Can barely believe I did that rub & the very next moment, PhilThePower turned up itt.

Two direct hits with one bullet.

Like most Derby fans, my sentiments about Leicester are pretty much summed up by Sky's poker playing presenter Helen Chamberlain, some years ago on Soccer A.M.

The Foxes were the fans of the week and when our then manager John Gregory rang in (dark days, very dark days-we even lost to Brentford under his stewardship) he was greeted by a chorus of boys, to which the splendid Miss Chamberlain exclaimed:

"Ah shadup, Derby hate Forest and Forest hate Derby and that's all there is to it!"

As I stood behind the goal at Wembley, absorbing our play-off defeat, surrounded by despair, I consoled myself with the thought, 'At least we'll return to this part of the world next year and witness the splendour of Griffin Park once again.'

Alas, perhaps, Miss Chamberlain moved on from Sky Poker some 6 or 7 years back as I recall. She was some feisty lass to work with.

"Rehearsal is at 7pm Helen".

"Rehearsal will be when I'm ready, & not before, kiddo".

"Err, fair enough".

Great character.

Griffin Park, eh? Theatre of Dreams.

Cracking photo, this.

Who was playing who, in which Stadium, on what occasion, & when? Bonus points for naming 6 of the players in view.

Even Tighty won't get that without googling.

Clue - It was a Cup Final.

Think it is such an evocative photograph, & sort of typifies the Ground as it was back then.

It had it's own Railway Station, or "Halt", too.

the halt only opened in 1990 but the line ran past the home end before then as the picture indicates

the halt cost £26,000 to build and only four trains EVER stopped there (for the biggest of games). it was unused for every other game

when i went to the ground, via the halt, in my early 20s for the first time I was amazed

a melee of odd angled stands. sitting on the pop side at the top you almost hung over the pitch. sitting at the far end you sat almost at 45 degress to the pitch

we won there, 3-2 iirc, with shilton in goal for the home team and i stood under the pop stand seats and such was the commotion above i felt sure the stand would collapse on us standing

oh, and there is defiinitely a rivalry with leicester, no matter what their fans say. probably deny it as they haven't beaten us for so long!

It was the final of the Watney Cup, a wonderfully barmy idea to have the top scorers in all the divisions of the football league play each other in a knock-out competition.

This picture shows the Rams, the second division side under Brian Clough, beating the first division's top scorers Manchester United 4-1.

The Watney Cup also saw the first ever penalty shootout to take place in England. The first player to miss in a penalty shootout...?

Denis Law.

I loved The Baseball Ground. With 15,000 in there the atmosphere seemed 10 times better than a full Pride Park. Do Leicester fans feel the same about Filbert Street? Quite enjoyed going there although the view for away fans was awful. We would be in this tiny little stand watching from pitch level looking across at a wonderful main stand.

We really don't think of Leicester as a rival. Forest obviously, followed by Leeds.

yes, miss filbert st, the new "bowls" are not the same

for all its faults (two very sub-standard sides parts of the ground) it had a character you don't see much of these days

the watney cup game i think the players are

sadler, ure, bobby charlton, kidd, stiles, crerand

think the derby player is alan durban. not sure on that one

p.s many many derby fans think fo leicester as a rival. i see it every season. but won't next ;-)

Obviously the loss of the history of the grounds will affect you as a grounds geek, but is the main problem not seating & the cleaning up of football?  I know Celtic are trying to introduce the safe standing terracing (along the lines of Borrussia Dotmund's stand) but it seems to be blocked at every turn, no-one wants to sign off on it.

I'm off to the Millerntor in Hamburg in a couple of weeks, a ground that's been almost completely rebuilt in the last few years,  (first new stand built in 2006, Nord Kurve due to complete this year). Despite all those changes hte atmosphere has survived, a lot of that attributed to the keeping of standing areas on 3 sides & a lot of fan involvement in the plans (and in decorating their end when it was built),  the fans weren't happy that the Main Stand ended up all seating though. If you ever get a chance head over for a game there Rich, it's a wonderful experience, what football supporting should (and used to be) like.

i have no problem with the seating and "cleaning up" of football. was never one to be in the middle of the pack, craning to see or leading the chants. i am in a minority with that though. Never ever had a drink before a football game, for example. Love going on my own, being in the stadium 90 mins before kick off etc etc

the character of the stadia, design, quirks etc was it for me. nothing against the mcalpine and birse bowls, cheap and quick to put up, low risk but i hark back to something that isn't possible now...sights like this

My best memory of grounds from that era which will never happen again was the 20 foot high wire fence in front of the away fans at Oxford's manor ground.  I never understood why it had to be 20 feet high did they really think anyone could actually climb a 12 foot high fence and get on the pitch.
