There - the first & last bit of poetry on my diary.

IN THE END, IT’S THE HOPE...

Each time they play we always think
It’ll be like 1966;
And it might be the crowd and it might be the drink
As the voices raise and the glasses clink
And the tactics fail and the passing stinks
But each time they play we always think
It’ll be like 1966
But the game is a mess and nobody clicks
And nothing connects when the players kick
And you feel slightly cheated and a little bit sick
And it’s nothing like 1966;

'Cos in the end, it’s the hope that defeats you;
In the end, it’s the hope that deflates
In the end the expectation’s more than you can bear
As you watch the match from behind your chair
With your dad and six of your weeping mates
And you punch the wall and you tear your hair
Because the hope is more than you can bear
And it’s nothing like 1966
When they’re running like chickens and heading like bricks

So here’s my advice: assume they’ll lose
When you’ve sung the Anthem, sing the blues
Pretend you’re watching Rochdale, Barnsley
Peterborough Pompey Hull or Bury;
'Cos football’s up and down like a channel ferry
And you’re sometimes miserable and sometimes merry
If you don’t build ‘em up you can’t knock ‘em down
And if your goalie's a fool and your striker's a clown
And your midfield’s toiling and your manager’s thick
And It’s not too much like 66...
Expect nothing. Expect nothing. That’s McMillan’s Law
Then you’ll be really happy with a nil-nil draw...

A tip-off alerted me to this piece on the web, about me......

Another secret he keeps is that he fancies his co-worker Richard Orford which he has kept a secret for over 2 years. He also thinks Ed Giddens is quiffalicious

Which is utter bollox. There is no such word as quiffalicious.

It's basically that - Google offer an easy way for other sites to gain access to your data (with your permission) - in this case facebook could check your address book and let you know if your friends are on Facebook. Facebook don't offer a similar service in return and Google don't like - I'd reason because it makes it onerous for a user to switch social networks if they have to re add everyone etc and that will make it hard for Google to compete

....and google are keen - VERY keen - to rule the roost in the social networking circus. google have a policy of being leaders in the various fields in which they compete, so this could get interesting.

Google are leaders in web search, online video (with YouTube) and now probably with online maps - but that's all they're number one for.  Not sure if they're anywhere near close to being the leader in any other area they've ventured into?  In fact, there are plenty where they've failed miserably.  Android is doing well and taking larger and larger chunks of the mobile market, but the market share is well behind RIM (Blackberry) and the iPhone.

OK, OK, I missed one word. They aspire to be leaders in every market in which they operate.

It was a secret to me!

I was greatly embarrassed about my Wiki page, too, which is years out of date & totally naff. I've no idea who created it, either. To say it reads badly is an understatement.

Hey-ho, I'm used to being mocked these days. I even get paid for it. Wink

Hope all is well with you, Dawn, it sounded like Tom Carney's Circus when I rung you yesterday. Is it always like that?

A Gentleman by the name of Nick Van de Weyer, who I don't think I know, but is a Facebook "Friend", sent me a link to that Ian McMillan Desert Island Discs jobbie. I hope you take a few minutes to hear him talk. Once you hear the start, you'll want to hear more.

Chompy, a much under-rated writer, full of biting wit & new nicks, is penning a Blog from Vegas for his employers, the Racing Post.

Here's a flavour of it.....

Also on the table were Mike Shannon, aka 'Superman' and Barry Shulman's missus, who looks like "Barry Shulman in a wig"(according to KO'L) or Joan Rivers depending on the light. She didn't like talking about Bazza's WSOPE win or son Jeff's WSOP final table . . . much.

More here.....

Well done's to Claw, who start her new job today. She's had a tough time of late, but a job might just change everything. Go Girlie, go.

Nice results yesterday in the £300 too, for Red, M3Boy, & arguably one of the nicest blokes in DTD, Pete Conduit, who once again binked a big score.

Roy Hodgson must be enjoying Monday, too, more than for some time. Game on in the Premiership.

On the down side, this was a huge shock, this man has been an absolute giant of athletics for longer than I care to remrmber.....

Gebrselassie calls time on career

It may not have been the way he imagined bowing out of athletics after almost two decades of dominance, but marathon world record holder Haile Gebrselassie insisted on Sunday that the time was right for him to retire from the sport.

The Ethiopian, regularly described as the greatest long distance runner of all time, announced his retirement from athletics after abandoning his first bid for ING New York Marathon glory after 16 miles with a knee injury.

``When I announce this, maybe everybody will become a little bit shocked but I don't want to complain any more after this. It's better to stop here," tearful Gebrselassie told a post-race press conference.

The decision brings to an end a stellar career that also brought two Olympic gold medals and saw him break the marathon world record twice, the most recently being two years ago in Berlin with a time of two hours, three minutes and 59 seconds - a landmark which still stands today.

The move came as a surprise seeing as the 37-year-old had been tipped to win Sunday's race, but he insists he cannot continue while carrying the injury.

