Most golfers that I know always use a pencil for marking cards in competitions.

I always use one with a rubber on the end for obvious reasons and carry a pencil-sharpener in my golf bag.

I am a fan of pencils ... and sharpeners (the joy of being able to use the fixed one on the teachers desk) .... and erasers.  As a child I had an eraser collection, all various shapes, sizes, colours and smells. Yes, they bought out the different smelling variety kind. 

My favourite kind though, for pure rubbing out quality along with no breaky-off bits (very annoying when an eraser crumbles or breaks whilst using it) was this type:



I had a huge love of stationery shops as a child as well, still do. Every Saturday I would wander down to WHSmith just to look at the stationery section, the jigsaws and the books. But always went through the stationery section twice    Even these days, when I have time to kill I will often grab a Costa (in paper cup obv) and wander around Staples or other such shop. Merrily kill half an hour in complete contentment doing that

I had quite forgotten about erasers. In those days we called them "rubbers" of course, then the hackneyed so-called comedians who love whoopee cushions & the like used the double entendre thing, so they became erasers.

I never realised folks still enjoyed stationery shops, though it used to be the thing to do on a Saturday, before the internet arrived.

My shop fad is bookshops, I sometimes go to Charing Cross Road & spend the entire day just perusing & buying books. In 2nd hand bookshops, there is ann evocative musty smell, which is lovely.

How are you, anyway, & your Little Big Man? How old is he now? Into girls yet? You must be as proud as punch of him.

Good to see you Next Door from time to time, too. Weird how we often seem to be on the same table!

I'm doing a sort of Mini-Bankroll challenge thing there, not the usual dick-waving thing, just "Brand Message" sort of thing. I Update progress daily. Only small money, but immensely satisfying. Taken me a month to make £100 profit, lol, but it relaxes me tremendously, I can shut the world off when playing small-ball poker.

Two places very close to my heart when I was a child.


I used those two stations to go to school. North Acton was particularly interesting, as the GWR Main Line up to Birmingham, from Paddington, ran past on parallel tracks, & I well remember my Dad being the driver of the passing steam engine & train, & tooting his engine whistle, & waving, especially for me. I felt so proud.

That was my Dad driving that, & he blew the whistle just for me.  

For once, I felt important. It mattered so much to me. I'd have been about 8 or 9 at the time, right in the middle of my stammering phase.

I travel into North Acton daily - really could do with a revamp - far too small to cope with the rush hour crowds - guess when they built it it wasn't bang in the middle of what is, in effect, a huge industrial estate.

I travel into North Acton daily - really could do with a revamp - far too small to cope with the rush hour crowds - guess when they built it it wasn't bang in the middle of what is, in effect, a huge industrial estate.

The station, along with West Acton, were part of the Central Line extension to Ealing Broadway.  

Landis & Gyr had a huge factory almost adjacent the station, near Gypsy Corner at the junction of the Western Avenue (A40) & Horn Lane, so I guess it would have largely served that.

The foot approach used to be down a lovely smooth , macadamed, downhill path. Must be skateboard hell now.
