In that shot of ''Jersey Red'', looks like he's playing a 'masse' shot, while looking up exactly how it got its name I found this diagram for 1893, cool eh.
If you can locate any photos of Jersey Red, I’d love to see them.
His “real” name was Jack Breit, which he had shortened from Jack Bretikopf, supposedly so his name would better fit onto the billboards advertising his appearances.
Surprised there is no Wiki page for him. In searching, I did find a “Jack Brett”, who was a motorcycle racer in the 50’s, & I’m surprised I had not heard of him, as I followed the sport intensively in my youth.
I think my memory card is full.
This
sort of thing.
Too good, thank you, what evocative photos!
That Jack Breit (Jersey Red) looks a bit mean.
I'm not sure how they are doing those masse shots (photo # 2 & #14) without even bridging to steady their lower hand.
Great photographs, thank you.

Old School Hustlers
Superb, thank you. That annual tournament featured heavily in the book I mentioned.
Loved "travelling light" (= skinto), & "hustling & scuffling".

I bet you looked "a bit mean" when you were in your early eighties too.

thoughts on this Minnesota fats interview?
Oh dear, exaggaratements!
Played in front of 350,000 people.......hmm.
I know a few poker players who are equally deluded.
I guess we are all different, but humility is so much more endearing than arrogance, especially when the latter is so misplaced, as it generally is. Genius & humility are rare bedfellows, too.
Great find though, & I'm glad I watched it. Another piece of the jigsaw slots into place.

I hate kids. I hate animals slightly more.
Well, as far as photography goes. Stay ******* still! They make shutter speed the overriding concern, and in modest light it gets exasperating.
Those are good efforts Tony, wp. More tits please!

Nice photo, but I think you're supposed to take the balls out of the string bags...
Not so sure on this - my reasoning being is the green nylon helps to hold the balls together better when it rains? One good summer shower/storm and they would surely be washed all over the ground beneath. Well I always left my string bags on, ahem.

Enough with the double intendres Mum, you are better than that!
It is - to me - a big problem with photographing birds, & blue tits especially, as they do not stay still for a nanasecond, real perpetual motion thingies.
The "modest light" - yes, fair comment, I took the shots from inside the house, in poor light. Light seems to be so important to photo quality.
Down by the side of the Thames, in bright light, the photos are a zilllion times better, imo.
I took several hundred shots of aeroplanes coming in to land @ Heathrow on Sunday. When I got home & looked at them, not one included the whole 'plane, that is SO hard to get right.
Still, its good to be utterly useless at something, it gives me something to aim for, to try & do better.
If you will, just the once more, pardon my swan fixation, I think these were a
little
better - because they move much more slowly, & better light I suppose.

Tikay,
Did you see the Michael Portello train trip program? I guess was talked about previously in the thread, I've probably missed it.
Yes. I adore Portillo. Hated him as an active Politician, of course, but he is A+ TV now, he has a great TV voice, & a certain air of
gravitas
.
None of the vainglorious stuff (see, got the word in!), with great humility, & very self deprecating now.
One of the people I most enjoy listening to & watching.
Please God he never dumbs down & does Celebrity Dancing or whatever he is a national treasure.
I hope not too but with the shirts & jackets he wore, well you have to wonder. Great series though.
Sharon - great to see you here, you are a Lady of fine taste.
Hope all is well in Supernova land.
The Portillo reminder enables me to post something which, on the geek-scale, must be at least 8.9 - the book Mr Portillo is seen holding is "Bradshaw's Tourist Handbook".
Bradshaw was a really special man, he died over 150 years ago, but he changed peoples lives for the better via the introduction of - wait for it - printed railway timetables, see....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Bradshaw
Tighty will show interest, Mere will probably be able to recite the contents of Bradshaw's missives from memory, & everyone else will politely move on.
Ty Tony - obviously I'm an avid lurker but it's nearly Springwatch time on the Beeb and something kicked me out of hibernation, maybe it was the mention of having a bit of Chompy for 7p + postage, I'm not sure.

From the RSPB site
http://www.rspb.org.uk/advice/helpingbirds/feeding/whatfood/index.aspx
If they are sold in nylon mesh bags, always remove the bag before putting the fat ball out – the soft mesh can trap and injure birds.

I may have a bet for you later on the tits for tikay thread as there's some particularly good dogging tonight in Wimbledon.

I mentioned some recent reading yesterday, but was scant on detail. Memory issues.
The cricket book, light, but extremely funny, was "And God Created Cricket".
The author, who I think I described rather disparagingly as "Simon someone" was none other than the ubiquitous Simon Hughes. He really is a most accomplished writer, & many will remember him for his Cricket reports from the back of an OB trailer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Hughes_(commentator
)
He has a brother by the name of "Bettany", a name I have never heard before, but Bettany took a far less interesting course in life - he was a historian.
Simon's book is a great read, it will barely take a day, but it would be a day well invested.
Watched this on BBC4 last night, really enjoyed it. Showed how brutal a game it was when these guys took to the field.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01cqp77/Storyville_20112012_Fire_in_Babylon/
"Documentary telling the story of how the West Indies cricket team triumphed over its colonial masters through the achievements of one of the most gifted sides in sporting history."
Soundtrack was good too.

I would say he has had a very interesting life from the look of him:
