Think you'll find this interesting

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-20399859

And more from the same series

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00zy57x

Big plus one for the second of those links  - the creation of a river from the south to the north of China with onsite creation of 12ton sections of concrete channel seems right up your street.

Thought you might be interested in this. I don't think it's fully up and running yet, but might be quite interesting.

I saw this pic-

So I thought I'd look up the story behind it and it turns out to be a very interesting one-

Although as it transpires the pic isn't of him.

Good morning Carl.

Was good to see you at Luton on Saturday, I do hope you enjoyed it.  We discussed Tom, which is apt, because.....

That link, Mr Horace Greasley.......I have a horrible feeling you intended to post that on Tom's Diary (Mr Greasley hailed from Ibstock Leicestershire quite close to Tom).

Anyway, it is here now, so.....

Oh my word - what an amazing thing. Everyone should read it, then read it again, just to understand the full extent of it. The section "Prisoner of War", describing the train journey, had me recoiling in horror, whilst "Camp One" describes daily rations of a bowl of cabbage water, whilst the guards feasted on eggs & bacon. Temperatures of MINUS 40, too.

I know it is a cliche (much over-used by me, guilty as charged) but you really cannot make that sort of stuff up.

The part that caught my eye was this;
'The mistreatment at Fort VIII came to a halt when an inspection delegation from Geneva, Switzerland arrived.[2] A brave soldier named Charlie Cavendish told the inspectors of the horrors the prisoners had experienced at the camp even though the Germans had tried to cover this up prior to the inspection.[2] Fort VIII was being shut down and the prisoners would be transferred. Cavendish knew beforehand that he would die at the hands of the SS for his actions but did so anyways in an effort to save his comrades and fellow prisoners.[2] Cavendish was missing at roll call the next day and was never seen or heard from again but forever remembered for his kind heart.'

That is one of the bravest acts I've ever heard of.
I can't imagine myself ever having the courage to do that.

Extraordinary, because he knew he was sentencing himself to death by doing so.

In fact, most of the stuff on that link was just as amazing.

I'm so glad Carl Posted it up, but at the same time, it's a bit of a reality check.

Before we move on from that stuff Carl posted up......

I seem to spend a lot of time musing on how our use of language has changed down the years, or more specifically, how specfic words have had their meaning devalued.

For example......social-media has changed the meaning of the word "friend". Someone who links with us on Social Media is known as a "friend", or a "follower", even though we have never, & will never, meet them. In fact, they MAY link up with us specifically to attack, harass, or abuse us. But they are still deemed to be, by Social-Media definition, a friend.

"hero" is another.

Horace Greasley would, by any definition, be a hero. Yesterday, I saw a chap who had lost 12 million ($$$'s one assumes) at Chinese poker described as a "hero", though I'm not sure that would be the word of choice for many.

There must be some degrees of "friend" & "hero" surely?

All very perplexing, & interesting.

I do like to see language evolve, but at my age, it does all get a bit perplexing & confusing to see such polar opposites described in the same way.

I absolutely understand the traditional definition of those two words, but as to the new definitions, my problem is what do we replace the original with during the transition?

PS - Nope, I doubt anyone gives a monkey, but it does intrigue me.

I think hero has the same meaning in both senses, just in one case it's being used in a 'modern' ironic sense.

As for friend? Well that's what adjectives are for.
