Teeks if the bank indeed sees fit to lend me a chunk of cash I may be about to move almost next door to the Elm Grove allotments in Walton-on-Thames.

Would I be right in thinking you have an allotment yourself? Also do you happen to know anything about these specific ones?

Elm Grove Allotments, Walton on Thames? No, sorry, I'm not familiar with them, though I go into Walton almost daily, I love the place.

I have an allotment?

Err, well, umm, no, not technically, no. Well no, not at all really. When I say on Fred, as I often do, that I have to go "tend the allotment", it is a euphemism......

Now I feel SO bad. I assumed nobody believed I meant it literally. Ugh. I am pretty sure nobody else bought that. If they did, I apologise.

Let's change the subject. Did you know that there is a brand new bridge, over the magnificent river, at Walton?

Here you go, this is the before & after.

Incidentally, the black car in the foreground of the second photo is the very same model as my first ever car - a "Sit Up & Beg" Ford Prefect. £45 it cost me.

Ah, it would appear I had been whoosed on the subject. Worse still, Tom appears to have thought I was going for the 'old man allotment jibe' to you....when in fact I was being entirely sincere in my question. Tom - sorry to let you down!

I did not 'know' that re: the bridge, or at least, I am yet to witness it with my own eyes, though I may remember reading something to the effect.

Anyway, if all goes to plan (and I haven't put the mockers on in discussing it), Walton shall become home soon Smiley

No no no, Ed.

Tom was rofling because you thought when I write "I need to go tend the allotment" it was genuine......

Ed - just stop digging. Anyway, I need my shovel back, so I can go & te.........

Emmanuel for you Roll Eyes These modern pop-up institutions...

I thought everyone knew when you said you were going to tend the allotment, you meant you were going to drop the kids off at the pool.

On that photo of the RTL, did anyone spot the advert?

"Boys & Girls Exhibition"?

Jeez, back in the day that was THE highlight of every child's year. It was held at Olympia, or Earls Court, I forget which.

Can't really imagine such a thing now, somehow, even the mere name sounds so trite now. "Boys & Girls", ha!

Boys are deemed grown up now at 10, & girls wear bras & make up at 8.

Having already run into a spot of bother with my lack of comprehension of the phrase "off to tend the allotment", now seems as good a time as any to stick my neck out and say I really like the design of the new Routemaster.

They're designed by Thomas Heatherwick, right? I went to see an exhibition of his (and his studio's) various work that was on at the V&A. I must admit when it comes to large swathes of art I'm something of a philistine (I like my paintings to look like photographs, which apparently is a rather antiquated take on things), yet this exhibition was absolutely fascinating. Obviously he's now most commonly known for the Olympic torch but the varied nature of his projects is quite something.

Wow, found this, The Boys & Girls Exhibition.

No sound I'm afraid, but spot the differences that 50 years or so has occasioned.

Whoa, hold up.

Are we saying that this new fangled Routemaster thing was designed by an artist?

Explains everything.

Designer rather than artist - there's a huge architectural element to his work (I now see that he studied three dimensional design at Manchester Polytechnic and at the Royal College of Art - thanks Wiki).

Busted.

Mr HeatherBloodyWick is a tosspot, official.

He designed "BoftheBang" in Manchester.

Wiki says....

The sculpture was commissioned in 2003; construction overran and the official unveiling was delayed until 12 January 2005. Six days before the launch, the sculpture suffered the first of three visible structural problems as the tip of one of the spikes detached and fell to the ground. Legal action started a year later, resulting in an out-of-court settlement totalling £1.7 million.

In February 2009, Manchester City Council announced that the sculpture would be dismantled and placed in storage, as the "only practical alternative". The council expressed its commitment to working closely with the design team in order to "determine whether there is a robust and affordable strategy for the re-construction of the structure on the site". Despite the promise of storage and potential reassembly, the core and legs of the sculpture were cut apart during removal. The core was sold for scrap in July 2012, while the 180 spikes remain in storage

Let us hope his stupid bus lasts just a little longer. Still, those spikes will come in handy for something one day. Maybe.

This is by an artist called Yves Klein, of whom I visited an exhibition when living in Paris. Utter tosh.

Tikay would file it under "Birds & Waders - Near Misses" at a guess?

Funnily enough they didn't mention the detaching spike and subsequent lawsuit at the V&A...!!

I still don't really get the big kerfuffle about the whole personalised number plates thing

I think people who have them are tossers.

That doesn't actually make them tossers - I am not the final arbiter (although I probably should be!)

I could never get so heated or riled up about another persons views as some people seemed to get about my opinion of personalised number plates.

Never mind Camel, I think you need to have a word with your boy about allotments.

Have you explained the facts of allotments to him yet?

I'll have you know we're quite the country pair, Father & I. Great-Great-Grandfather Gascoigne had some lovely cottages and veg patches down at the bottom of his garden....until he lost them in a cardgame.
