Lower case b for blonde, I
violently agree with tikay
here.
It matters muchly.
A lifetime first for me.
Like an aggressive "I check" in poker, I guess.

How extraordinary is the Rooney story? Terrific, compulsive watching, too. Amazing how Gill & Ferguson kept it under wraps so long, too, since Auguat 16th or whatever, & the story never really got out. I've read every line of it, & love it to bits.
It is not as awesome as the Tiger Woods tale, but that was too ugly in so many ways, & although I revelled in it, I felt sort of sad, too.
Been a great year for non-sport news stories too - I really enjoyed the volcanic ash swindle, & all but the actual climax of the Chilean Mine thing. The actual escape was an anti-climax, & the ridiculous media circus was too much.
Weird how much media attention was paid to the Chilean mine tale. Three dozen Chilean miners escaped death thanks to a miracle of engineering - truly fantastic.
Meanwhile, in China, on average, 23 miners perish in the mines every day, & you won't find a column inch devoted to that.
I don't want to turn your diary into football chat about Rooney, Fergie, Man Utd etc but I just want to highlight something Fergie said in his press conference on Tuesday. In amongst his "surprise" at the story, despite knowing for nearly 2 months, there was this little sentence; "I was even going to give the lad financial advice". What do you think Fergie meant by that? Has Rooney got money problems and needs to get himself sold to pick up the signing on fee?
As with the Woods' story, this may get more interesting as the days go on.

Good spot, Steve, I picked up on that, too. Could be he has been betting big, who knows?
I think Paul Stretford is a total wrong 'un, & the Premiership must be as incompetent & toothless as the Gaming Commission in allowing him to remain involved. I would not trust Stretford one inch. And I think he is the key to all this. He has history, too....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Stretford
GREAT story though, & I'm lapping it up. Could anyone have predicted it 2 or 3 months ago? And now, suddenly, it's a minute to midnight, & the position is almost irretrievable.
Interesting that yesterday's 10am Meeting did not bring about any further statements. It suggests, perhaps, that ground is being given on Rooney's side, perhaps.
Hard to imagine I could think this, but I sort of feel a bit sorry for Rooney. He needs a good life-mentor, & he lacks one. He'll end up filthy rich, but un-fulfilled.
Anyway, as you note, the story has plenty more mileage yet.

I'm never doing "Chelsea are shit" & all that myopic football fan twaddle, but I actually love the politics of the game, the Managerial landscape, all that stuff. The Managers are the ones who most fascinate me, in fact, & I don't care which Team they are with.
So bring it on, I love it.
Who could have predicted the "Hodgson-Liverpool-whoops it's all gone tits up" tale? That Dirty Harry could confound everyone at Spurs? Blackpool make the Premiership?
Wormy only.
I bumped into Peter Nolan the other week - you remember him, when he was a Big Suit at Wm Hill?
We met at the "Raising the Stakes" thing for GOSH, & he introduced himself to me. Said he was in the Wapping Studio Gallery when I had my first ever screen test, & that THREE peeps were screen-tested, which was news to me. He's now the Big Cheese for Genting Online. Where is Paul Tililng these days? And Rhow?
I spoke to Thewy at about 7am this morning. Amanda has gone to Belfast for the weekend, family, so he's at home, in charge. He said "yup, I'm at home, just me & the boys".
What a thing to say "just me & the boys", think behind that little statement. How proud must he be? Three lovely lads, # 4 on the way, & a better Dad you'd be hard-pressed to find.
I so loved that period in my life, doing Poker 425, Phil Quayle, Tilling, you, Billy, Rhow, Thewy. Great times. Still great now, too, but different great.
Good to hear from you Steve, keep in touch, & keep posting please.
PS - I still work with Gidzo, Johnny G came & went, then came back, then went again, & sadly, never heard another peep from DC. Ugh, what a dreadful, dreadful, story that is.

The BBC (Radio 4) have done THE most extraordinary Series, the success of which has taken everyone by surprise, "A History of the World in 100 Objects".
It's a partnership with the British Musuem, the narrator is
just right
, though the intro & exit music grates.
Last night, to my surprise, they did # 99 - the Credit Card.
It was a brilliant piece of Radio, & there is a whole bunch of stuff about Credit Cards I had never realised. I'm not sure, but I think they suggested that they originated in Saudi Arabia, though that makes no sense to me. A curiosity is that all banknotes have the insignia of their Country on them somewhere, in that they belong to a particular State, whereas "plastic" is universal, in almost every sense. And ALL Credit Cards are the same size, the world over.
The Series is the BBC at their very best. I cannot imagine Tighty has missed it, either. It's seriously geeky.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_History_of_the_World_in_100_Objects
PS - We learned about
exonumia
, as opposed to pure
numismatics
. I'll have a fiver each way that neither Tighty, or MereNovice, know both words. (AndrewT will know ONE of the two). And no, neither did I. I may try to squeeze both words into a poker Show. That'd be pretty neat.

I heard that one. The Saudi connection was regarding the credit card's ability to circumnavigate Sharia law.
Did you hear the preceding programme? It was a big brain maths jobbie, right up your street.

I would guess that most people are aware that
numismatics
is the study of money - often specifically used to describe coin collecting.
Many scholars would consider
exonumia
to be an abomination of a word being a combination of Greek and Latin roots. Personally, I'm a bit more forgiving.
"
exo
" means "out of" in most contexts so the logical conclusion is that
exonumia
is literally "out of money" (probably not in the sense of "skint").
Given that you have mentioned a radio program on credit cards, I would say that exonumia relates to money "tokens/substitutes" - I assume that poker chips would also be considered as
exonumia
.
Am I close?

Spot on. The worrying thing is, I imagine you did not have to google that. So how are IT peeps so damn clever, & yet so bloody irresponsible as to IT stuff? I've yet to meet one I would trust to do my shopping. Well, not in a timely manner. They should all be shot.

Some might say
they
have tons of intelligence but not an ounce of common sense.
However, I'm sure that you wouldn't indulge in simple stereotypes like that.
Some of us are (almost) normal.
