it was a shame that the sportinglife stopped as a paper..it was soo much better than the Racing Post. (though these days the RP pretty much owns racing even compared to the sportinglife website).

Yes, a sad loss was "The Life", but it lost money heavily year after year, & it's demise was inevitable. Means of cross-subsidy from the phlanx of betting mediums we have these days were not even dreamt of then. See, got in a word ending with "mt".

The Life was awesome. Green-Seal Service, SL Ratings for all the Horses, proper dog-cards. I was not much of a George Ennor fan, but I idolised & adored the writing of the Breeding Expert, in his weekly Breeding Column, Tony Morris. I believe he still writes, but he must be older than Karabiner now.
He alerted me to a Sire called High-Line, who threw wonderful stayers,
Ennor write a great piece in the Racing Post after the horse owned by a bunch of hacks (Ennor, Geoff Lester and a number of others ) won at Newmarket on Cesarawich Day. It pretty much summed up how I felt about my involvement with our horses from the same yard, who I also considered to be "mine" despite the fact there were lots of us that owned them.
David Elsworth loved High Line's offspring, but believed they were sometimes inclined to go a bit odd in the head as they got older - he trained plenty so he should know. Certainly Muse started to display some mulishness at the start as he got older he messed about before the start of the Chirstmas Hurdle that he won, and I will go to my grave believing he would have beaten Flakey Dove at Cheltenham if he hadn't whipped round at the start. And the trophy would have looked quite nice on my mantelpiece for the few days that would have been my turn.

Greyhounds distances are also well interesting, & the same logic applies, some dogs just don't get a yard further than their optimum distance. The official yardstick for a Grader "running to form" (& thus avoiding an "Inquiry into the running of") in those days was, I think, two lengths, with a length equal to a fraction of a second. Phenomonally consistent. Except when backed heavily.....
[/quote]
a length for a greyhound is calculated to .08 of a second and you must have been mistaken in thinking that its variance in distance and time was 2 lengths or 0.16 of a second then there would have been stewards enquiries all over the place.
a greyhound in the late eighties and early nineties cold improve by upto 1 whole second and not a short head over otherwise an enquiry would be called,
also if a dogs weight differed by a kilo or more either way between runs then it wouldn't be allowed to run.
what these figures are now i wouldnt know

I'm led to think of metamorphosis. Is there an alternative spelling without the 'e'?
