Someone mentioned Repton Boxing Club earlier.

I did some filming there once for Sporting Odds, Joe Legge was my "man" at SO. He then went to Virgin, & I went with him, but I had to part company, as it clashed with my Sky Poker jobbie. Joe then moved on again, & is now at Betfair.  We shall do stuff together again at some time, in some way, he's a good man, & he was very good to me. A true Gentleman, in fact.

Jacky gahs ta Brough Hill Fair

Jacky hed niver seen now't like't afooar. He'd bin ta Peerith an' Kirby, an' Appleby an' Shap an' Meaburn; but nowt ta come up wi' Brough Hill. They come frae o' ower t' country side wi' o' macks an' manners of stuff ta sell. Nags o' o' sooarts. Young 'uns an' auld 'uns, t'nags 'at kick, an' nags, if it wasn't fer 't laal bit o' ginger, 'at cud hardly stand up ta be selt. 

Jacky had never seen anything like it before. he had been to Penrith, and Appleby, and Shap and Meaburn, but nothing was a good as Brough Hill.

They come from all over the countryside with all makes and manner of stuff to sell. Horses of every description. Young ones and old ones. Horses that kick, and horses that (If it wasn't for that little bit of fighting spirit) could hardly stand up to be sold.

I enjoyed this teaser from a Hellmuth book some 5 or 6 years ago. It came - allegedly (though it matters not) - from a home game, where 6 guys were playing 4 card PLO.

Fell ponies were often referred to around the turn of the 19th/20th centuries as either "Fell Galloways" or "Brough Hill ponies" because most of the young stock were sold off at this "back-end" sale. Other fairs were held during the year at Penrith, Wigton, Rosley (near Wigton), Appleby, Kirkby Stephen and Meaburn, but Brough Hill was acknowledged as "the" sale for the hill ponies.

Close. Brough Hill ponies are renowned for being short and stocky with big powerful hindquarters.

"Back end" In this context, refers to the winter time.
