I
think
this was a cormorant. It could be argued that the photo is sub-optimal, to be fair. No no, it is.

A photo? I thought it was a charcoal drawing.

Not a bad photo at all - dare I say it, quite artistic. And clearly a cormorant.

Any idea what that stringy-hangy-down bit is on the back of the Heron's head?

Bingo!
Does anyone know what function that sort of feathery-string thing behind it's head serves? And exactly what sort of Heron this is?

It is a Grey heron
An old fisherman i use to know, before an important fishing match he would shoot an heron, lightly boil its legs and
use the water to mix his ground bait, says the odour from the herons legs acted as a magnet to the fish.
He was a successful fisherman

The sarcasm about your view of art was missed then?
No idea why the heron (lots of different species of herons) have the plumes at the back of their heads. Can't find an explanation either.

<3 the heron pics, really really <3 them!!!
I defo said this before on this diary but as a Kid I used to go stay with my great aunt in Alnwick and we spent hours and hours trying to show me a Heron, in about 10 visit's we never saw one and each time I was more excited than the previous time! My Great aunt (now 92!) has finally left her home to move to a nursing home and she said to me that one of her biggest regrets is that she'll never get to see me see my first heron
Still great memories though.

If she is still up to it, you can still put that right? (with a bit of co-operation from a local heron..)

They appear to be only used in courtship and juvenile herons don't have them so there may be some truth in that.

No worries Phil, always good to hear from you. Just quit with the Euriovision tips though, right? Even MANTIS had me over a barrel. The mind truly boggles at that thought.
The Spag Bol was wicked.
Just off for a latte on the beach, then when I get back, LOTS of photos will be uploaded. Sorry......
I tried to use "Imageshack" (for uploading photos) last night, as Tom cannot see my photos when I use "Tinypic", but Imageschack did not work, it wanted me to downsize all the photos. I can't do that, I have scores of them.
Not sure what to try next. Tinypic - which has a HORRENDOUS homepage - nonetheless works for me.
Ideas, anyone?
