Joking aside, people only read my diary to see what Tony has posted on there.

On the contrary, I'm only reading this now because it said last post by RED DOG

Don't be silly Irene, this is my Diary, not Vegas and the Skidmarks.

So, you have pneumonia, wtf? You sounded absolutely dreadful on the phone. Wrap up, pneumonia can be well serious at your age. Anyway, you gotta get better, we are all looking forward to seeing you at Luton next weekend. It should be, umm, super super epic.

Get well soon girlie.

At 1.30 today, these two clash. Here, in advance, is a photo which predicts the future, because, for sure - or, as we kidz say - fo so - ONE of them will be uppity.

You have to decide, which of the two will be most angry today?

As a semi-neutral, though with a mild liking for Arsenal, I just think that the Premier League is such a fantastic product, & we are lucky to have it, warts & all.

And these two guys? Incredible respect for them both, despite both of them suffering occasionally from myopia.

Between them, they have managed their 2 clubs for some 40 years - Sir Alex has been at Man Utd 10 years longer than Arsene @ Arsenal, and in an age where 3 defeats on the bounce usually spells "sack", & football fans & Boardrooms are so fickle & short-sighted, that's quite something. Arsene is 62, Sir Alex is 70. Incredible, & much respect to both of them.

One of THE great world records, Bob Beaman, 1968, setting a mark that was not to be beaten for 23 years.

Mike Powell 1991 World Championships. I really wanted to let it go, but the pedant in me wouldn't, sigh.

Was just thinking about this again and a quick check on wikipedia reveals that Powell record still stands 21 years later.

Even more remarkably Beamon's jump is the still 2nd all time, given the advances in athletic achievement in the last 40 years that is amazing to me.

The more I think about that, the more freakish both records seem. To be fair, Beaman was "assisted" by altitude, but not to an extent that can be rationally explained.

I watched the Beaman jump, live on TV, & he just seemed to float, though I never saw the Miller leap.

I can't think of another "regular" Event where a mark set 40 years ago has only been beaten once since.

All the modern coaching, training camps, dietary supplements, science based coaching, & still the records stand intact.

A statistical freak if ever there was one.

Here's how Wiki describes Beaman's prodigious effort.

On October 18 at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Beamon set a world record for the long jump with a jump of 8.90 m (29 ft. 2½ in.), bettering the existing record by 55 cm (21¾ in.). When the announcer called out the distance for the jump, Beamon — unfamiliar with metric measurements — wasn't affected by it.[3] When his teammate and coach Ralph Boston told him that he broke the world record by nearly 2 feet, an astonished Beamon collapsed to his knees and placed his hands over his face in shock. In one of the more enduring images of the games, his competitors then helped him to his feet.[4] One journalist called Beamon "the man who saw lightning".[citation needed] Sports journalist Dick Schaap wrote a book about the leap, The Perfect Jump. Prior to Beamon’s jump, the world record had been broken thirteen times since 1901, with an average increase of 6 cm (2½ in) and the largest increase being 15 cm (6 in). Beamon's record stood for 23 years until Mike Powell broke it in 1991.

The defending Olympic champion, Lynn Davies of Great Britain, told Beamon, "You have destroyed this event", and in sports jargon, a new adjective — Beamonesque — came into use to describe spectacular feats.[5] Beamon landed his jump near the far end of the sand pit but the optical device which had been installed to measure jump distances was not designed to measure a jump of such length. This forced the officials to measure the jump manually which added to the jump's aura. Shortly after Beamon's jump a major rainstorm blew through making it more difficult for his competitors to try to match Beamon's feat. None were able to do so. Klaus Beer finished second with a jump of 8.19 m.

