I have watched about 16 of the episodes so far

Let us know when you've finished it - to make sure we don't start discussing the result without spoiling the ending for you.

A propos of not very much, I watched a few minutes of an old Minder episode this afternoon and googled the wonderful George Cole (he is still with us, if you were unsure as I was)
Found out he had a pretty interesting and unusual early life.

Minder with Waterman or t'other Terry?

Brilliant show.

Lol, remind's me of the time I borrowed the film Shawshank Redemption from a mate and as he handed it over he tipped me a wink and said 'keep an eye on the picture' I watched about 40 mins and guessed what would happen.

A guy claims to have broken the world record yesterday for surfing the biggest wave ever ridden, off the coast of Portugal, of all places, though it it seems to be a surfers paradise.

It is claimed the wave was 30 metres tall, though I have no idea how they measure or verify that.

I do know that bloke must be nuts.

Apparently they take measurements from his shin bone and his crouching height.

Strangely enough I have been watching The world at war Tony, do you remember it, was a 1973-74 series on ITV?

According to Wiki on completion it was the most expensive TV series ever made.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World_at_War

I am ashamed to say I know so little about any of the world war's and this series is amazing, there are 11 discs in the box set, top value at under 30 quid. I have watched about 16 of the episodes so far, I was amazed today watching an episode on the battle for Leningrad that 4,000 people a day died in the city in January 1941.

There have been some incredible stories so far, the battle for Stalingrad was another huge victory by Russia against the odds. It evolved into a kind of chess game with the Russians desperately trying to hold out thru the summer until the Russian winter kicked in and the Germans were so badly under prepared for that it gave the Russian's a huge edge. Hitler refused to let his troops that were surrounded in Stalingrad surrender so it got so bad in the later stages the troops were eating raw dead animals.

It's a pretty humbling feeling watching it esp when you come from knowing so little of the war as I do.

If you buy one DVD I recommend this.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/World-At-War-Ultimate-Restored/dp/B003IN7YQE/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1359479561&sr=1-1

I used to watch those shows Phil, every one of them, but back then, the enormity of the tragedies never sunk in.

For the last 10 years or so, more books, TV shows, & newspaper column inches, have been devoted - & rightly so - to the World Trade Centre 9/11 disaster than about all other disasters combined. Nearly 3,000 souls perished on that day. And now we are reminded that back in WWII, over 4,000 died in a single day in Leningrad. Tom also Posted a list of modern genocides a few days ago, where the numbers were so big that some had 2 commas.

The Trade Centre & 9/11 deaths were awful, obscenely so, but the vast majority died instantly. In the Concentration Camps, not so much.

Perspective is a very peculiar thing.

Sounds to me to be code for "we guessed".

Wow, George Cole, what an actor!

He was in so much stuff, must have been in hundreds of films & TV shows, including many Ealing comedies.

I always felt he should have played the role of Charlie Endall in Budgie. I'll cut your bloody hands off Son.

Minder, whilst dated, is timeless.

Cole had a lead role in that fabulous series "Blott on the Landscape", wish I could watch that again, it was magnificent.

Incredibly, he was overshadowed by David Suchet, who absolutely owned the series with a magnificent piece of acting.
