In sheer news terms September 11th simply cannot be surpassed as a recent news event, simply because not only did it come out of the blue, but it was the start of something that has shaped our world ever since.
Doesn't matter whether you are for or against what it lead to but
two commercial airliners were deliberately flown into the tallest buildings in New York and then the towers, with over 3000 people in them, collapsed live on television
.
Read that bit again, then put it in your list.

Clinton and Lewinsky ... a politician gets caught with his dick where it shouldnt be ... nothing new there then.
Why has this etched itself into your memory ?
yet Nixon & watergate doesnt even make the shortlist ?

The Hillsborough, Bradford and Heysel disasters are forever imprinted on my memory. As a Liverpool fan, Hillsborough was the saddest day, Heysel the darkest.

I would imagine 9/11 would be top of most lists. Not criticising tikay for it not being on his, but it does seem awfully strange that it isn't..explanation or not!

I guess you are probably right.
Thg problem is, I want to discuss & debate them all - & my views on 9/11, it's cause, & the sheer perfection of it's execution, would cause some serious argument, & I'm too old for all that. Merely saying "the perfection of the execution", even pardoning the pun, upsets people, because they think it means I condone it, or don't feel aghast at the loss of 3,000 soils. Which is nonsense, of course.
In the same way, I'd love to discuss the progression of Jerry Adams, & his evolving role in Ireland, but, for obvious reasons, it'd be "difficult".

I seriously doubt anyone could get stick on here for making a controversial post about Sept 11th...

The Clinton thing is a bit odd - it's almost like I remember it for the jaw-dropper of a quote Clinton came out with, on Live TV, & his surprise that he never got it through.
He said - & I quote almost perfectly, all those years on...
"I never had sex with
that woman
".
It was the put-down, the rubdown, the arrogance, embodied in the phrase "that woman". She was not "that woman" when he was getting his way with her.
If ever a man needed to NOT antagonise his ex knock-off, it was then. And he said that, on Live TV. And then wondered why she chased him through the Courts.

Well I can't include everything if it's "my" Top Ten!
Of those, only Chernobyl concerns me as a genuine omission.
I'd be interested to see other folks Top Ten's. But nobody's been that brave - or that sad.
I never read beyond the Headline of the Challenger thing. Never "touched" me one iota.

Bradford, yes, that disturbed me a lot.
It's best I don't comment on Hillsborough or Heysel.
