Great photo!
More "Family at work" stuff itt please.
Any advance on a winkle picker maker?
I must confess to being a bit jealous when you find those old photos and articles about your dad Tony as I have searched in vain for any mention of my old boy although he too had his moments as they say.
My dad played table-tennis to a very high standard as I'm sure that I've told you a few times, he was an England international between the wars during the 1930's and was a team-mate of Fred Perry who was not only Wimbledon lawn-tennis champion but also simultaneously the England #1 at table-tennis which is pretty amazing.
Table-tennis was a huge sport at that time and was dominated by the Hungarians and particularly by one man, Victor Barna who was virtually in a class of his own and won the world championship many times. Those world championships were held in London in 1935 and my dad managed to make it into the quarter-finals that year where he ran into Barna who knocked him out in straight games.
My dad was actually using an autographed "Barna bat" for that match which he gave to me but I must have bragged about it too much at school and some bugger stole it.
Anyhow that's enough digression; the point is that despite my best efforts I can find no record of that 1935 world championships apart from the winners of all of the events and there is no mention of my dad or any pictures although I do have one here which I suspect is most of those guys as I'm sure one of them is Barna who I met once when I was in short trousers.
My dad was Harry Shalson but he had a cousin of exactly the same name and a very similar age who was a fairly well known singer at that time and he is the one who comes up on any simple searches via google. I have no idea how to make any further searches as my techno-skills are somewhat limited but would be overjoyed if anyone could shed any further light on the subject.
That is an incredible Post, Ralph.
I hope my friend hector62 might come up with something, as he did for me yesterday.
Little tale.
I mentioned my Dad on the Tips for tikay thread, I can't recall the context, but I said I'd give a free £25 bet to anyone who could find that video.
Anyway, hector found it, & I was made up.
So, I wrote to him & doubled the "reward", to a £50 free bet, by way of some sort of tangible "thank you".
He refused to accept a penny, he said he believed in karma, & that karma would look after him.
He then - this was last night - won an Omaha Hi-Lo Tourney last night, from over 600 runners!
And today, he came up with THE weirdest bet - a particular player to be, in effect, Man of the Match in the RL Challenge Cup Final. And he nailed that, too!
I'm pretty sure karma is in the mind, but you never know......