``I have had no discussion with my manager, with anybody, only myself. That's why it's better to stop here," he added. ``I never think about retiring. But for the first time, this is the day.''

Gebrselassie, who has won more than 130 major races in his career, had an MRI scan on Saturday which showed fluid and tendonitis in his right knee.

Gebrselassie has developed a successful business career away from athletics which he hopes to continue now his running career is over.

"Let me stop and do other work after this. Let me do other jobs. Let me give a chance for the youngsters," said Gebrselassie, who watched fellow countryman Gebre Gebremariam win the men's race.

``Will I miss the race? It's hard because, you know, I want to thank all of you.''

It's a teen thing.  I've three of them so can't be helped.  Bit like that other Lad who's wrongly infatuated with Hanna Montana due to his daughter's interest in her.  But we won't mention any names.  Mostly because I can't remember which one I'm on about.

Wow. Dunno about fair or not, but if anyone thinks they need that in Live poker, then they are wrong in the head.

All it needs is the ability to concntrate, watch who's doing what, develop "feel" for the players on your table. If you cannot do that, (remember, we are only 1-Tabling, & it is not obligitary to have headphones on) they have no business playing Live poker.

But he may not be that far off the mark. So many Live players miss who it is to act, miss preceding action, da de da, then try to blame someone else - the Dealer usually - for their lack of attention.

I received an astonishing thing fom 'Stars recently, detailing what "artificial aids" they do & do not support. I could not believe the list - there are scores & scores of these sites, providing in-game help to poker players. I guess the Pros, & those who are being staked, use all this stuff, & I expect they think it helps. Maybe it does.

I wonder how many poker players - 99% of them beng recreational, despite what they may aspire to be - really enjoy poker these days?

Some amazing guff in this (American) report about Facebook, too. I simply don't buy some of this. Busiest time on FB is 3pm ET? No way!

http://mashable.com/2010/10/28/facebook-activity-study/

Recently I bumped into someone I hadn't seen for over 25 years.

It was good to catch up and hear what has happened to him in the intervening years.

But really, we have nothing in common and no reason to keep in touch, losing touch with him was natural.

But read Shaniacs blog http://shaniaconline.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html and he makes an excellent point. "The main thing that fascinates me about Facebook, though, is that young people will never get to experience the dynamic of NOT being in touch with people from one's childhood."

With fb and twitter and blah de blah you don't really have the option of losing touch.

3 things Keith, the first is easy - I have not forgotten your latest PM (Bet sizes....) & I'll reply later today. I'm compiling some evidence for you, which may in fact surprise you.

The second thing is Twitter, in which I see daily evidence of your Tweets, & clearly it's a platform you enjoy. Aside from your Tweets to & from Miss C, which are so insightful & intriguing to us outsiders - it's like listening in on a private convo where you just hear statches of the convo! - you seem to "think out loud" a lot in your tweets about all manner of stuff, though mostly football & betting.

As a stereotype, I cannot imagine anyone less likely to be a Tweeter. So what is it's attraction to you? And before you ask, mine is work-inspired, no more, no less. I'd switch off Facebook the very second I give up work, never to go near it again, but almost certainly I'd retain Twitter, which I find far more satisfying. Will it last, or do a "MySpace" & disappear up it's own hype-filled arse? Time will tell, & maybe not long, these fads rise & fall amazingly quickly these days.

And lastly - how has Jake taken to School? How did he handle being regularly parted from Mum & Dad for the first time? Bawl his eyes out, or could not wait to get the fairy wheels off?

I like the immediacy of twitter. The banter is good, often with people I've never met. And the opportunity to pick the brains of some fascinating people is too juicy an opportunity to miss. Last week I was asking to Roger Charlton how he picks jockeys when he has a horse running in France or the USA. Imagine the response if I collared him at the races and asked him the same questions. He would called security to drag me away!

No doubt I will tire of twitter. I don't like facebook and haven't updated that in months. but for now I'll carry on while it amuses me.

Jake absolutely loves school. We must pat ourselves on the backs a little because we had the choice of about 5 local village schools and we chose the one which is furthest away. It's a methodist school, would you believe? They don't yet know what I do for a living, and I doubt I'll be invited in to describe what I do to the kids! But the class sizes are tiny (11 in Jake's class) and it means the children get alot of personal attention. I don't know how teachers cope with 30+ in a class. It would be easy for a shy kid (and Jake certaining veers towards shy in a big group) to get lost amongst the masses.

And his teacher, Miss O'Hare, is just fantastic. She keeps a diary of each chids achievements and progress and updates it weekly. She gets parents to help with the class and is eager to know what the children are doing at home to coordinate it with learning at school. For example we took Jake to the Jorvik centre in York during half term and on learning that, she had a day talking about Vikings and Britain in past times.

And Jake is just thriving, he can't wait to go to school in the mornings and he's doing just great. He is doing maths with a class of kids 2 years older than him!

I look forward to the PM, but I won't hold my breath!
