Gillette Cup 1962 became the Nat West mid 70s. 60 overs, now 50

Benson and Hedges began late 60s, 55 overs. Until mid 2000s

John Player League early 1970s to now, 40 overs. Was Sundays now shoehorned into the schedule whenever under various brandings

three competitions for One dayers, domestically until the advent of 2020

now

20-20

40 over comp in two divisions

Nat West, regionalised til quarters

Trust you to know all that off pat.

Bet you never even googled it!

No sir, I know my cricket stats. I used as a kid get taken to the oval by grandparents. This would be mid 70s. I would be set challenges from the Playfair cricket annual and the members would bet against my grandad that I wouldn't know a stat from the book. If I knew it, my grandad won the £1/£5 whatever

I usually knew, and kept getting taken to the cricket in the summer holidays

Pat Pocock, Robin Jackman, the fearsome Sylvester Clarke, Intikhab etc

Still go nuts at cricket stats to this day

Why does that so not surprise me?

Tighty, I love you.

Tikay, your thoughts on what is happening in Libya, Gaddafi, and the UK's relationship with a barbaric dictator who seems to have a face made from plasticine?

Not much, really, it does not greatly fascinate me, though this "booting out the Dictators" thing seems to have gone viral, & there's no knowing where it when it may end.

It was com to listen to the Politicians re-aligning theirselves this morning so as to get on message, though. Yesterday he was a tactical ally, today he's a tyrant.

The Media are worse, same thing, but now, all of a sudden, they are all putting the boot in. Where have they been the last 30 years?

I think it's rather rude to describe him as "looking like plasticine". Better to just shoot him, really.  I wonder what would happen if he did pop off overnight?

Name me the next Dictatorship to fall. When does Central Africa get started? How is Mugabe these days?

I read an interesting article (I'll dig out the link) about the role the media has played in these 'revolutions'.  There are some very similar situations in other countries in Africa (Central Africa in particular as you mentioned) with the people uprising, but being knocked back down again by the forces of brutal dictators.  It seems that without the mass international media exposure these uprisings might lack the oxygen to turn into full-bloodied revolutions like we've seen elsewhere.

Of course, there are other reasons too.

As for Gaddafi, he said he would rather be a martyr to the cause (whatever cause that is) than step down.  I'm sure there are plenty who have been victim to his brutal rule that would happily oblige.

When one day cricket started, 1962 Gillette Cup, I think Sussex won it in the final scoring 172-5 off 60 with Ted Dexter scoring the runs

It was only post Packer, and the advent of the World Cup in 75 that the game became distinct

I too far prefer Test Cricket, or indeed County cricket

When I go to watch county cricket, I reckon there are less than 10 of us sub 60 years old in a midweek crowd.

How much is it to get in on an average wednesday in June to see some county stuff?

£10ish, possibly £15

When I was a kid I often went to Hampshire or Kent Championship home games, when the family visted either of my set of grandparents during the summer holidays.

Haven't been to a game for over 30 years, will definitely rectify this in the summer and go to a Durham game.

Fantastic memories watching Malcolm Marshall, Gordon Greenidge, Derek Underwood, Asif Iqbal etc

Ah...the good old days of turning up at Dean Park Bournemouth to watch Hampshire.
First ever job....wandering the ground selling scorecards.Well chuffed to make a few quid as a kid, which paid for the bus/drinks/ ice cream. Grin

Who can forget? - or would want to forget? - Bumble, in that famous One Day Final? So yes, in it's place, it's OK.

Don't really want to pick holes in your great selection of sporting moments! And as a Lancastrian I may be embarrassing myself here if I'm overlooking something - but wonder if you mean David Hughes, rather than Lloyd, in the Gillette Cup semi-final in the dark...

Anyway, pretty amazing scenes for a county game, looking at it now - and plenty of the crowd well under the age of 60, watching a full 120 overs in a day...

Great clip, thanks for posting.

Mike Proctor bowling a bouncer to Jack Simmonds in darkness. No helmets in those days.

He could have killed Jack!

You have the start dates of the John Player & B&H mixed up I believe Rich.

My mum has always worked within advertising and media companies.

The company she worked for longest was called McCann-Erickson. Her boss was the chairman of the company and Denis, who was on the payroll as an ambassador used to come and sit with my mum and have a coffee and a chat. They became quite good friends and my mum used to talk about him, tell us his stories. Quite a remarkable man. She went to his memorial service at Westminster Abbey and I think several of the people on your list were there too.

BBC Test Match Special's Geoff Boycott in Delhi today

"The security people tried to take my sandwiches away from me today - I can't eat curries because of the spices in them from when I had [throat] cancer. I had to speak to their superior, who was a brigadier or a general or something. They took my plastic fork and knife from me too."
