Much like Celtic on a clothes shopping spree, I've just gone rooting through some bins, and found Saturday's currant bun. In his diary Clod wrote about Nigel Twiston-Davis and Cornelius Lysaught, but nowt about DC.

Maybe it wasn't last week Chompy. I only got the story second hand and, if it's true, I'm surprised I hadn't heard it before Claude put it in his column. Apparently it was where he was spotted, nothing more than that really

Which was where? I'd love to know that he's ok.

lRooney has just signed a 5 year contract! So this story was nothing more than a bargaining tool between Rooney's agent & Utd. Sky Sports New will have to find a new story to get hysterical about lol

Whoops, you scooped me!

Well I never. He played that a bit sharp, eh? Wonder what reception the fans will give him? And how the new dynamic between he & Fergie will work? I'm struggling to understand parts of it, to be honest.

I tried something similar with JNK once, to try & wheedle a better deal, he shot back, as quick as a flash, "The doors over there, leave the car keys on my desk, I'll arrange a Taxi to take you home, Cheerio".

What do you think would have happened if you had fired the second barrel?

He'd have 5 bet me.

I'm going to return to that, later, as it's such a great question as to my relationship with JNK.

For now, bed awaits. I'm full of 'cold, feel awful, & for some odd reason, have barely slept in 3 nights.

I was going to Southend tonight, for the £100-er, but I'm gonna swerve it, & spend the evening in bed with the lappie, & maybe play a few Tourneys. I still hope to do Southend tomorrow, though, for the £300, all being well.

Pedants, look away now. (I stole this from SP).

Stephen Fry, the genius, at his very best, on the written word. Can you imagine having his mastery of the language?

tikay, I don't know if you did get round to watching that documentary about the submarine being built in Barrow.  Cost billions, an amazing feat of engineering.

Well, someone couldn't drive it properly:

I admire Mr. Fry greatly but I suspect that, if he spent much time perusing poker forums, he would change his opinion on the sloppy use of the English language.

From a purely practical standpoint, it it takes an additional five minutes to compose a post in a readable and readily understandable format and it saves each reader one minute in reading and comprehension time, then it only requires five readers of a post before the human species has a nett gain of time and effort. It seems to me to be good manners to make the effort.

Was that snobby enough?

But young Mr Fry eludes to this in his lecture (Let's call it that rather than rant as it's Mr Fry). For an interview, or in a formal setting, one should make the effort. On a poker forum, although I am sure it would be appreciated, surely you should feel comfortable enough to allow your "local" dialect to flow through your fingers as though it was the spoken word?

I don't mind saying that I have a little man-crush on Mr Fry as well, what a beautiful individual he is.

tbh, any man who doesn't have a slight man-crush on the erudite Mr. Fry is in denial.

I loved the animated text that accompanied the monologue. It really brought it to life.

I think it was written with Tony in mind. He's a pedant you know. (He would say I'm a pedant, but he would be wrong).

This is obviously true.

I went to his (I'm tempted to think that should be 'His') book launch at the Royal Festival Hall for The Fry Chronicles. That ticket was probably the best value for money I've ever spent for any gig.

I have a slight man crush on the person who told me that Stephen Fry is... "A stupid person's idea of what a clever person looks like." Smiley

He is really good though Smiley

It was a spendid lecture, although at one point he said...

"anyone who expresses themselves with originality, delight and verbal freshness is more likely to be mocked, distrusted or disliked than welcomed. The free and happy use of words is seen to be elitist or pretentious."

This is contrary to my experience

There are a variety of reasons people have to be free and happy in their use of words.

Some of these reasons are groovy. (eg they want to convey a slightly different shade of meaning, or for rhythmic reasons)
Some of these reasons are douschy. (eg they want to use as many big words as they can in the mistaken belief that this will inspire awe)

Whether people see you as being groovy or douschy is, in my experience, more of a product of you actually being groovy (or actually being a dousche) and not because you have expressed yourself with verbal freshness.
