The Royal Family - the Queen and Prince William in particular - are a credit to the nation and it will be a very sad day for the country when we do go republic (even tho we essentially are now, as the Royal Family has no real power).

So they are heads of state already. If that was the case and Buck palace et al were still iconic tourist attractions the tourists will still visit them.

Queen works harder than anyone I know.
She instils a sense of national pride, earns us a fortune in tourism & merchandising, and helps to maintain Great Britain's place on the scale of global awareness.
Without the Monarchy, Great Britain would soon become just another European country.
There are 11 other monarchies in Europe.
The Queen has an estimated wealth of £300 million yet we pay everything for her despite being skint. Get rid.
Sandy
Not gonna happen in your lifetime bud. Sounds like you will be stuck with her in the unlikely event Scotland get independence too
I know. I doubt we'll get independence either. I'm neutral on this though.

Don't be so daft, she is tremendous value for money and the returns both tangible and in profile exceed her cost annually many times over
Next you'll be wanting Scotland independent, or posting puerile anti Rangers pictures
Neutral on independence.
Scotland gets it's tourism because of golf, architecture and scenery. Very little because of the royals. There may be a small amount of business deals because of them but mostly it's because the firms offer a good deal in terms of money or skills or both.
I doubt most of the rest of UK outside London is any different. Can't see the royals drawing much to Kent, Cumbria or North Wales

Don't forget a head of state or president is still going to cost the country big bucks. All the security and travel and official functions will still run into millions of pounds of taxpayer cash every year. Not only that but a head of state voted in only gets 4 years before making way for somebody else. That chopping and changing every few years isn't going to be sufficient time for a president to become greatly proficient in the job or to garner a stellar global reputation. By comparison the Queen has been mastering the job for 60 years. This not only gives her people a stability and a sense of themselves in what is a turbulent world but it also gives her a certain prestige and esteem amongst other world leaders which simply couldn't be replicated in a short presidential term.

Countries have a PM and a head of state. Or are you saying scrap the monarchy and crown people like Gordon Brown or Ed Miliband our head of state? Err no thanks.

I would sooner see us get rid of politicians and let the queen make the decisions.

Imagine if it was smug Tony Blair's face instead? I would find money distasteful and that would be weird. Really don't want to be licking Gordon Brown's face everytime I post a letter either.

The monarchy is a good thing, because the alternative (an elected head of state who would just end up being some politician) is far worse.
...
This
And the cost would be higher as not only would we have the cost of an extra set of elections every 4/5/.... years, but also politicians will always inflate the money they can earn (because they are elected officials) as opposed to the Royal family who are trying to keep under control how much they cost (which is a difficult figure to work out - but however much it is, it's not that much). So it would start off costing more and keep on getting more and more expensive.

Be interesting to compare the total costs of looking after all the living US ex presidents to the cost of the Royal Family here. The costs for politicians don't stop when they leave their post obv
