink is one of the latest according to my 13 year old daughter Sarah.  Yer not the only 'old' one 'round here.

In the name-dropping department, I bumped into Helen Chamberlain on Friday, & we nattered for a bit. I was trying to bend the convo to the upcoming Live Cash Game, but she told me she's quit poker now. Bugger.

Anyway, it seems she has been at SKY with Soccer AM for seventeen years. I could barely believe that, but could hardly call her a liar. So I asked a bunch of peeps, including the worldly wise & the geeky, at Luton the other night, & on last night's Show, & the average answer was 11 years.

17 years!

She still cuts it, too, & works incredibly hard. She must be worth an absolute fortune. Well done her. She still has the figure of a teenager, too.

I had a bit of a shock when I google-imaged her, though. Somehow not quite what I expected. Not easy to select the sort of photo I wanted, this was the best I could do. Someone will tell me she's a gay icon next, I suppose. I'm so out of touch, thank God.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_icon

The following line seems to sum it up although I think that you can skip androgyny for Kylie.

Qualities of a gay icon often include glamour, flamboyance, strength through adversity, and androgyny in presentation.

So if they "support" gay people, & are famous, they become gay icons?

Pink, I can sort of understand that. The clue is in the name. I rather like her actually, she seems refreshingly different.

Ahh, I see. So I could be a gay icon then, yes?

They do.  But not sure they qualify him.

It must be the androgyny thing.

Mere's link kind of confirms something I was already thinking...ABBA isn't mentioned.  Must ask one of my gay friends to confirm, but reckon ABBA was something the 'straight' community came up with.  And I fell for it considering my earlier reply.

Extracts from Paul Merson's new book, "How Not to Be A Professional Footballer" must shock even those who were aware of his wayward tendancies. How good could he have been were it not for those demons?

At one stage, Middlesborough FC fully approved of he & Gazza sharing a flat. Wow.

Leaving aside alcohol & cocaine, he wagered & lost every penny he earned. So he cashed in his PFA pension - £800,000 - & blew the lot in weeks, too.

Sent to a Rehab clinic in the USA for a month, they told him, "you need to stay here for 9 months, you are the worst patholigical gambler we've ever seen".

Now he's sort of straightened himself up a bit - from what I can see - & adores his work at Sky Sports, & attacks it with gusto & verve.

Amazing stuff, & I hope he hangs in there. I think.

Do Chompy, Vinni, & Sicilian count? Sicilian does seem to have "leanings", I confess.

I remember when Merson went to Middlesborough and Big Ron quipped

"He'll be alright as long as they don't sign a couple of Columbians"

Ian Wright is a bit of a gay icon too, as is Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz" or the actress who played her.

Need to cool off before I Diary in detail yesterday's extraordinary media storm I became embroiled in. Social media storm, that is. It stole my entire day.

I really don't know how this Facebook thing works. A "Protest" Page was started, and it was a delicate matter, where I sort of knew - & understood from an insider's position - both sides, but it needed handling discretely.

Somehow, without my knowledge or approval, I was added to the Group, by a friend.

How can that be right?

Someone starts a FB protest page, say, "blondepoker is shite", or "I admire Charlie Sheen", "I support the idiots smashing up London during protest marches", "Rooney is a twat" or whatever, & I become a member of that "Group", without my approval or prior knowledge?

That's just wrong.

I hate all these Online rent-a-mobs, attracting as they do all the reprobates & extremists, & I refuse to be part of them. I have feelings as strong as anyone on this & that, but I'll tread my own path tyvm, let the sheep do their own stunted thinking. If they were but able.

Can't complain, I suppose, for business reasons I choose to use Facebook, so I guess I have to like it or lump it. Guess I have some decisions to make, as ultimately, we are all responsible for our own lives. Those of us that enjoy the luxury of independent thought, anyway.

When people get in a group, they behave so different.

Now, Kylie Minogue.......

I don't know why you give so much weight to opinions through mediums like facebook protest groups. A lot of people don't post after serious contemplation or think about the implications of their words. Their agenda is prob be to make mischief or to have a laugh. People say things are shite or someone is a twat at the drop of a hat these days. People say these things and forget them instantly because there's no substance behind it. If you dwell on the reasoning it's disproportional because there isn't much reasoning behind sitting in your bedroom and calling somebody you don't know on the interweb a gaylord. Giving your considered opinions on matters is the best response imo.

btw if you can wear a feather boa with credibility you are a gay icon.

I read a piece about a guy called Bill Liao, an Australian entrepenaur.

He's become a philanthropist, too.

Big into saving the planet, & his thing is trees, planting trees. To save the planet, apparently. He's a big part of "WeForest". See http://www.weforest.org/home.html

WeForest reckon if we plant enough trees, it would create rain clouds & that would slow down global warming. GL with that.

The target is 2,000 billion trees planted - yes, 2,000 billion, or 2 trillion if you prefer. By 2020.

Some of what he says is crazy, but you get the drift.

"If Coca Cola planted a tree for every can of coke they sold, the planet would be re-forested within 3 years". Well yes, but......think it might help to keep a sense of proportion.

But then he hits you with a corking Marketing phrase, aimed at big Corporations, unforgettable, winna winna.

"Buy two, get one tree".

Now that's clever.
