Menwith Hill is very close by which is a RAF/Us Airforce base. It's main function is a NATO communications centre, there are strangle 'golf ball' like structures which house antennae that can be seen from the road, A59 I think is right.
The reservoir system has three reserviors one after the other along the valley, Thurcross, Fewston then Swinty. I don't think there are any more.

It's very pretty part of the world. Yorkshire Water have done very well to improve access to these areas. I'm always in awe of the scale of the engineering that built the reservoirs, and that they manage to do a job much bigger than they were designed for so many years later.

Yes, I recall the "golf balls" sat atop the hills, a most peculiar sight given the surroundings.

Yes, fair play to YWA, all the Reservours are accessible, & they beat Alton Towers all day long for wow factor. To think those resrvoirs were designed & constructed over a hundred years ago, for, as you say, a much lesser capacity, is astonishing. How often do UK reservoirs, despite their age, fail?

Paul came and sat next to me shortly after this hand and told me all about it.

10400 to call, over 30k in the pot so worth a look at a flop.

"If the guy shoves instead of flatting the 14000 I obviously pass"

Fair enough.

Really? I mean, he HAS to catch 2 pair or Trips minimum, or 8-9 & a prayer.

If he has that price, fair play to him.

I can only quote the man's justification.

To be fair it is a bad play from Mr JJ to not iso shove but 10 7 is obviously not the hand you expect to see following a call.

He disguised it's strength very well don't you think?

Oh, I'm not arguing, just chewing the cud.

And you are right - he sure did disguise his hand well.......

oops, he did it again! Same guy!

This just reported on the DTD Live Update......

".....Oh boy

Paul Rayner raises the button and Pete Charalambous re-raises from the small blind. Rayner calls

flop

Pete checks, Rayner 12,000, Charalambous check raises to 25,000 called

turn    check, 25,000 bet, all in from Charalambous for about 150,000 total

CALL! says Rayner

Charalambous flips

Rayner flips    two spades

river

Rayner once more moves into a big chip lead ....."

Good grief.

I guess I ought to insert a token piece of poker chat now & then, so did anyone see this hand from yesterday's Live Update? Tourney Life is so cheap these days. Though I'm sure everyone wll be on my case & say the play was good.

This is C & P from yesterdays splendid DTD live Update by his Tight-Ness.

"Quite a hand here

Mark Westbrook raises to 3600 utg

Paul Rayner flats as does the button

Rick Trigg pushes for 14,000 more from the big blind

Westbrook calls

Rayner calls!

Button passes

So we have a three way coup and a 60,000 side pot for starters

flop

Westbrook pushes

Rayner beats him into the pot for a 80,000 main pot, and 140,000 in total

Triggs flips

Westbrook

Rayner

turn and river

and Paul Rayner becomes an enormous chip leader ....."

The mind boggles.

Paul came and sat next to me shortly after this hand and told me all about it.

10400 to call, over 30k in the pot so worth a look at a flop.

"If the guy shoves instead of flatting the 14000 I obviously pass"

Fair enough.

That judgement is poor imo. He thinks it's an obvious pass if Westbrook shoves all his money in...but Rayner must at least figure Westbrook is gonna shove all his money in on the flop. So what's the difference? The guy gets to see 3 cards with his 7-10 costing him 14k before deciding that his hand is an obvious pass if Westbrook moves all-in? Which he will do a lot of the time with what must look like a genuine hand when he flats pre. Just looking at pot-odds in isolation without any anticipation of post flop play doesn't justify the call at all. And those considerations are just about Westbrook. He's still gotta beat Trigg across 5 cards with 7-10 or he trebles up a good player. The call was very poor and I thought Trigg got properly mugged there. The Jacks play is fine if Westbrook thinks Rayner makes the call with hopeless hands imo.

As you very well know Mr Mantis, when someone makes a "creative" play, they can always justify it. Nobody ever makes a mistake, don't you see?

nice photo of juarez in mexico, a place i need to visit (not thru choice) next year at some point. apparantly the place is bonkers with shootings in the street (drug related) a daily occurance.

Good side - you've been going to the gym so present a smaller target.

Bad side - you've been going to the gym & broke your ankle so present a slower target.

better get back to that gym next week on the excercise bike and weights, with the rocky music playing on the ipod....

Talking of trivia, there seemed, to my mind, to be an abnormally large number of photographs of bullfighters in those galleries. Why so? Is it suddenly popular again? And do we all share the same view that I do when the Matador gets pinned by the bull - "YES!" - ?

been to quite a few bullfights and am totally amazed at the whole spectacle. obviously i can understand peoples revulsion with it. my favourite is actually the portuguese version which is quite a bit different ('matadors' generally ride horses and is also an amazing show of horsemanship). the best bit is where some lunatic takes on the bull without any weapons. he slowly walks towards it in a straight line, taunting it, and when the bull charges him, he has to try and wrestle it to the ground, along with all his mates who are lined up behind him. sometimes it doesnt go too well

Not sure if he's a Shepherd or a Wise man, or even Jesus, but here's Reecey boy, presumably in the School Nativity play. Niot sute that Jesus was into "thumbs up", but it works for me.

Thanks Maureen.

Merry Christmas Reece, & many more of them.

Obv a shepherd - those are sheep behind him - and he is wearing a tea towel on his head. Shepherds wear tea towels, wise men wear paper crowns. I thought everyone knew that???

How do you know they are sheep behind him? They don't loook like sheep to me.

My Nativity Play appearance, at the age of about 6, remains firmly in my memory - strange what sticks in the mind. I dont know who I played, but I had to scan the horizon, looking for the three wise men. Luckily, it was a non-speaking part. "I se-se-se-se-seeee n-n-n-no wi-wi-wise m-m-m-men.

Religion not my strongest suit, but traditionally in nativity plays Jesus is played by a baby doll?  I think he was meant to be fairly young round about the time....
