I reported the comment to facebook. Blatant racism and disgusting, even if it was fuelled by drink or whatever, that being this individual's modus operandi going back 5 or 6 years.

However I have reported stuff to facebook before and never had a single response from them, so I've no idea if it is worth anything.

facebook is these days no better than an unmoderated outpouring of bile, from so many quarters. much more than it was say six months or so ago. Big football nights are the worst, or late weekend nights

I would like to discuss this, not argue, but how do you view MANTIS well-reasoned view, that "it's just a comment", then?

I appreciated his reply, & don't want to diss him at all, & I have to say that maybe Neil knows me better, but I thought that Neil absolutely nailed it.

I wish this convo was about others, & I was an impartial observer, because it fascinates so.

I suppose, broadly, it breaks into an age gap, or generation, thing.

Personally, I don't take the view that something so nasty is "just a comment". I don't think I get as down as you about it though, but I would classify us both on the sensitive side as per our feelings when these sort of incidences occur. Idiots will be idiots whatever platform they post on

I think I must defend myself there, though - it's hard for me to be objective when they have insulted Tom so. You must understand that?

And no, Tom does not need my help to deal with it, hell no.

No need to defend yourself. I wasn't saying being senstive or getting down about it is wrong. the trick is to not be too down about it for too long though, as Mantis suggests above..that way you are letting yourself be got at.

Life's too short to get het up by internet keyboard warriors.

Agreed, Simon. But if we all turn the other cheek, where does that lead us?

Someone once said All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

Do we look the other way forever, & allow such views to gain currency?

Certainly wouldn't turn the other cheek but revenge is a dish best served cold isn't it?

Can I ask who was the persons blonde username who made this comment? I would be the same as you, disappointing that no one pulled him up over their remark, just delete them from FB and the people with no spine to say owt on his and your friends list.

Let me dwell on that one, please, I don't want to fuel the flames more than I already have. He is not a FB friend of mine, though, it came up on someone else's FB page.

I view fb as being far removed from real life.
IRL most sensible people would never ignore / let pass a comment such as the one under discussion.

What kind of fuckery is this?

It's similar to the Andy Gray/Richard Keys comments. They were just comments made by a couple of middle-aged footy pundits thinking they were funny guys. But everyone made a drama out of it and branded them sexists. I think the reality is both men prob adore women and I would even bet both wives wear the trousers in the relationships. It's just a comment. Now if you look at the lack of gender parity in the sky boardroom you will see where the real issues of sexism lie. That's the sort of thing people should worry about. The serious stuff. Not keys saying smash it. It's just a comment.

I don't agree with much of that, but no matter, not gonna get into that, but on my "to Diary" list was a chance personal encounter last week with Charlotte Jackson. More of which as soon as I get to it......

Well in real life they would not have the guts to say it, & certainly not to Tom's face.

I guess that sums it up really.

I'm still a mite surprised that several mutual acquaintances who saw it said nothing though, on blonde arguments & rucks start over nothing, but nobody said a peep on the FB page. Maybe they all agreed, or are scared to lose face in front of their mates. GG me on that!

Let's move on, I've said my piece. Your input was much appreciated, though.

I need to "adjust" I suppose. There are deep-rooted reasons for my sensitivity, I won't bore you with them, but I need to try & address it.

def don't think you need to adjust at all.  When racist/sectarian etc internet abuse goes unchallenged those making the comments feel that their attitude is acceptable.  Eventually one of the sad cowardly pos decides to send out letter bombs. At least the police have now decided to take some action.

I've avoided, largely, having any kind of disagreement on fb, chat boxes, forums etc..., and I hate the thought of changing that.
Quite often I will see something I disagree with and my immediate reaction is to respond.
Almost always I don't... because I know it will end in an argument, or abuse etc....
In some instances I probably should respond.... such as the fb one...... but I probably will carry on resisting. My bad. Probably.

Pretty much this for me. If i'm involved in heated 'debate' in certain topics i'll stop posting.
I often don't bother posting in some topics as you can see where it's heading and I can't be fkd to get involved

You definitely don't look the other way imo. Saying nothing often appears to be tacit consent, like if you're in the pub with a group of lads and one comes out with a racist, bigoted comment - it's not enough to just laugh nervously as part of the group.

If no one says anything then the comments could be considered acceptable and the norm within the group. It's not always right to make a huge scene of course, but saying something like "when's your next BNP meeting?" or similar can get the point across that what they've said isn't right.

To use another quote:
"Tolerance of intolerance is cowardice." Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

Not stirring the pot, but maybe the Raj incident and the Tom incident considered together might help you fathom how you tick?

An almighty row kicked off about that guy, who has a dreadful attitude. Raj had to leave the Table. He should be banned, effing & blinding at Raj.

Nobody else seems bothered, but I think they are - they just don't want to put their head above the parapet.

I just needed to say what I thought, & as I freely noted, maybe I am looking at it wrong. I generally mull over these things for a few days, in peace & quiet, & the right answer just slowly forms in my mind. This time, I felt the need to comment.

I think your differences of opinion suggest that you have a partisan view because it was a close friend involved, not because of a genuine need to speak out rather than looking the other way.  You felt the need to speak out in Tom's defence, but didn't feel the need to speak out in Raj's defence.

My Two Clubs, a bigoted, narrow-minded person that I hardly know or care for NEVER makes a difference to my mood, no matter what tripe they spout.  Most of the time it is ignored, some of the time you may wish to start the ball rolling to "put them right" but either way, they aren't worth ruining a day for.

There's not a shadow of doubt that I became more impassioned about the "burn a caravan" comment because it was directed at Tom, no doubt at all. However, I'd have had the same view as to the matter if it were a complete stranger, but I guess I'd not have felt quite as strongly, it's true. Having now reflected a litttle more, there were 3 factors though - 1), the comment itself, 2) the lack of anyone (including mutual friends/acquaintances) saying "steady on, that's ott", 3) & the sheer stupidity that folks can get so bitter & twisted over a poker forum. A sort of psychological triple range merge if you like.

As to the Raj thing, you are incorrect, I said my piece, you may be assured. The man was just a wrong 'un, one of life's bad winners & bad losers, chuntering non-stop about how bad he runs, & then eventually going too far in his comments towards Raj. Abusing the dealers is never right, ever, &, for better or worse, I'm usually the first to make the point at the table when things kick off.

I also have strong physical feeling towards Raj, as she has such incredible elbows. (I have an elbow fetish).
