I wish I'd discovered him when I was 20

If you had done so, & squirrelled away a few shares in Berkshire Hathaway, you'd be a very rich man indeed now.

Their Class A  shares closed last night at $162,950.....EACH.

In the period 2000 - 2010 they increased in value by 76%, against a broad fall in the S & P of 11%.

The book value of BH has increased by an average of 20% per year for the last 48 years.

By an odd coincidence, as Aaron raised the topic last night, today, in Omaha Nebraska, is the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholders Meeting, expected to be attended by over 20,000 "fans".

And Mr Buffett's salary? $100,000 per annum. And he does not take any other salary payment from BH, or share dividends.

Good job his shares are worth $53bn then.

His twitter even got a #FF from Obama, the annual meeting is this weekend so the press will be fawning all over him as usual. Not that he doesn't deserve it - giving away all his money and upsetting republicans by saying that taxes on the rich are too low makes him a great guy. The press coverage is way too sycophantic though.

I knew a Warren Buffett question would get you on a roll.

I'm definitely going to get The Snowball and his two essay collection books.

Then it's just a long wait until your book comes out...

Well if you plan to get his Essays AND Snowball, then read the Essays first.

They are all Buffet-isms, business, really incredible insights into the man.

Snowball is much wider, & includes crap real life stuff, you know, love, children, all that nonsense. Part of the man, so a must read, but love & all that stuff is not exactly page-turning stuff.

I try to buy stock in businesses that are so wonderful that an idiot can run them. Because sooner or later, one will.

Definitely good for charity, as he has pledged to leave most of it to Charity. He says he only wants to leave his children enough to do something, but not so much they they can do nothing.

He famously fell out, publically, with one of his nieces who felt she had an entitlement to some of his riches when he died. He completely ostracised her, in fact.

The Media certainly do adore him, he is one of a kind, but in an age where there is so much bad news, & negativity, I'm not sure I see why credit where credit is due is such a bad thing, is it?

Guilty as charged here, I do sort of idolise him for a variety of reasons, but he seems a far better role model than many.

I think its no bad thing to marvel at what he has achieved, though I do agree that the praise can get a little sickly at times.

I watched The Masters Golf previews this year, & that is a truly wonderful Event, but the Media fawning nearly made me throw up, so I do get your point.

Interesting how we all see such things from different perspectives.

So now you've finished your diet, I wonder if you would mind talking us through your modus operandi ?

I know that basically you just limit your calorie intake, but what are the actual mechanics?

Do you calorie count?

Do you eat the same thing at the same time every day?

How many meals per day?

What about drinks?

What do you do when you're not at home and your regular food isn't available?

Do you calorie count?

What do you do when you're not at home and your regular food isn't available?

Easy one that.

Do you calorie count?

Yes, religiously & OCD-aly. 1,100 max per day. I know the precise calorie count of every morsel I consume.

Do you eat the same thing at the same time every day?

Yes. EXACTLY the same things EVERY day at EXACTLY the same time. Fortunately, I don't have a cultured palate, & any plain food is fine by me. I could eat the same meal every day of my life & not get bored. I built my day around those meals. The post-meal bowl of fresh fruit is the highlight, it is THE biggest bowl of fruit you ever saw. I layer it, from the bottom, fresh pineapple, then red grapes, then white grapes, then a sliced banana, preceded by a low fat yogy. Ooohhhhh.

How many meals per day?

One.

7pm on the dot - EXACTLY - for the main course, the fruit is at 8pm EXACT. Both take approx 11 minutes to consume.

What about drinks?

My weakness. I began by consuming 3 or 4 lattes per day, but eventually got that down to one per day. I had a lot of headaches at first (dehydration) so I started drinking lots of water.

What do you do when you're not at home and your regular food isn't available?

Don't eat. Typically, if at a poker tourney for next door, it will be an all day job, but almost all casino food is poor quality. So I just go without. Peeps say "thats not healthy" but half the world manage fine without a meal some days.

I've finished now, & am eating all sorts of stuff. And you know what? It's an anti-climax, & I really miss the feel-good & taste-good factor of dieting.

The best thing about dieting is how much better food tastes.

I lost 2 stone in 3 months, & it'll take me 9 months to get those 2 stones back on, then I'll start the whole thing again.

Daft 'innit?

Here's one for you from left field....

How would you define success (as it applies to you personally)?  The reason I ask is that I recently reflected on how much my own definitions of success have changed as I have ambled through life, but also something you said a few pages ago which triggered it Smiley

I have been musing this almost non-stop since you Posted it.

Its hard to explain without getting too philosophical or deep.

Success at my age? Just to find peace, contentment & a smooth ride to the terminus. If I happened to collide with the buffers at full chat, all the better.

Success is being alone, relaxed, & at peace.

When I get home & lock the front door a wave of happiness descends over me. You can't touch this, as Mr Hammer sung.

I have no material desires.

I really love playing a little low cost poker, be it £2, £20 or £200, I'm in my element. I sit there quietly (Online), & watch sadly as the kids gouge each others eyes out. Guess I was those kids once.

I'm not fussed if I cash or not, though if I cash, I get a helluva kick.

For testing & teaching purposes, I had to play three 60p (yup, SIXTY PENCE) DYM's recently, as part of teaching a newbie to play. I won all three without ever seeing a flop, & my student (a quite famous sports Celeb) became a far better player because of it. I was chuffed to bits. I netted about thirty bob......

I wish I could help people understand how some things - poker especially, but not just poker - work. So many souls don't get it.

I wish I could understand a lot of things better myself, there are so many things I can't grasp.

Where does all the anger come from these days? If I could answer some of those questions of myself, that'd be success.

I never forgive those who wilfully waste my time. Either they, or I, don't understand, the egg-timer never stops & we only get one go.

I'd like to settle a few of life's bills, but in a weird way, I'd rather turn the other cheek.

I read a lot of stuff on blonde & it hurts me to see the desire to start aggro for aggros sake. I cannot see what their pleasure is in that, it's like vandalising 'phone boxes or keying cars.

On balance though, blonde is very special, there are so many good people here, & most have grasped how to debate well.

Work? That's a whole other thing. Jim McShane asked that question, & I will answer it shortly. Bit short of time right now, as I'm working tonight. Oh the irony.

So there you are Simon. I could write a book in reply, but that'll have to do for now. In fact I will write a book, but I doubt the world in general will ever see it. Or want to. It will have a very select audience.

If success is happiness, I did good.

Oh, & I wish I knew how to work modern car radios. All those bloody buttons, & the wipers come on, the headlights dip, the mirrors adjust but I'm buggered if I can find TMS.

Having Google to find what TMS is

Press the button that says radio. Look on the DAB bit it will be there unless it has stopped
broadcasting because it's shit!

So how did you decide on 1100 cals, did you eat less when you were doing 3-4 lattes, and when you got down to one, when did you have it?
