'Notify a job' is horrid. I don't think that notify can take a direct object like that in that mood.

Pretty standard "DWPspeak" tbh

Have you caught any of the 1st test between Pakistan and England?

What do you think of them having to play in an empty stadium in Dubai.

Shouldn't it be 'notify of a job'?

If not we're actually trying to notify the job itself which of course won't understand the notification because it's a job and has no eyes, ears or a brain to operate them.

basically the particular meaning of 'to notify' that's being used here has an almost identical meaning to the verb 'to announce'

If I'm not mistaken this picture was taken by a guy called Kevin Carter who had a song written about him by the Manic Street Preachers

I need help from punctuation geeks. how do we make this ambiguous statement-

I think I have read more books about this dreadful character than anyone else.

read as either

"I think I have read more books about this dreadful character than about anyone else"

or

"I think I have read more books about this dreadful character than anyone else has"

just by adding punctuation but leaving the same words in the same order?

everything I try looks slightly wrong

Wouldn't have thought you could do it with punctuation. I'd italicise 'this'.

That's correct.  Haunting photo.

Notify taking the direct object is what made it appear strange to me.  Is it a more archaic use of the verb?  The DWP use it, but I can't find too many more examples on Google: http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=%22notify+a+job%22

Thank you for the help with my apalling grammatical construction.

The sentence is so bad it is beyond redemption, but perhaps this will have to do for now, as an attempt to turn my pigs ear into a pigs arse.

I think I have read more books about this dreadful character than anyone else.

I think I have read more books about this dreadful character than anyone else has.

Still pretty dreadful, though. Oh, the shame.

Good to see Gatters has his full team on the case, though.

Have you caught any of the 1st test between Pakistan and England?

What do you think of them having to play in an empty stadium in Dubai.

Been watching it, on & off, most of the day. A perk of working at Sky is that we each have a TV on our desks, so I can either watch myself, on 865, or cricket in an empty stadium.

I don't much like it, in truth, & cannot get in the least revved up. Cricket is not going down a route I much like. County Cricket, so wonderfully English, & 5 day Tests at established venues, with the "sold out" signs up, is all I seek.

Sadly, but inevitably, cricket has sold out, to the Gods of money, & TV.

I'm sure they will make it work, & I'm not exactly their target audience. So be it.

It remains on my bucket list to watch a full series of Test Cricket in England, every last ball of it. Soon, I will.

I gather even the established Test venues in England now have to "bid" for the right to stage Tests. Bleurgh. Give me Tests at Lords, The Oval, Trent Bridge, Headingley, & Edgbaston, that'll do just nicely, thank you. Ain't ever gonna happen again though.

I used to be chastised by a famous poker pesonality for being what he described as "nicey-wicey". Yup, guilty, unashamedly, I've had my fill of aggro & grief, I'm on the lovely & peaceful downhill run to the finishing line now.

So I rather liked this thread, started by Evil Pie, as an antidote to all those dreadful "Why I hate/things that piss me off" threads, which I'm not ashamed to say I have never once viewed.

 http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=56500.0

Enjoy.

PS - I wanted to post a photo that summed up "nice", & image searched it on bing, instead of google, which is my usual image site. Don't go there, it's too horrible.

I think it's good that Pakistan have a way of continuing to have home games even if tours to their country aren't possible.
