I thought there were no "roads" in the City of London?

Geo

You've got me with that one Geo. What's that about? (and Happy New Year btw, hope you had a good time).

On the excellent Michael Portillo's programme last night - bradshaw's train journeys etc...a cabbie gave him a challenge

"give me a route from bishopsgate to the old bailey that does not cross a road"

and as Geo implies, its a trick question, as the City of London only contains lanes, streets, gates, etc and not a single road

tikay probably knew this

Ahh, now I see where Geo was coming from.

I never knew that anyway. I do now.

I often watch that Show, & try to count how many times Michael namechecks "in my Bradshaws"....it must be 10 or more times per show. Product placement with a difference.

Think I'd watch ANY Show that featured Michael Portillo, I think he is excellent on general (non political) matters. Very self-deprecating these days, too. After his humiliation at the pools, & the Paxman interview, he famously said....

And a prosperous 2015 to you buddy. Hope you are well.

Things were deliberately quiet over the Hogmanay period as I just wanted to chill right out, been over doing it at work for a while.

Am on leave till 26th and was hoping to pop over to Islay for a couple of days trekking/camping but the weather has been so bad that it's impossible to tell if the ferry will go on a day to day basis..

May opt to just walk the canals, probably the Union/Forth Clyde route Edinburgh to Bowling.

Aye, Islay's a bit exposed with the high winds at the moment.

Just waiting for the blizzards to start, wind screaming round the house.

Had a sober Hogmanay, new drink drive limits & no public transport to the game against Partick Thistle meant I was going to be driving. Then they called the game off. FML.

I love this programme. Weird one for me to enjoy I think but I think i find his voice very easy to listen to. I do often fall asleep and have my nap during this programme but nonetheless i still enjoy it!

Wonderful, simply wonderful.

See, that's the thing, good writing is not hard - if you know what you are doing. Simple, short sentences, beautiful observation, and a cracking twist in the tail.

I wrote a short story yesterday, hoping to get it published on a certain Sports Betting website, and was quite pleased with it. It never got rejected, but for annoyingly technical reasons, it looks like it won't get published. It went by the rather odd title of "Super Bowl 50 & Silver Bullion".

Don't give the game away, as it may yet see the light of day, but I bet you can guess how that title arose......

Happened to a friend of a friend of my mother once, and to Tom, and probably to Woody Allen too.

it is a very commonly seen Urban Myth or FOAF

I visited a Yokon gold rush museum today Tony which was very interesting. Two things that amazed me were that if that old saying about being worth your weight in gold was true I would have been worth $55,042.08 in 1897 but being a fat lad I am now worth a staggering $4,205,593.16 today.

This seems amazing but was on the wall in the write up. In 1898 Congress passed a bill establishing an assay office (sounds like it was the first ever cash for gold shop) where finders of gold could cash their gold in. On it's first day of business it took in over 1 million dollars worth of gold, that's in 1898.

A cup of coffee job but an intersting read when you have a spare 30 mins or so.

There was also an interesting piece on the controversy regarding Russia selling Alaska (or the part it decided it owned) to the US