In making his record jump, Beamon enjoyed a number of advantageous environmental factors.[6] At an altitude of 2240 m (7349 ft), Mexico City's air had less resistance than air would have at sea level. This allows runners to run faster and jumpers to jump farther. In addition to Beamon's record, world records were broken in most of the sprinting and jumping events at the 1968 Olympic Games. Beamon also benefited from a trailing wind of 2 meters per second on his jump, the maximum allowable for record purposes. It has been estimated that the trail wind and altitude may have improved Beamon's long jump distance by 31 cm (12.2 inches).[6] During the same hour Lee Evans set the world record for 400 metres that lasted for almost 20 years.

I watched a replay on 865 last night with Mr Rutter and thought he was very very good. I don't normally rate analysers (sp?) but thought this young man was amongst the best I've listened to.

Geo

Thanks Geo, I will pass that on.

He is a splendid young man, & he articulates his thoughts so well. His baby Bro, Tom, has just qualified as a Doctor, you know. Proper Doctor, healing the sick & all that. His first Posting is at Lincoln A & E, which sounds a bit odd, I can barely imagine an accident in Lincoln, they just grow potatoes & parsnips out there, & play the ukelele.

Stu's next Show will have as Guests Paul Jackson & Karl Tall Bloke Mahrenholz. Not bad for an Encore, eh?

Siiiigh

Think I might start a table between yourself, Tom, Kinboshi and Andrew to determine who creates the most groanage.

Geo

Tom will win that by a landslide, he's so bad.

Anyway, I had to slip that Encore spam in, as Greeky had a bad day yesterday, with all that "job or no job" counselling by all us "experts", the fella must have been dizzy by the time he read it all.

I loved it. The feedback, comments and questions are the best thing about these diaries.

Sometimes I enjoy writing but not as much as some other diary'ers here. I just like the interaction in all its forms.

Same here, Mr Cos.

It's a bit of a self-fulfilling/defeating prophecy thingie really. When we "Diary" (note it's a verb now...), we want feedback, & interaction, we want people to be interested in what we write - we do. And we feel we should reply to the feedback, it's impolite not to, but whilst answering feedback, & interacting, it slows the flow of new stuff. Difficult to reconcile the two, both are essential in a decent Diary, imo, & all the blonde Diaries work on the same principle, I think.

I know not everyone thinks the blonde Diaries are a good thing, & thats fair enough, but I think they are excellent, & I try to read them all. Even the Sporadic SkidMark & Bonfire Chronicles.

One of my NYE's was to either pack up writing my Diary, or write & manage it better. I have a hankering to do some writing after I get canned next door, maybe even a book, I don't 'arf have some stories to tell, some nice, some not so, but a regular guy who had an amazingly fortunate life.

But the reality is, I don't write anywhere well enough to do it "properly", so I have determined to try & get better at the writing thing.

My vocab is way too limited. I use, for example, "splendid", "excellent", terrific", "amazing", "astonishing", way too often, so now, with words like that, I try to find alternatives, invest a little time & effort in improving my vocab range. Sometimes, in doing so, I make a pratt of myself - "enjoin" was a great example - but I can handle a bit of mocking, if the end result is that I write better. Using these "new" (to me) words is not showing off, trying to be a smartarse, it is not. Read any half-decent book, & look at the range of words used, the skill in constructing sentences well, & we - or I - suddenly feel so inadequate.

Much respect to you, Cos, & to all the other Diaryists here, I love them.

Somrtimes, usually once or twice a year, we burn out, get writers block, & the Diary goes dormant for a few weeks or even months, & I can't seem to stop that happening. So, I've set myself some Diary targets this year. So far, targets all met, but as it is only mid January, I have a way to go yet. Don't bet against me, unless you can get 3/1 though.

Pardon me if I make a rare exception & briefly mention, umm, poker. It's not normal on this Diary, but the last remaining vestiges of the audience on Tom's Diary are now homeless, looking for something to read, as Tom's Diary has drifted from skid marks into that one subject which makes so much noise, but only a very few can be arsed to read - religion. He'll be doing football next, as he scrambles for readers. So, a window of opportunity for me.

