For my book I would take a good military survival handbook. Something like SurvivalIQ - The Wilderness Survival Handbook. Or The US Army Survival Manual. Or maybe Ray Mears Outdoor Survival Handbook. (If I could get a sneak preview of the terrain pre casting away, I could make a more informed choice)
With one of these and a little application, you could provide yourself with endless luxuries.
For my one "Allowed" luxury, I want a dog. I know that's against the rules
, but I can be extraordinarily persuasive when I really want to be.
If, despite my best efforts, I definitely can't have a dog, I would consider it a luxury to be cast away on an island with wolves or foxes so that I could start my own domestication programme.
Granted - if you leave the moles in
pece.
Aye.

Coming back from london on a train one day we sat at a table seat next to the seat that Ray Mears was at Tom. The train broke down at Doncaster and we were sat for about 30 mins until the conductor came into our carraige and told us we would have to change trains and that would be in about 20-25 minutes.
Ray Mears, survival expert, then went into a rant about' what are we gonna do for the next 25 mins the eh? Just sit here and wait , I suppose. Is there anywhere on here I can still get a drink or a sandwich?'
the irony eh?
I'm really surprised by that Phil - I thought his screen person was "him".
Another hero off the list.

Extraordinary, & yet, there were thousands like him. I wonder if "modern man" would be so strong, so dyurable, so courageous?

I've read a few of those stories Kev, endurance almost beyond belief.
If you get the chance, read The Railway Man by Eric Lomax. That's a corker.
I have this book - in fact, I think Tom may have given it to me. It's beyond belief. The subject eventually goes back to Japan, in recent years, to meet - & forgive - his torturers.
Mr Lomax was also a Scot.

you have missed the bigger point tho, if John Terry thought anything about the best thing for Englands chances to win the World Cup he wouldnt have done what he did. What he thought was, I am above 'normal' rules so f** it.
That has led to one of the squad withdrawing from it, so that lessens the chances of England winning the cup, the point that Terry is a better footballer doesnt matter unless you are simply viewing it from a sports side, not a responsililty to your friends and colleagues and respect for things you do and things you dont do.
Wayne Bridge has done that but in the end he is the one paying the price of not going to a tournament that would give him a chance to win the highest accolade in his profession, where the villian could well do that.
Dont seem fair really
No, it's not fair, life rarerly is.
Only half the story has come out, of course. Wayne moved up to Manchester in the January, when he was transferred. Lady Wayne stayed in London. Wayne thought they were still Partners, but JT was already in there.
So Wayne is like any guy in that spot, his "mate" has done the ultimate dirty on him - short of publishing nude pics of her on a poker Forum - & he's lost his girl.
Most of us have been there, when we've suffered one or the other, & we don't act rationally, because we are hurting.
I don't blame Wayne for his stance one bit, pride & ego & bruised hearts are powerful things.
Sod's Law will come into force, of course, & JT will get injured & miss the World Cup, & Wayne would have got the slot that the lovely Mr Cole will probably have to vacate.
The girls story amused me. She worked, variously, as a "Lingerie Model", & more interestingly, as a "VIP Hostess" at various upper class London Clubs.
I wonder what the Job Description said as to what a "VIP Hostess" has to do?

Wayne Bridge has made himself unavailable for the World Cup squad Tony as he said his selection would be 'untenable and potentially divisive'.
So the guy that was let down by his childs mother and former best friend is now forced to withdraw from a squad because it might lead to a 'divisive' camp. Yet the guy that did the dirty on him still thinks he could be Engalnd captain again.
I don't agree Bridge was forced to withdraw from the squad. I think his decision is pretty weak actually and it's one he'll definitely regret. The guy has a realistic shot at going down in history by winning the World Cup and he's prepared to let JT rob him of that?? If England win in SA all the players including JT will be legends for life. How's that gonna feel Wayne? Even if England don't win Bridge robs himself of the opportunity to perform on the world stage and bag himself a lucrative new contract when he gets home. Bridge is seemingly letting JT screw every aspect of his life. So if Bridge is too much of a pussy to treat JT as a random anon and get on with business then I'm glad he's sitting this one out.
Yes, all ,logically true. But guys in Wayne's spot don't think logically, & it's easy to understand why, especially if you can empathise with what he's going through. And unless you have, you can't.

I mentioned a few weeks back how difficult I found it to watch some of the Winter Olympics, speed-skating I think it was.
This week, I watched some of something called, I think, "Skeleton". Oh WOW!
They go down an icy track, no brakes or suchlike, lying on their face on a small sled thing, the speeds are colossal (100mph?), & one mistake & it's all over.
These are girls, & Ladies, incredibly brave, as brave as brave can be. And presumably, amateurs.
At the bottom of the track, the atmo is corinthian, just warm, & wonderful, to all competitors alike, everyone cheers everyone for getting down safely.
Proper sport, & I was enthralled by it.
Now, back to JT & AC at Chelsea..

You'd have to be pretty dumb not to expect, & agree, that whatever Government is in power will need to address the Budget Defecit. It's not a debate, it has to be done.
Yesterdasy the spin doctors were selectively leaking Mr Darling's proposed budget cuts in public spending, £11 billion was the rumoured number. Nobody, nowhere, mentioned which Depaertments would have to suffer the cuts, or for how much. They could not. becaue they don't know.
The Times ran the story on the front page. The headline?
"Hospitals to face axe as Treasury saves £11bn".

Yes, & I thought it was just splendid for the girl. For a Brit - a West Country Brit at that - to win a Gold in that must be like a Hawaiian winning a downhill skiing medal, it's almost impossible.
I scanned the Forum the next day fearing the worst though, reminded of the brutal treatment our female Swimming Gold Medalist at the last Olympics got. Supposing she is not physically perfect, & has a big nose, or a hairy mole?
"Not keen on your one mate, you seen her hooter?" from some spotty poker geek who needs one off the wrist every night, amuses in a way, but it's kinda sad too. For the geeky guy, I mean.

Amazing graphic that, Rich, & it's good that there is now a Tsunami Warning System, not that it will help most of those at risk.
I believe it's pretty bad across Chile, with Santiago Airport - prersumably a major hub - closed, too.
Haiti is barely over the worst, & now there's another, in Chile.
We don't know we've lived.