Went to Luton last night for the £100, sadly, the £5,000 overlay was missed by a whopping £1,600. Whoop if you like, but overlay is not the value you think it is, & it will end in tears.

I was trundling along nicely, then this weird hand went off.

Me - I raised up round the back on a 6 handed table with   and get one customer, who pretty much calls any bet.

Flop -

Nice.

Check call.

I liked the turn.....

I bet now, he pops it up, I just dwell flat, theatrically. Got him.

River, bugger, not sure I like this so much.....

I bet, now he snap jams!

Now I really don't like this so much now. He just flatted my pre-flop rsise, so 10-10 is out, 4-4 maybe? More likely, surely, a big ace, A-K, A-Q maybe, though that would mean the case ace just rivered. Anyway, there was 22,000 in the middle at 100-200, & I now only had 7,000 behind, & eventually I called, he can have lots of hands I beat here, though I have a feeling it is a shocking call. He can't possibly have A-J, of course.

He had A-J. I am so bad.

Re-entered, & cruised to the Final. I opened with A-Q, Chandra jams for sixty trillion, I look him up, as his range here is massive, & I only have 22 bigs. He flips 2 red nines. Flop A-Q-9, off to the DC game we go.

The DC was a pretty bad table to play, no value at all, none whatsoever, but I so love playing it, so I pulled up £500 & decided to indulge for an hour.

It as £2 £2, & almost the first hand I played, (6 card hi-lo) I flopped a Royal, (& rivered a redundant house!) holding   on a flop of

I played it stunningly well, & collected a pot of exactly £8, of which £2 was my blind.

I dribbled off about £100 then, just playing real bad & loose, I just fancied splashing around for an hour.

Then it happened, & "the hand" occurred.

We are playing 6 card Hi-Li, & I flop the nuts (flop 7-8-10) with extensions, & A-4 for a bad low draw. I bet out & got 2 callers, one of whom (Jim, aka 77Dave) had the nut flush draw.

The turn comes a 3, & the river a real absolute miracle 2, (no hearts, wiiii), to give me nut-nut. Nice.

There is a few hundred in the middle by now, still 3 way, & I am determined not to lose my customers.

I bet, I think, £120, Jim flats the £120, now Simon wants to take off, & pots it!

I don't do any theatricals, I just snap him off & call al-in. Lovely.

But now Jim goes in the tank, he looks like he is hating life. Jim really understands Hi-Lo, & I respect his game, but I knew he was not liking life here. He asks to see exactly what is in the pot (it is PL), I think there was about a grand in by now, & after a very long tank, sigh calls.

I say "nut nut", Simon declares nut low, & so does Jim - all three of us held A-4, on a turn & river of 2-3!

MBN to be me, & I scoop the high, & chop the low 3 ways.

So, an evenings Luton fun, & a little profit, despite the fact I played pretty badly in the DC.

OK, no more talk of poker. I promise.

Absolutely hated this hand from start to finish. The 2 of the river stopped me from getting 1/2 of the pot but i still had the A4 for nut low. It was Alan in the pot with us and I'm just glad that i managed to 3/4 him in the side pot to make all of my river call money back. With the way the hand went I'm happy at losing only just over a £100 in the pot all told. Dealers always love splitting pots into 1/6s esp after doing 3/4 in the side pot.

Thanks Jim.

Sorry, yes, Alan, not Simon. I always call him Simon, for some weird reason.

That other charcter fascinated me - "Marco" was it, the Chinese-Italian guy? What a character! Liked him immensely.

He dresses very hip & cool, but it must have been a shock to his system to be turned away from Luton G for wearing "improper" shoes. Which cost, I gather, £600.

His trousers intrigued, too. What price all the kidz are wearing them soon?

I was so curious about them, that I went googling, & found out they are called "drop crotch trousers" (!!), & his "dropped crotch" was beneath his knees!

Here's dear Robbie in "dropped crotch" strides, the lite version. You read it here first, everyone will be wearing them soon. Imagine Mr M wearing those, eh?
